I guess cabling is the perfect job for an OCD.

1 Million Downloads of OpenOffice 3.4 and only 2% are Linux!? This is kind of surprising - maybe open office is dead in the Linux community, but it sure is alive and well in MS. by levlin linux

[–]shaurz 0 points1 point ago

Most Linux users get OpenOffice from their distro package manager, and I don't think that would be counted.

And anyway, since Linux is only 1% of the desktop market, that means that it's almost twice as popular with Linux users as it is with Windows users.

Android now controls 59% of the world's smartphone market share; iOS at a distant 23% by mepperin Android

I thought the Atari joystick had a ball too, but apparently my memory fails me. I think I was confusing it with the Amiga Competition Pro joystick. Although you're right the Atari 2600 was before my time (although I have quite a few games for it).

Here's a website for some software I've been working on. It is a genetic algorithm image compression format, which is kinda of fun to watch. by arcticmailmanin compsci

Random mutation and selection is the dumbest possible algorithm. Kind of like bozo sort. It can have impressive results, if you have millions of years to spare.

Interesting CSS trick on that blog, when you make the browser width small enough it shows the mobile version. But there is a bug: the "INTERNET ALCHEMY" title displays as:

INTERNE

T

ALCHEM

Y

in Firefox, depending on the browser width.

Most OSes have character map programs. Sometimes there is a key combination, and the character map will tell you what it is. Or you could just google "trademark symbol" and copy-paste it.

Is there any formal theory dealing with object oriented programming? by zzingin compsci

[–]shaurz 0 points1 point ago

Something like that. To be fair, a lot of things were invented first and understood later. I think only functional programming came after the theory.

Formalisation of object-oriented programming exists, but seems to be retroactive.
