In around 120 years, every person currently alive will be dead, and the earth will be completely populated with people that have not yet been born. What other inevitable facts about the future do you think about? by diddletapflamdiddlein AskReddit

And I am five year out of college and here to tell you that there is no such thing as a real adult. Just kids that have gotten older.

Someone should write a book with this theme and then turn it into a Will Smith movie that has absolutely nothing to do with the book.

[ELI5] Why didn't Google just buy the shit out of Facebook at that IPO? by 1r0n1cin explainlikeimfive

Simply put, Google thinks it can make more money with its money that Facebook can make with Google's money.

College Graduates, Dropouts Now Account For A Majority Of Jobless 25+, First Time Ever - Investors.com by libervorein news

Did you read that first paragraph?

The average 2009 college grad had $24,000 in student loan debt. But in today's debt-wracked world, some have it much worse. Meet one of the outliers: 23 years old, more than $200,000 in student loans, begging for help.

Compare that with your statements:

Average student ends up with 200,000 dollars in debt

and

over all average for student debt is 200k

Do you understand words like averages and outliers?

Care you point to a source for your $200k in debt number. I know the problem is bad, but it isn't true that the "average student ends up with 200,000 dollars in debt".

Dropping out: Is college worth the cost? by york100in TrueReddit

[–]sethist 0 points1 point ago

That might be true, but the question was about the typical college costs. It is unfair to answer that with a "not atypical" private school's cost.

But even if you were earning a paycheck, you still have to eat and pay rent. Those are fixed costs associated with being a self supporting person, not with being a college student. If you are going to include those in your costs, then you need to include health insurance, mobile phones, car payments, alcohol, and anything else that you spend money on that has nothing to due directly with your education.

You numbers are wrong somewhere. If the average per year is $30k, the average dept will not be $200k.

[–]sethist 11 points12 points ago

MIT isn't a "typical US degree". It is well above average in both costs and prestige. Also, people shouldn't include room, board, and food plans into the costs of college, because last time I checked, non-college students still need to eat and have shelter too.

I believe the average is around $25k per year, although there are many state universities that are cheaper, and local community college that are even cheaper than that.

Dropping out: Is college worth the cost? by york100in TrueReddit

[–]sethist 2 points3 points ago

It isn't [worth it],

A degree (even in something as meaningless as communications) is a prerequisite for most "career" path jobs.

Aren't these two views conflicting? The value of a college degree is equal to what it can get you. If you need the degree before starting your career, that degree is worth a whole lot of potentially lost wages.

ELI5: Why do we change the name of countries in the English language? ie: Deustchland - Germany; Nihon/Nippon - Japan; Espana - Spain by bfelixin explainlikeimfive

I think proper nouns have different expectations associated with them, If your name is Bob in the US, you will generally still expected to be called Bob in any foreign country (assuming your name isn't too difficult to pronounce in their language).

TIL Mosquitos are responsible for killing more people than all the wars in history by Lounginlizard95in todayilearned

[–]sethist 4 points5 points ago

This stat has been posted as a TIL a few different times, but I have seen nothing that would lead me to believe it is actually true. The last time it was posted, I did some research on the topic. From my prior post:

A google search yielded a report about malaria, the big killer of mosquito born diseases. It stated the following:

during the 19th century, malaria reached its global limits... exacting its highest ever toll of sickness and death. Well over one-half of the world's population was at significant risk from malaria. Of those directly affected by malaria at least 1 in 10 could expect to die from it.

and

malaria may be reckoned to have been a factor in between 2 and 5% of all deaths across the planet in the 20th century.

If malaria is the biggest killer from mosquitos and at the peak only killed 10% of people affected by it, I don't see how the numbers could add up to half the world's population.

Rethink the post-interview thank you note by petdancein jobs

[–]sethist 0 points1 point ago

There is no real counterpoint to the blog post, because the blog post is written about a general truth. You should write a thank you note as there is really nothing to lose and a decent amount to gain.

I have spent a decent amount of time on this subreddit, check my post history if you wish. Although, I haven't really seen a valid debate for why you shouldn't send a thank you note. Another aspect of this subreddit, seems to be a larger percentage of self promoting posts. Which is probably to be expected due to the topic, but it also give my BS meter more of a hair-trigger. This post tripped that BS meter.

Rethink the post-interview thank you note by petdancein jobs

You’re thanking the interviewer for his time, reminding his of key parts of the interview and your key skills, and reasserting that you are interested in the job.

You still have a typo with pronouns.

Please Don't Become Anything, Especially Not A Programmer by tompa_coderin programming

[–]sethist 3 points4 points ago

Code is how you communicate with information technology.

I disagree. A programmer's whole job is to make interacting with a computer as easy and efficient as possible.. The human computer interface should be simple, clean, and intuitive In fact, it should be as far apart from coding as possible. It is the reason why things like the iPad have taken off, they are the least computery computers around.

[–]sethist 4 points5 points ago

I am surprised this has been upvoted so much, it is seemingly just blog spam. It really doesn't add much to the conversation outside of the common refrain of send thank you/followup notes.

People ask “Do I really have to do that?” and I say “No, you don’t HAVE to, you GET to.” It’s not a chore, it’s an opportunity.

I mean really?

On a possibly misogynistic side note, it always annoys me when men refer to sexless people with female pronouns. It is even worse in this case considering the person being referred to (Mr. Manager) was established as male earlier in the post.

Long article in NY Times business section on student loan debt. My question: why would anyone borrow $120,000 to go to Ohio Northern University? "When I graduate, I'm going to owe $900 a month. No one told me that." by gouge-awayin TrueReddit

[–]sethist 0 points1 point ago

It is not that they "should", it is just the way the real world works. If the parents are abusive, extremely poor, or incompetent it will have a negative effect on a child's life. And while I think society needs to help those children in some way, I don't think that burden falls on banks.

I don't think it is the responsibility of the lenders to make a student aware of the burden a student loan can cause. In my mind, that is the job of the parents to pass that knowledge onto their children. The problem is that the parents are only a couple years removed from having their house foreclosed on and haven't learned that lesson yet themselves.

Why College Football Should Be Banned - WSJ.com by brattlebrixin TrueReddit

[–]sethist -1 points0 points ago

For the record, I don't think football (or art) enhances academic work per se, just that they can be an academic work in their own right.

Now if you want to ban football because of brain injuries, that is another discussion that has a lot more merit than banning it for academic reasons like others have suggested.

[–]sethist 1 point2 points ago

There is certainly an artful aspect to football. Whether it is watching Barry Sanders run 25 yards to gain 5 or the way Bill Belichick will manipulate the opposing team with play calls, there is plenty of art in football. Personally, I prefer watching football to reading poetry, but that doesn't mean I am going to dismiss all poetry as unartistic. I would recommend non-football fans lend the same type of courtesy toward football.

Just curious, have you tried to memorize a football playbook? What about study film on the tendencies of an opposing cornerback? There is a lot more that goes into football than simply hitting players on the other team.

The author is a pretty accomplish sports journalist who wrote Friday Night Lights. I would call him a blowhard and an asshole, but he certainly knows a thing or two about football.
