Liberal gun owners - how do you feel about the NRA? by thelapoubellein guns

[–]seregygolovogo 0 points1 point ago

The people who work at their headquarters ARE the NRA.

They should not be defined by their fundraising efforts. Rather, they should be defined by the actions those efforts fund. Those actions mainly include lobbying for gun rights. They are the most effective second amendment lobby. They are effective by being willing to compromise and accept change incrementally. This is how the legislative process works.

I love them both. ACLU and NRA. Would love to work for either one of them.

McDonald wouldn't have happened if it weren't for them. The SAF folks were trying to push Privileges and Immunities, and SCOTUS just wasn't going to have it.

In other words, the only reason 2A is applicable toward the states is because NRA intervened in the case.

Even if you disagree with that, the only reason that concealed carry is legal in 49 states is because of the NRA's concerted long term effort. Take a look at what it was in the 1980s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rtc.gif

First off, they are not weak. I worked in the Virginia house of delegates, and when the NRA spoke, everyone listened.

Second, I've volunteered at the NRA headquarters in Fairfax, and there's no fucking way they would endorse Massachusetts style gun control. There was much cursing in our office the day that Michelle Bachman announced she supports the second amendment right to hunt.

So, I've volunteered at their corporate headquarters, and gotten to know quite a few of the people there. Your description couldn't be further from the truth.

In fact, most of the people I worked with were not hard-right extremists at all. That perception is a result of their fundraising efforts.

At least half of the people I got to know were fine with the gays getting married and thought that the drug war was a waste of time.

While that chart tells me which privity is necessary for what, I don't think it tells me what the difference is. Does it? Or am I being dense?

I swear, if I can't find a job as a lawyer, and I hang out my own shingle, I'm going to put a sign out front that says, "Will litigate for ammo"

Louisiana Pro-Gun Constitutional Amendment Passes House, Goes to Senate for Possible Final Approval on Tuesday by Narcolepsy83in guns

[–]seregygolovogo 5 points6 points ago

You bet! The United States Supreme Court has not yet decided on a level of scrutiny afforded to the second amendment. These type of amendments only apply toward the state's equivalent to the second amendment.

That being said, the benefit of this amendment is not limited to Louisiana. If enough states get these kind of amendments, and judges don't do anything crazy (like rule that inmates have the right to pistols), the Supreme Court will be more likely to feel comfortable choosing a pro-gun level of national scrutiny.

[–]seregygolovogo 7 points8 points ago

No, no it doesn't. This amendment is not directed toward the legislative branch. It is directed toward the judicial branch.

This has profound legal implications.

This is a legal term, not a loophole. This is the highest level of legal scrutiny. This means that anti-gun laws are least likely to be upheld by the courts under this level of scrutiny.

Thanks. If you want to learn more: here's a quick and dirty version of what law students learn: http://www.worldcat.org/title/criminal-procedure/oclc/86083107&referer=brief_results

You should be able to use worldcat to find that in a library near you. The only things is: that cd set is too old to have the new GPS case on it.

is a limit or is not a limit?

Why would a limit be a good thing or a reason to support it?
