As far as I can tell from >50 years in California: The rivalry is largely a creation of the Bay Area media, and is very much a one-way "rivalry". The bay area is jealous of LA's population and its influence over the whole state's government. And because of the population difference, the bay area essentially doesn't exist to most Angelenos. (I lived in LA for >20 years, and then in/near silicon valley for another >20.)

/etc predated the existence of /var by decades. In the early (like, mid-1970's) "informal" distributions of the Unix kernel sources, the device drivers were in a directory called "dmr", and the rest of the kernel were in one called "ken".

Yup, Potato bugs or Jerusalem crickets. We had them in Pasadena in the 1960's, and in the Santa Cruz Mountains now. Whenever I dig one up, I take it over and toss it into the chicken yard. The chickens go nuts, they love those things!!

SIL40, I've only heard the Armadillidodos called pillbugs or sowbugs, never potato bugs.

I have used a similar zsh function ("zq") for a few years now, but searching only the current dirstack. (ALL of my cd-like commands add to the dirstack.) The guts are something like this:

zq_dest=$( dirs -v | grep "$1" | head -1 )

set -- $=zq_dest

echo z $2

eval z $2

Python is in much more demand than the others that b.r.42 mentioned. Ruby is, too. And Javascript is even more so. Haskell and Scala provide more "differentness" than most.

+1 for the open source project suggestion. Recommendations depend on your interests. If it were me, I'd be looking at LLVM, or at Scala libraries, or one of the fancy Javascript libraries which are almost required to be open source. Or one of the nicer test frameworks, e.g., TestNG or Rspec.

"Working Effectively with Legacy Code" is actually by Michael Feathers. It's a part of a Robert C Martin series, so the Amazon link that's the 1st Google result looks a little misleading.

Wasn't it somewhat like that in the beta programming language ? E.g., an expression assigning the result of a function call looked somewhat like this:

argument -> function pattern -> result
