Reddit, as a classical musician, tell me what we could do better. What is it about classical music that keeps you away from our concerts? by a12345678910in AskReddit

[–]schumann10 0 points1 point ago

It's difficult - on the one hand you have the fact that people go to concerts because they've heard of stuff (hence why Beethoven's symphonies are always performed), but on the other hand people see that and don't find it terribly exciting outside of an educational experience. If there was a performance of a new composer's work that nobody had heard of, would people rush to go see it? Outside of people who already like classical music, I don't believe so. Though the LA Phil is modernizing to some success. For me it was all about having some knowledge behind the music. You listen to Berlioz's requiem, and you're like alright I guess this is cool, but when you can imagine the skies opening up and the brass coming in when the angels descend on earth because you know that's what it's about, you get the chilly willies. In another example outside of more program related music, there is Bach or the late string quartets of Beethoven - these pieces that are so amazingly technical, that you really need to pay attention to where each note is leading and how it bends your expectations every single time. Otherwise you might just hear the baroque cadences that everyone knows over and over again and become bored. Also, I'd friggin love it if some of the absolutely huge performances like Mahler's symphony of a Thousand or Berlioz etc. would be performed with the actual amount of musicians that they wanted. I understand that this would be difficult and costly, but that would really knock even the casual person off their feet if there were a thousand musicians playing at once rather than just the four or five through amps that we're used to.

Haha I liked your stuff, but a two song EP/Single? Two songs is just a single, A/B side, an EP stands for extended play, which in the days of vinyl would not be required for two 3 minute songs. But anyway this is some good schnazz it had my toes tappin'.

I recently did something akin to this via Reddit too, but you guys are way tighter and better recorded. Best of luck to you, it sounds really good!

Yeah, oddly enough my own pic of it from two years ago is almost the same as the OP, but... the hands are flipped, it's definitely a redone Jack and there is a gorilla paw coming in. http://i.imgur.com/IjqrP.jpg Wonder what happened?

This is in Berlin, for anyone wondering. Lots of great graffiti in the area of it, too.

This is a bit late, but I finally got a youtube channel set up and am slowly getting songs up there as someone below had asked where to find one. Maybe someone will see this on this otherwise dead post!

Thanks man. Post a link to Reddit someday I'd love to hear what other Redditors are doing!

If you could download any album free, legally, directly from record companies by sitting through an ad, would you? by soad921in Music

[–]schumann10 0 points1 point ago

Spotify isn't ridiculously different in that it streams rather than downloads with ads, and artists make about a tenth of a penny per stream.

To be fair, those giant labels own tons of the smaller 'indie' labels. The truly independent ones that are doing it right (like say, Merge) really don't deserve this treatment. It would be better to selectively do this, rather than punish people that just happen to be in the same industry and otherwise handle themselves well because of a blanket clause. I completely agree with what you say about publishing, though and licensing. The best way to do this might be to boycott all hugely successful, major label acts. Those are generally the cash cows anyway (the Biebers, etc.) that truly drive those majors. But I don't know how many Bieber fans are on Reddit to begin with?

Yeah I fixed that one WAV file - it should be an MP3 now. Sorry to anyone that was screwed up by that. I'll upload a link to the lyrics tomorrow, I wrote them all on paper so I gotta type em' up.

Just a tidbit of info - Chopin (though this practice had somewhat died out after the time of Bach) was a fan of playing on pianos of different temperament, which would radically change the sound and even the harmonies depending on the key he wrote in. On his piano, transposing would make it sound way different - even more different (as Taurich says) than it does on today's equally tempered pianos!

I wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who donated, to everyone who downloaded, and to everyone who bothered to give it a shot at least. To those of you who really didn't like it and felt it wasted their time, then apologies. If anyone wants to stay in touch with the future projects we are working on, I guess like the Facebook page? That's mega lame but I don't know how else to do it. Either way, thank you for the feedback on things - I have learned a lot here, and am really genuinely surprised that this didn't just get 2 upvotes and three downvotes and nobody heard from it again.

Uhh whoops no I wasn't aware of that, is that a hindrance to people? I'll try to go in and fix that. Thanks for the tipoff.

Hmm I could probably make it available on FLAC or WAV for anyone that wants it. Just shoot me an email and I'll upload them to Soundcloud or something, I don't see how to make it a download option on this site builder thing.

Yes, it took a long time and is nowhere near being a Rick Rubin production, but it was the best I could do.

Haha I heard Mulatu is also on that. One of the few Bill Murray films I've yet to see.

Yeah, I was going to school and working in ye olde university mailroom while recording in a studio / my own apartment for the time being (it was more like 8 months so I condensed it cus of that). Editing it took FOREVER. A few people have mentioned the drums being shitty - yeah, they're shitty, cus I played them and I ain't no drummer. So I'd have to go in and edit all my little mistakes around to make it sound like some semblance of something. Also there were four or five songs recorded that didn't make it onto here cus they just weren't very good lolz. Little note - someone stole the studios drum sticks the day I recorded "Occupy Oscar" so I played them with a toy dinosaur and a Bic pen. Didn't help me keep time any better.

Yessss in particular the song "Tezeta". Could be the soundtrack to a silent film Eastern European version of Casper.

I was considering that one too, actually, but I was afraid it was too long.
