Calling kamado grill masters, how do i keep my temperature low? by TheWorldEndsTonightin BBQ

[–]schrack3000 1 point2 points ago

Here's what I do to keep a low temp using Kingsford briquettes. Rather than lighting them all at the beginning, I put them in unlit and spread them out on the bottom in a single briquette high layer (as in don't have them stacked on top of each other). Then in my chimney starter I light about 12-15 briquettes. If you use a chimney starter you'll want to make a pyramid with them up against the wall of the chimney. They'll start better that way. Then when they are lit I dump them on top of the unlit ones, right in the middle. I also put 3-4 wood chunks I'm smoking with on top of the unlit ones at this time. This method works well because the few lit briquettes in the middle slowly get the briquettes under them lit, which then spread out lighting the rest over time. I would try this, along with your method of putting a pizza stone in for indirect cooking. When I use this method in my smoker I'm able to keep a 200 to 225 degree temp for quite a few hours.

Just an FYI for everyone, the ice is always under the floor. Not just today because of the kings game. It's always there. Not saying people aren't slipping a lot. Clearly they are. And maybe it's because they changed the bball court after the clippers game.

I'm with you 100%. I wasn't sure about the new car when I saw pictures of it before the season. I thought it looked a little weird. But once I saw it on the track I realized I was wrong. And even more important than the look...it's given us some great races. The road races in recent years had become almost follow the leader parades with little passing. That's not the case with the new car. It's been the best indy car racing in years in my opinion. Really interested to see how the racing is on ovals. I think we're gonna be in for a real treat.

A weight on the mirror. Sheesh. Couldn't have weighed much at all. Hopefully he can still get in the top 9 for the pole run later today.

I said it on here during the first race of the year... The new car is just gorgeous. But it looks even better going around the IMS. I cannot wait to see how they look barrelling towards the green flag in those glorious 11 rows of 3 next Sunday. Gonna be awesome.

Rest up Lakers! Game 1 in OKC on Monday. by joeintheboxin lakers

[–]schrack3000 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I agree with you. Seems to me like we're playing a much better version of the team that just took us to 7 games. The fan in me wants to think we will steal one of the first 2 games in OKC and then just hold serve at home and win in 6. But if you put a gun to my head and said I had to bet all my possessions, all my money, etc. on one team and the number of games....I'd go with OKC in 5. Obviously I really, really hope I am wrong and I would love to edit this comment in a couple weeks with something like "Edit: I'm dumb". But I can't shake those 3 regular season games from my mind. They won 2 of them easily. The one we won was at home, MWP knocked Harden out of the game in the first half, and we still needed a miracle comeback with Kobe hitting ridiculous shot after ridiculous shot to get the game into OT.

Before the playoffs I told myself "well they won't run on us like the regular season. In the playoffs the games slow down and it becomes mostly about half court, and I'll take our half court offense over OKCs any day." And then I watched Denver get one fast break dunk after another. So, yeah, I'm concerned.

Can't say I'm a big fan of games 3 and 4 on consecutive days when we're playing a younger, more athletic team.

Positive spin: Ron Artest will get to play game 7 and shake off some rust before the OKC series.

Negative spin: Ron Artest is going to be rusty in game 7 and could make it even harder to win the game.

The Knicks upset the Heat. Do they have any chance at all to reach the Finals? by melotopiain nba

[–]schrack3000 5 points6 points ago

Well if you're going to use a 2-1 season series as proof that you can absolutely beat the pacers, then you also have to conclude you absolutely can't beat Miami because the Knicks went 0-3 against Miami this regular season.

Microbrews? Local clubs or circles for homebrews? by spaz1904in fresno

[–]schrack3000 4 points5 points ago

I'll second full circle. They make some great beers. Definitely shady part of town (though I've never had any problems and I've been numerous times) but a really cool atmosphere inside and they also often have live music and such on the weekends. And if you don't want to hang out they sell growlers so you can take it to go. If you're worried about the shady part of town just go during the day and get some to take home. I believe each growler holds 5 beers.

You should also check out Sequoia Brewing. They have a restaurant in Tower and another in North Fresno. They brew their own beer and have really good food as well.

Yeah I think they designed that site in 1998. Maybe the money they save on web design is the reason they can offer free shipping.

I miss this man. by mbyluoin lakers

[–]schrack3000 10 points11 points ago

Yep, that's the one. I was in college at the time. Watching the game with my brother (fellow laker fan) and my girlfriend at the time. She was from Chico and was a huge Kings fan. When Horry hit the shot my brother and I ran around the house screaming then did the ol bro hug while jumping up and down right in front of her. I didn't get laid for 2 weeks after that.

Totally worth it.

HA! I'm kind of immature myself.

Hickory is my favorite. Love cherry and pecan as well. Really just depends what you're cooking.

Never really looked online before. I tend to get most of my wood at a meat market in my town. You might want to check out Lowe's or Home Depot. They usually have good prices on briquettes, lump charcoal, and they have wood chunks as well. They almost always have 2 packs of 20lb briquettes (per bag) for around $18. And be on the lookout, because every so often they will sell them 50% off. Usually around big time BBQ events. Memorial Day is coming up, and the 4th of July as well, so look at their ads and stock up. Last time they did it I bought 200lbs worth. Probably going to at least double that next time. It's worth it.

[–]schrack3000 1 point2 points ago

Nicely done. I had a similar thing happen here several months back. One of the Save Marts was closing and everything was on sale. The chunks were 75% off, so I bought every bag they had left. Mesquite and hickory. Around a dozen or so bags. That was a great day. :)

Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard says he won't play for Stan Van Gundy by robert32907in nba

[–]schrack3000 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. He tries to be manipulative, he's just awful at it. I think a year ago nba fans in general liked Howard. Now, in his quest to be liked by everyone, he's managed to turn nba fans in general against him and even a portion of his own fan base. Well played...

Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard says he won't play for Stan Van Gundy by robert32907in nba

[–]schrack3000 8 points9 points ago

The narrative on D-Howard from all the NBA analysts seems to be that he wants everyone to like him. Considering that, I found it really funny when he was asking to be traded, but then being wishy washy in an attempt to somehow make Orlando fans still like him. It reminded me of when someone asks for relationship advice like this: How do I tell my SO of 2 years who is madly in love with me that I don't want to be with them anymore because I want to start hooking up with and dating other people.....how do I do that without hurting their feelings? Which always cracks me up because it's basically asking 'how can I hurt someone's feelings without hurting their feelings?'. Which of course you can't. Dwight seems to be so immature that he seems to think there's some way to not make people mad at him all while doing things that make people mad at him.

Why does the Fresno Bee report "news" like this: by [deleted]in fresno

[–]schrack3000 0 points1 point ago

Well there's several reasons really. To begin with, the newspaper industry in general is dying. If a newspaper is someone's main source of news in this day and age, that person is in the minority. Most people get their news from TV and the internet.

Newspapers 3 main sources of revenue are advertisements, the classifieds, and subscriptions. The internet giving us the ability to get the news instantly, rather than having to wait for the paper to arrive in the morning has greatly hurt subscriptions. Craigslist (and the like) has nearly killed the classifieds. Think about it. Why would you pay to put an ad in the classifieds when you can list it on craigslist for free, and more people will see it there. It's a win-win. So the newspapers are losing money from subscriptions and classifieds. And that leads to another loss of revenue: advertisements. Businesses are advertising less and less in the newspaper because they don't get nearly as much bang for their buck. Companies have a limited budget for advertising. Why put that money into newspaper ads when they can put ads in other mediums that far more people will see.

I had 2 friends who worked for the Bee up until a few years ago. One was an IT guy. He saw the writing on the wall, got a better job in Santa Barbara and left. He said when he left, they were in such bad financial shape that in order to save costs on paper, they had decreased the width of the newspaper to the smallest the printing presses would allow for. My other friend was a graphic designer and got laid off. When he started the Bee had something like 15 people in his department. When he was let go they were down to 3 I believe.

What does all this have to do with the stories they report? Well, the stories need to be cheap. You want more in-depth reporting, more investigative journalism. I'm with you, that'd be nice. But that involves having journalists work for days, weeks, even months, on a single story. All the while they have to pay the journalist their salary while not getting any stories in the paper from that journalist during that time. They simply don't have the money to do that. They are down to a bare bones staff that is the minimum necessary to put out a daily paper. They simply don't have the money to give to other journalists to do that in-depth reporting.
