You're right, it is terrible. Maybe working in fundraising has detuned my moral compass. Anyway, no one is actually doing what I'm suggesting, but many people DO steal signs and bumper stickers, thinking they're hurting the other side. It's all silly behaviour, and I don't condone it.

I work in fundraising for politics, and I've heard multiple stories of signs being stolen from people's yards. The ironic thing is, when the supporter re-orders the signs, the money supports the campaign. For Obama's campaign, that's $15. If you think about it, there's no better way to get people to donate.

If you're smart, steal the signs you agree with. You can re-plant them somewhere else, but now you've likely gotten someone else to donate to your favorite candidate.

IWTL How to tell the key of music? by EwingMcGregorin IWantToLearn

[–]saxmaster 10 points11 points ago

You should learn your major (and minor) scales in all keys if you haven't yet. Then, when you can play or sing a correct scale over the music and all the notes sound harmonious, you've identified the key. The key you're in is the root of the major or minor scale.

In major keys, the root is "do" in do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do" *or "C" in C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C

In minor keys, the root sounds like "la" in "la-ti-do-re-mi-fa-so-la" *or "A" in A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A

The problem with trying to identify a key without using a scale is that to the untrained ear, intervals like 5th or 4th can be mistaken for the root. Also, you'll miss important information, like whether the song is minor or major.

Most popular music is in a few common keys. You can cheat and find those out, but I won't help you. Good luck!

Thinking Of Getting A Keilwerth Shadow. Anyone Had Any Experience With Them?? by itsmiiin Saxophonics

[–]saxmaster 0 points1 point ago

I have the SX90r alto and the Shadow tenor. I can't say I have a single complaint about these horns, after 4 years of music school and many professional gigs. The sound is big, so you have to control it with your embouchure (Selmers and Yamahas feel like your tone is on training wheels compared to this... you feel a bit exposed, but it's worth mastering). I had a little trouble getting that even classical tone, as the horn just likes to wail, so jazz and rock are ideal.

I have large hands, so the extendible palm keys are a great feature. Also, the G# never sticks thanks to the extra lifter mechanism. Middle and low D are sharp like most horns, but otherwise intonation is stellar. You have to work out your altissimo -- it's different than selmer and yamaha, but works fine and is in tune once you find the right fingerings.

BTW, I'm playing an opened up Otto Link (7* or 8) for maximum volume and a thick, dark tone. For classical I've used Selmer C*s, but I highly recommend trying Vandoren AL3 to balance the openness of the sound.

Oh, and they're just sexy looking instruments... let's face it, you're probably not going to tell the difference in sound between an SX-90r and a Shadow, but when you polish those silver keys, your audience will notice.

Hypothesis: Liberals are afraid of a Ron Paul GOP nomination because he's the only one that could seriously present a challenge to Obama at the national level. by optionsanarchistin Libertarian

[–]saxmaster 4 points5 points ago

I was on Digg in 07-08, and I remember an onslaught of anti-Paul rhetoric, very similar to today's. Rather than argue against his policies, they just complain about his popularity on the front page, as if other more serious issues or candidates deserve our attention. They act as though Paul's policies and ideas have been long discredited without offering evidence or argument against them.

Given time, it makes sense that somebody could figure out how to manipulate people on the internet. It would certainly be a valuable skill these days, but would necessarily have to be kept secret.

In Ender's Game the two older siblings manipulate world opinion by creating believable personae in popular message boards. Though anonymous, they become prominent figures in the on-line community and are able to influence world opinion. It's amazing that in 1985 Orson Scott Card predicted tablet computers, the internet, on-line communities like Reddit, and the obvious next step: people who would try to deceive such communities for personal gain.

Summer is coming. YSK how to quickly cool your car after being in the sun by s3rvantin YouShouldKnow

[–]saxmaster 0 points1 point ago

Just leave the driver's door open for a few seconds while lowering the passenger window. Honestly, I'm not convinced that fanning with the door helps much. Hot air has a tendency to buoy out of the car if you give it a nice, fat escape route and an entrance for cooler air.

I want to try mediation to deal with my anxiety, but I wonder about the breathing.... by ab26in Meditation

[–]saxmaster 2 points3 points ago

Try about 2 minutes of large, full breaths, then switch to a more natural, relaxed breath. After 4 or 5 full inhalations and exhalations (while consciously letting go of tension in the belly, chest, and throat), you've gotten rid of a great deal of physical resistance -- and you can get focused on something, whether it's you're natural breathing, a sound in the room, or the silence between your thoughts.

SD card reader that would merge all cards into one disk. by dominikKin Doesthisexist

[–]saxmaster 0 points1 point ago

I know so little about this, but it would seem that if the computer acted as though all the cards were one disk, and you used it for long enough, the system would be super fragmented and you could never remove/replace cards without disturbing lots of files.
