Playing a wedding and a bar gig* down at the shore this weekend. I'm taking a half day tomorrow so I can enjoy the drive/hopefully not sit in traffic as much!

Most definitely Cannonball Adderley.

Rackage [xpost from r/homeautomation] by rad_thundercatin cableporn

[–]saxmaniac1987 0 points1 point ago

Fun fact: Pretty much this entire setup is (most likely) controlled by the Crestron unit towards the top of the second rack with the vertical red LEDs.

Also, this is hella, hella expensive.

That was a cool clip. Thanks for sharing! I've done ADR for a couple friends who were working on projects for audio engineering internships and it was a lot of fun.

What showering as a couple is actually like. by wonderless2686in funny

My girlfriend and I once stayed at a place with a steam shower. This solves the main problem (standing out of the water and freezing) quite well.

Saxophone Stands - which one do I get? by funk_kingin Saxophonics

I have the Hercules double sax stand and while I like how it functions as a stand, when it's folded up it's a really awkward shape that I have a hard time finding a spot for...

Coming from an on-site staffing background, the newer systems don't really give you much room to jury-rig a solution if a component fails. You're stuck saying to the client "welp, equipment's broken. Integrator won't be here until tomorrow." whereas before you could come up with a temporary fix for almost anything with a tweeker and BNC barrels...

Yeah I was up at the experience center wayyyy up in north Jersey a few months ago and they were pushing this stuff pretty hard. We also saw them bench testing their 64x64, too. The tradeoff is that when something goes wrong, it takes down the whole thing. Crestron stuff just doesn't seem as bulletproof.

Check this out. This is in the auditorium control room of a research facility for a well-known pharmaceutical company. The tall rack on the left has all RGB over Cat5 receivers, scalers, and scan converters. All the input sources (and if you count the possibilities it probably pushes 40 possible sources--not everything is visible) are converted to RGBHV (5-wire) and switched over at the tall rack on the right, which is an Extron Crosspoint 450+ 64x64. From there, four main outputs are sent to a Crestron DVPHD which acts as a seamless switcher for output to the projector in the room, and then there are ton of extra feeds to send to various locations on campus over cat5 and fiber. The bottom screen in the middle rack is a touchpanel for the 'user-friendly' patching, but there were times we had to just do it on the matrix for more flexibility.

It's done all. the. time. in corporate a/v environments. Your need scalers, matrices, and other good stuff, but it can certainly be done. Most definitely prohibitively expensive, but possible. I'm an a/v tech who worked in an auditorium with DVD players, satellite receivers, computers, blu-ray players, and a whole bunch of other sources all running through a 64x64 matrix.

That is not enough beer. by porter_esqin pics

[–]saxmaniac1987 4 points5 points ago

My girlfriend was a musician for Royal Caribbean a couple years ago during one of these cruises. She sent me a message one morning:

"People on this charter...oh my God... I've cleaned up so many beer bottles. The bartenders are frustrated because these people aren't tipping. I was just talking to [name] and he told me that he got about 10 phone calls tonight about drunk/sick people. Someone puked in one of the pools. A girl was passed out in [name of restaurant]. They took a guy away in a wheelchair from the promenade after the beer tasting (aka two hours of drink whatever the hell you want). More food has been consumed in 12 hours than what is usually consumed in two days. Noise complaints everywhere. The elevators and the entire pool deck absolutely reek of beer."

Sounds fun!

Being in a wedding band, I hear pretty much the whole gamut of best man toasts. This is definitely great (but you already knew that, obviously). I applaud that it's funny, tasteful, to-the-point, and heartfelt. Bravo.

[Repost from /r/drums] Can Anyone Recommend an Inexpensive Audio Interface with Midi Input for Recording E-Drums? by Doodeyfoodlein audioengineering

[–]saxmaniac1987 0 points1 point ago

The MIDI to USB is most likely not your bottleneck. Midi is a pretty uncomplicated data stream--literally just a set of instructions. I would say that you're seeing your latency somewhere else in the chain. What's your setup? What program are you using to host the plugin?

A work in progress, and why I chose my user name by Ziptyzein cableporn

[–]saxmaniac1987 3 points4 points ago

HOWEVER, I'm pretty sure speaker level and line level lines shouldn't be bundled together, as shown in the diagram here. The relevant section of the book says:

"Signal separation is the process of grouping equipment within a rack according to its function in order to reduce crosstalk among cables resulting from electromagnetic interference (EMI), as shown in Figure 12-17. For example, a rack will include cables carrying low-voltage microphone-level signals (such as 0.001 volt) and cables carrying loudspeaker level signals (such as 30 volts). Providing signal separation by maintaining physical separation of the cables carrying different levels of signal can help to maintain the integrity of the signals."

PreSonus StudioLive 16.0.2 Questions ??? by gmmasterin audioengineering

[–]saxmaniac1987 1 point2 points ago

Correct. You can adjust the fader level in the control program for the board, and then match the board up with that, but that's independent of Pro Tools. Essentially, you need to think of the board as a giant audio interface, rather than a control surface.

PreSonus StudioLive 16.0.2 Questions ??? by gmmasterin audioengineering

[–]saxmaniac1987 1 point2 points ago

  1. Depends which box. From Pro Tools, I don't think so. From Universal Control (which is the interface program to your computer) you can change fader levels, but like jmlee337 said, it won't physically move the fader.

  2. Yes, you can. For whatever channel you want to use the Pro Tools plugins on, you'd hit the Firewire Return button. In Pro Tools, you'd set the I/O so that the channel input and output are both the same channel on the board. So let's use a microphone plugged into channel five as an example. The signal will go from the preamp in the board on channel five--> Input 5 in Pro Tools --> plugins --> Output 5 from Pro Tools --> back to the board. There's no hard bypass, but you can turn all EQ/Comps/Gates off individually. You will have a slight latency, though.

[NBD] I beat the FedEx guy to my house yesterday afternoon! by saxmaniac1987in Bass

[–]saxmaniac1987[S] 1 point2 points ago

I'll see what I can do for you tonight. Yes it's the ebanol fretboard. I bought the bass used with tapewounds on them and was sold on the sound right away, BUT when I was going through the process trying to find the Warwick, I played the same fretless in-store, with flatwounds on it, and I was really unimpressed with the sound. There was pretty much no growl at all. So I'd say the tapewounds bring out MORE of that if anything. Stay tuned and I'll come up with something to demo with.

[–]saxmaniac1987[S] 2 points3 points ago

It's a new Warwick Rockbass Corvette (passive). I tried probably 20-25 different basses last week and fell in love with the feel and the sound, so I ordered one! The amp is a GK Backline 115. Also in the stable: A Squier VM Fretless Jazz (just restrung with La Bella Tapewounds on Saturday) and a shitty Yamaha starter p-bass with a neck that's bowed enough to shoot arrows with...

As far as the FedEx part of the story, a signature was required and nobody was home during the day yesterday, so I was very anxious to make it home and not miss the delivery.
