Some upgrade advice for a novice? by VS_portalin Ubuntu

[–]sanguinoso 1 point2 points ago

This is a quick reply since I'm on my phone. A new install is generally more stable than the upgrade. If you haven't already, look into putting your /home directory into a separate partition. This will allow you to upgrade (or even change distrobutions) without losing files and settings. Oh and you should have backups anyway right? ;)

Kim Dotcom booked a valuable victory this week when a court ruled that $750,000 in funds and cars should be returned to the Megaupload founder. by davidreiss666in technology

"This is about a legal fight over someone who was intentionally profiting off of piracy." Alledgedly. That's the main issue with this. They shut down a website which has not been proven in court to be against the law. How you feel about Dotcom or Megaupload is irrelevant.

I mean it absolutely was goaltender interference. There were a few calls that went against the Bruins that gave the Capitals goals. Would the Bruins have won necessarily if they had been called? No, of course not. However, wouldn't it be better for the game if instead of that questionable goal the Capitals scored a legitimate one? The NHL has some serious problems with its officiating that they will have to address before it becomes like the NBA. All that said, the Bruins didn't play their best hockey in this series but it would be better for the sport if the referees were consistent in their calls no matter if its overtime or the first period.

Is it an unpopular opinion that I think Julien is a mediocre coach at best? That power play at the end of the game was a disgrace to hockey.

And let us all hope that the referees put their whistles away let them play.

Yeah I don't read the manuals in their entirety either. However, I always assume I fucked something up and read the manual/documentation before blaming someone else.

My update setting is just to notify me that updates are available

Is that a setting you changed from the default? I don't use any of the non-enterprise versions of Windows so I honestly don't know.

By installing your own OS you're already more advanced than most users. I haven't purchased a computer with Windows on it in quite some time so this is a serious question: does the OEM install ask you for your update choice? Also, this may just be semantics as we can probably agree that the average user would probably just check whatever is "recommended" by Microsoft which is most likely fully automatic.

To be fair to this chap, I believe its a common prank for hockey players to loosen the caps to get their teammates wet.

The point is that by default Linux doesn't force you to restart in some arbitrary amount of time. You may restart when you choose to.

Subban should get 10 games. 5 for an illegal hit to the head, and 5 more for a disgraceful turtle. by jpadams87in BostonBruins

[–]sanguinoso 1 point2 points ago

If he doesn't get suspended from this it will be a disgrace. He takes a cheap shot on Krecji and somehow the Canadiens end up with a PP? Isn't that an invitation for other teams to pull this shit on Boston? They know someone on the Bruins will fight after a cheap shot and then they can just turtle and get the PP.

I agree with you. He seems like the type of player who would be locker room poison. I don't think anyone in the NHL likes PK Subban. Not even his teammates

It was bad. All the way around. A penalty shot for lifting the stick? Goalie interference for being pushed into the goalie and then jumped on? Terrible.

Here's another look at that Marchand "hip" check by neosapienin hockey

[–]sanguinoso 0 points1 point ago

Except that according to the rules it wasn't clipping. Marchand didn't hit at the knee or below. Therefore its not clipping.

Marchand to face hearing Monday by hahkein hockey

[–]sanguinoso 0 points1 point ago

44.1 Clipping - Clipping is the act of throwing the body, from any direction, across or below the knees of an opponent. A player may not deliver a check in a “clipping” manner, nor lower his own body position to deliver a check on or below an opponent’s knees. An illegal “low hit” is a check that is delivered by a player or goalkeeper who may or may not have both skates on the ice, with his sole intent to check the opponent in the area of his knees. A player may not lower his body position to deliver a check to an opponent’s knees.

The penalty for clipping says nothing about "putting on the brakes" or "leaning away". Ballard struck the other player at the knees which is clipping. Marchand did not strike the knees or below so it is therefore not clipping. I'm not saying Marchand's hit was definitely legal but what rule did he break? (If any).

The rules are more like guidelines.

This is the first thing you've said that actually answers the question. If referees are not required to strictly adhere to the rule book then Marchand's hit could be ruled clipping because it is almost clipping.

You're right! One is clipping, and that is Ballard's hit. He clearly strikes the other player across the knees making it clipping. Marchand however, does not strike the knee of Salo and therefore it is not clipping. I'm not saying Marchand's was definitely legal, I just want to see the actual rule he broke. I think both hits should be illegal (fyi).

[–]sanguinoso 0 points1 point ago

First of all that's an ad hominem. Second of all neither player in the Ballard play plays the puck so how is the context "very, very different." Just because Salo got hurt? All I see is Ballard ducking a hit and striking someone at knee level. If he got hurt would that warrant a suspension as well? I personally don't like any hits below the waist (I am rather large and got plenty of hip checks, ducks and leg checks in my day) and I think the rule should be modify to eliminate both plays altogether. I just think its hypocritical that you can't see that both hits are extremely similar, with the one difference being I can't actually find a rule that Marchand broke.

Marchand to face hearing Monday by hahkein hockey

[–]sanguinoso 1 point2 points ago

Ah, but like I said before, what rule? Just because Salo got hurt doesn't automatically make it against the rules. The contact was not at knee level therefore its not clipping. I am not saying that it wasn't for sure against the rules but I am looking for a specific rule not "it was dirty" or he "broke the rules".

Is this a charge? (Sharks vs Capitals; Jan 7, 2012) by Harris_Ferrisin hockey

I might be alone on this one but it does look like he leaves his feet which would make it a valid charging call.

Should give a suspension for this hit too then. An injury could have happened just as easily. And this one was actually clipping!
