What can I brew with confectioners sugar. by L0stm4nin Homebrewing

[–]salnajjar 2 points3 points ago

If you want to use it to brew with to add gravity etc then invert it into a candi sugar.

Take 5 pounds of the sugar. Add about 5 cups of water (just to cover it a little) Add 1 teaspoon of citric acid (lemon juice is fine) Bring to a simmer. Hold at a gentle simmer for about 20 minutes.

This breaks down the sucrose into glucose and fructose which the yeast can more easily digest.

I took a trip to the local Jobcentre today. by Owa1nin unitedkingdom

[–]salnajjar 2 points3 points ago

Jobcentre is absolutely terrible, luckily I've not had to deal with them since I was about 17. If you want work then sign on with an agency for temp work. It will pretty much all be general labour and at best semi-skilled, but it's paying work and it can lead to other things. It will give you some cash coming in while you work out how to get to where you actually want to be.

America's "Throwaway People": What Kind of Country Imprisons an Abused 14-Year-Old Girl for Life? by dustygoldin politics

[–]salnajjar 1 point2 points ago*

Yes, at the age of 14 you are capable of understanding the consequences of your actions and the rough potential damage that setting a building on fire can cause, but:

  • Her lawyer did not challenge the decision that she was competent to stand trial after two other psychiatrists had deemed her unfit to do so.
  • Nor did he challenge the prosecutor’s push to try Trina as an adult.
  • She took the stand as the sole witness for the defense.

I've left off the part about the lawyer later being disbarred as there's no context around whether that's in any way relevant.

Do you think that a normal 14 year old child would make a very good defendant in an juvenile case, let alone an adult case?
How about when that 14 year old child had been classified as being "slow"?
And if they're also diagnosed as being schizophrencic?
Lastly, when they have no adult family members who are able to give them any support, guidance or assistance?

Does a GSM/GPRS modem use the same AT commands as a standard dial/fax modem? by jambi1987in arduino

[–]salnajjar 2 points3 points ago

There are some additional AT commands which vary depending on the hardware provider, and you quite often have to enter a specific AT command to enable GPRS data, but in short, yes.

[linux] What performance tests for testing bcache? by salnajjarin sysadmin

[–]salnajjar[S] 0 points1 point ago*

I've just been researching the MySQL side and it looks like Percona only supports "Flashcache", but, I will try and generate some MySQL benchmarks.

I'll also do the same for Apache, but, without bringing up a cache/proxy in the front end it will only be for static pages and not dynamic PHP.

As for NFS, I'll be using some Samba shares instead.

Anyone here tried Bcache? Using SSD's as a cache for HDD's by qandyin sysadmin

[–]salnajjar 2 points3 points ago

The website hasn't been kept up to date (last update 2012-05-07 and the one before that was 2010-10-08), however, the mailing list shows it's still active:

Anyone here tried Bcache? Using SSD's as a cache for HDD's by qandyin sysadmin

[–]salnajjar 1 point2 points ago

I made my patch against a clean kernel.org download of 3.2 to match the bcache git tree and tested it with a vanilla kernel.org 3.3.0 and 3.3.4 download so it should be good to use.

XBMC Eden Skins by bmcclure937in xbmc

[–]salnajjar 1 point2 points ago

For me I've never had any problems and it's kept all my settings, databases etc.

If you're at all worried then backup your "userdata" folder in the XBMC profile.

[–]salnajjar 0 points1 point ago

I couldn't find a patch for the kernel, only the bcache git repo with the whole kernel tree, so I've made a patch and tested it against the gentoo 3.3.4 kernel.

If anyone wants it you can get it here:

Yup, just waiting for a time tonight when I can shut down all services using the MD raid device and perform some extensive before benchmarks.
I'll also be performing some real world tests.
I'll post back in /r/sysadmin with my results.

XBMC Eden Skins by bmcclure937in xbmc

[–]salnajjar 1 point2 points ago

Okay, first things, you need a custom XBMC build. As you mention Windows Media Center then I'm assuming you run XBMC on windows, in which case, grab on of the builds from here:
http://xbmc.opdenkamp.eu/

Next, XBMC doesn't function as the PVR itself, it merely provides a frontend to a PVR backend.

For windows I think you choice of backend are "MediaPortal" or "ForTheRecord", you can look here for more information:
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW-TO:Watch_TV_in_XBMC

Lastly, in MQ3 go into the skin options and choose that you have a PVR enabled build of XBMC and then go into the XBMC addons and choose a frontend client for whichever backend you've installed and configured.

I hadn't heard of this project, I may stick an SSD in my home server and see how it gets on with a 10Tb MD raid array.

  • take iron out of box
  • put iron back in bag
  • walk down Oxford street "idly" swinging the bag, make sure it connects with the leg or groin of everyone who stands still blocking pavements....
