TIL drowning "doesn't look like drowning" and which signs really suggest that someone is drowning by meltshakein todayilearned

[–]sacpopblues 4 points5 points ago

Two of my friends are Seals. Nicest guys in the world. And from what they say, most of the other Seals are nice as fuck too. Apparently Seals deal with so much stress that day-to-day life is a piece of cake which they never take for granted.

Reddit, I'm participating in a charity 'Jailbreak' event. The aim is to hitchhike as far away from my university as possible in 72 hours. Does anyone have any effective hitchhiking strategies? by DesperadosOclockin travel

[–]sacpopblues 4 points5 points ago

I've hitchhiked all over the US. There are a few things you can do to help your odds of getting a ride.

Smile, and make eye contact. Take your shades off so they can see your eyes. Place your backpack about 10 yards behind you; the driver will see you, assess you, and having the backpack further up the road will tell him that he hasn't driven too far yet to pull over and offer a ride. I think it sort of increases your hitchhiking "range", if you will.

Avoid cities, unless you know you can get to the furthest stop in the direction you're going. For example, if you're heading north, get to the northernmost exit of the town/city. Those drivers are more likely to give you longer rides.

I've also tried lots of different signs, but the one that worked best for me simply said "Please?". Give that a try, and good luck!

EDIT: missed a contraction. damn you reddit, I can't help but correct it!

You might consider getting a temporary membership to 24-hour fitness. They have showers, pools and jacuzzis...could really improve your comfort level on this trip. Otherwise, a handful of those alcohol wipes found in some gas stations actually works pretty well! But yeah, I've found that being able to shower and keep clean is a serious morale booster.

Filled donut holes w/ ketchup for april fool's last year. Tricked my friend's aunt into eating them while she was stoned; told her they were strawberry. Ate the whole bag. She didn't even notice.

I'm going on a hitchhiking/backpacking tour through the lower 48 in a couple of months with my best friend. We're taking an HD video camera, a go pro hero, macbook, kindle, and he's got an iphone. We'll be pretty damn connected, and'll be updating a video blog as we go.

I love nature and simplicity as much as anyone, and have done my share of UL backpacking, but I also love technology and don't give a damn about carrying a shit ton of weight. My kelty red cloud 90 can handle it, anyhoo =)

Best places to surf in California? by Fiercekillerin surfing

[–]sacpopblues 0 points1 point ago

I live in venice beach and bike to work in torrance with my surfboard every morning. i'll just pull over and paddle out at the best spot, which usually happens to be el porto, but there's a spot by LAX that goes off on NW swells that i don't know the name of that's pretty cool. every couple of minutes or so, a plane will take off overhead. makes waiting for sets kinda fun!

thanks for the kind words.

goodness, triplets with autism? i'm curious; were they on diff't parts of the spectrum, or roughly even?

also, last year, i noticed a student of mine (low- to mid-functioning) was looking up autism on wikipedia. we had an exchange that went something like this:

"Alvin, I'm autistic. What are you?"

"I guess I'm called 'typical'."

"Do you like it?"

"Being typical? Sure, I think so. How about you? Do you think you'd rather be typical, or autistic?"

"Autistic!"

"Oh yeah?? Why's that?"

"Because it's fun and I'm different!"

=)

I work with children who have autism. One day, one of my students - let's call him "Jordan" - had what we call a "meltdown" (in this case, he became self-injurious due to transitioning from a preferred to a non-preferred activity). Jordan is rather low functioning and doesn't talk much, other than scripting Michael Jackson songs and the imitating the sounds of household appliances, but that day while I was helping him return to "baseline", he looked up at me with lucid, knowing eyes and asked me, "Alvin? I'm sick. Why am I sick? Why does it always hurt, Alvin? Mom hates me. She hates me because I'm sick, Alvin. I hate me. Please help. Please? Help me Alvin."

I was shocked. I'd been working with Jordan for months, and had never heard him speak so clearly about his feelings. I held him in my arms and assured him that he was going to be okay, promised him that things will get easier. Worked with him for a few more months and never heard him say anything like it again. Loved that kid. He could get DOWN to Michael Jackson.
