Researchers at UCSF conclude that sugar is a toxin that should be regulated like tobacco and alcohol by rudhdoggin science

[–]rudhdogg[S] 1 point2 points ago

The article: Lustig, Robert H., Schmidt, Laura A., Brindis, Claire D. "Public health: The toxic truth about sugar". Nature. Vol. 482, Is. 7383. 2012/02/02

Here's the informational release directly  from the school

This is a quote from Dr. Laura Schmidt, one of the co-authors of the paper:

“There are good calories and bad calories...but sugar is toxic beyond its calories.”

And she goes on to say:

“We’re not talking prohibition. We’re not advocating a major imposition of the government into people’s lives. We’re talking about gentle ways to make sugar consumption slightly less convenient, thereby moving people away from the concentrated dose. What we want is to actually increase people’s choices by making foods that aren’t loaded with sugar comparatively easier and cheaper to get.”

Unfortunately, I also no longer have access to scholarly journals, so I haven't been able to read the study. I do share your sentiment about the tendency to misconstrue findings in studies and glamorizing titles for shock value.

IAMA Request for after the blackout: a staffer working in a congressional office Jan 18th. by ohfuckitin IAmA

[–]rudhdogg 2 points3 points ago

There are multiple offices for the CA senators (and likely senators of other states as well). The numbers listed in Wikipedia's zip code directory were most likely somewhere on the east coast, because when I called around 4:30pm PST, both Senator Boxer and Senator Feinstein's offices were closed.

Here are numbers for both senators' CA offices, but I think ideally you should look up the office nearest to where you're located. Remember when you call that these senators will be voting on PIPA.

Senator Boxer: (916) 448-2787. Here are her other offices

Senator Feinstein: (415) 393-0707. Her are her other offices

I didn't include Representative Jerry McNerney because he is apparently already against SOPA.

Very good point! I had lots of friends on Facebook today sharing the link to Google, people I wouldn't have guessed were up-to-date with political current events. I even saw mass hysteria on Twitter with people tripping out about Wikipedia being down. It's probably a good thing in the long run that these sites didn't go down because it did help raise awareness. I still wish they would've at least had an informational snippet on their homepages, but oh well. Google and Wikipedia did an amazing job by blacking out and at the bottom line, served the purpose of the protest: getting people, and particularly the media, actually talking about SOPA/PIPA whereas they were almost silent before.

Question about lactose intolerance by kevindrosarioin Health

[–]rudhdogg 0 points1 point ago*

Eat more yogurt. I've found that as I've incorporated yogurt into my regular diet, I can tolerate certain amounts of lactose in my diet, like eating pizza or cake with milk, etc. Normal people have enough amounts of the lactase enzyme which breaks down lactose when you ingest it. Intolerant people don't make enough lactase enzyme, so lactose can't be broken down as well in our bodies. However, the bacteria in our stomach also do a lot of the digestion of foods we eat. Eating foods the promote certain bacteria can help in the digestion of lactose.

See this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1489325/

Yogurt bacteria have been shown to improve lactose digestion in lactose-intolerant individuals

I don't think there are any health implications beyond the discomfort that accompanies the inability to digest lactose. You might want to give it a shot at r/Askscience though.

Google, Amazon, Facebook considering self-imposed blackout in protest of SOPA by cg2916in politics

[–]rudhdogg 1 point2 points ago

I'll do it for you:

I've made the case in some other threads for GoDaddy's complete destruction. But I think this passage from the book Altered Carbon says it best.

"So if someone idiot politician. Some power player, tries to execute policies that harm you or those you care about, take it personally. Get angry. The Machinery of Justice will not serve you here—it is slow and cold, and it is theirs, hardware and soft-. Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power slide out from under with a wink and a grin. If you want justice, you will have to claw it from them. Make it personal. Do as much damage as you can. Get your message across. That way you stand a far better chance of being taken seriously next time. Of being considered dangerous. And make no mistake about this: being taken seriously, being considered dangerous, marks the difference—the only difference in their eyes—between players and the little people they liquidate, your displacement, your torture and brutal execution with the ultimate insult that it's just business, it's politics, it's just the way of the world, it's a tough life, and that it's nothing personal. Well fuck them. Make it personal."

No questions, just wanted to say I am very good friends with Mustafa (we were roommates throughout college) and he's told me a lot about you. You've been a great inspiration to both of us. It's awesome to know I'm only 1 degree of separation away from the guy who's revolutionizing education haha. And the videos are very helpful (using Biochem and Physics for MCAT at the moment), so, thank you

Since no one's actually answered your question yet, this happened Friday. UC Davis students were nonviolently protesting tuition hikes and showing solidarity for fellow student protestors at UC Berkeley last week where police also had some questionable behavior. Here's an article from the UCD school newspaper: http://www.theaggie.org/2011/11/19/community-responds-to-police-actions-supports-non-violent-protesters-httpgoo-gl3bjgu-occupyucdavis-ucdavis/

In the process of applying to med school, we'll see how it goes. What are you up to? Oh, you should subscribe to r/ucdavis if you haven't already. And here's that video of the students getting maced by cops on the Quad

Nope, sorry man. I'm an alum, graduated in 2010. Not in Davis anymore. Have fun if you do go. Seems like UCD is still as as active as ever, not sure if you saw the students getting maced by the cops
