Plenty of scenes with incorrect aspect ratio. I hope the makers of this thing never went to film school – because if they did, then they've wasted their money.

Now that I'm in Japan, how can I drastically improve my language ability? by fishyMcFishin japan

Do you know any options for watching Japanese TV abroad, outside of Japan?

Avoid the invisible ghetto at all costs. This is not specific to Japan, this applies to all situations where individuals go and live in another country where another language is spoken:

It is extremely easy to fall into the trap of unconsciously and pretty much by default surrounding yourself with English-speaking people and spending most of your day speaking English. Why? Because suddenly you notice that you have so much in common with that one English-speaking person who –wow!– is from the States too. What are the odds! Interacting and bonding like that with every or any given person who can speak English in the US would be ridiculous. But abroad, you suddenly end up spending most of your days speaking English to your new English-speaking BFFs and then you maybe even share a flat and so on and so on. That self-ghettoisation happens almost by default, because by nature humans have a preference for the familiar. You really have to make an active effort to resist that and create exposure to and surround yourself with Japanese. Yes, even in Japan that can take active effort to do.

Teacher sent me up for dress code for this shirt today. Dean wrote the referral, but after speaking with the assistant principal, he told me my freedoms protected me from things like this and let me off the hook. by runner_fagin pics

As far as I recall, I was the one who blamed "the system" (the school and the country, in this case), and you pinned the blame on the individuals.

I do agree though that the individuals' job security concerns do play a role – but if most people's livelihoods are threatened, that too is a systemic problem.

Ah yes, and I guess two out of three educators in the story isn't a pattern but just something we should only blame on errant individuals.

It's a measure of just how much the school (and probably the country) is propagandised in relation to Palestinians to see that education establishment representatives consider it inappropriate to ask for freedom.

I spent the last 6 months of my life researching the physics of helicopters and put my findings all in one video series for the masses. They're way more complicated than you'd think. by MrPennywhistlein Physics

You want me to make and send you a tcpdump capture? I don't think that's necessary. First, I'm pretty sure HTTPFox will give you enough info without having to do tcp-dumping just to get at some lousy HTTP requests, and second, I'm pretty sure you can reproduce this yourself:

  1. Set your Youtube profile to never show higher-quality video.

  2. Start playing the playlist and fullscreen it. Notice that even if the first video still obeys your never show me higher-quality video, it nevertheless will switch up to 480p every time a new video in the playlist starts playing fullscreen (and you have to switch it back to 360p again and again and again and again – every fucking time).

  3. There is no step three.

I suppose your "Boyfriends birthday" is the day that all your boyfriends celebrate their anniversaries.

Oh no. That FUCKING YouTube bug is back again. Apparently it doesn't matter how often I tell the player, and that my profile settings also say to never show me higher-quality video: Google once again totally ignores those settings and I have to manually switch down from 480p to 360p each time, and sure enough, once the next video in the playlist loads, it again starts loading that next clip in 480p and I have to manually switch down AGAIN.

That it gives me that never play higher quality option with it totally ignores is possibly even more aggravating than if this fake checkbox wasn't there.

(480p won't do for me because I'm bandwidth-restricted and I need 360p or else the video will stutter.)

PS: To top it all off, there appears to be no straightforward way of contacting Google and telling them about their bugs. (If you know one, then please tell me.)

You know, that would actually be really interesting to see voting patterns mapped out over time, and how they change as different countries go to sleep and wake up/go to work/get home, etc. SomebodyMakeThis.
