Questions about my RSX ecu by gr33nspanin Honda

[–]roguealchemist 2 points3 points ago

That sucks, sorry to here it mate. Yes, you can go to the dealer; however, I believe they will need the vehicle and all the keys there. If you no longer have a master key, then they will have to make one. It just keeps adding up the cost.

You didn't have a K-Pro or any Hondata flashes on that ECU did you? If you have the S/N I will gladly keep an eye out for it. I'm always looking at clubrsx and craigslist.

VTEC vs. i-VTEC. by YoKaySoin Honda

[–]roguealchemist 4 points5 points ago

This is mostly accurate; however, it depends on the engine you are talking about. The RSX BASE K20A3 engine engages i-VTEC at 2200 RPM however there is very limited as it only affects the intake valve timing. The boost is more for fuel economy and less about power. The RSX Type-S K20A2 engine engages at 5800 RPM. It effects both the intake and exhaust valves. From experience it feels like a kick in the pants when it engages.

I couldn't find anything about the i-VTEC on your Element's K24A4 engine.

JAKE, PLAY HALF LIFE 2. SERIOUSLY. by sytrixin gaming

[–]roguealchemist 1 point2 points ago

I just realized how old I am. The point of even having Steam initially was to play Half-Life 2.

When I started on Steam it was a essentially a requirement, if you were on Steam, you played Half-Life 2 and vice versa.

Well I'm giving up for the night, I have a hunch that it's something like a late 80's/early 90's Chevy Beretta. I have no solid facts, just a hunch.

sucks that the easily visible rear wheel is a "doughnut" spare. OEM wheels are easy to identify. From the picture they appear to be 5 pointed star pattern, it's not visible enough for detail or to determine if it is a hubcap.

A lot of cars use a 5 pointed star pattern OEM wheel though.

2008 Civic vibration at highway speeds by Cballerin Cartalk

[–]roguealchemist 0 points1 point ago

It could be a bearing, typically though they will begin "whirring" before noticeable vibration.

I know you said the tech advised the tires are fine; but, my g/f had the same issue with her '08 FG1 about 20,000 miles in. It was because the tires started cupping because she hadn't had them rotated. Honda said they should be rotated every 6 months which, I found to be a bit extreme. We bought all new rubber, and she hasn't had the issue sine. (knock on wood)

What were the days after 9/11 like? by argonautsin AskReddit

[–]roguealchemist 3 points4 points ago

I hope you get to read this. I was debating even to bother at this point; however, I realized even if no one reads this I put it out there in the very least memorial of a friend.

I was 18 a Senior in high school. Being on EDT at the time 1st period was just as mundane as any other Tuesday. During the release between periods I heard some excited yelling hear and there, I generally payed no attention as there was always banter between friends during this time. I walked into my second period class (American History), the teacher had the TV on. It wasn't too unusual as that teacher was very laid back and had us watch history documentaries. As I passed the screen to get to my desk I glanced at it saying aloud, "Oh, wow that's a big fire..." My teacher interrupted me sharply, "SHHHH Be quiet!" As I settled into my desk I had become increasingly aware that the fire was in the WTC. I noticed as other kids shuffled in, that some of the 1st period kids were not leaving. Another kid in class leaned over and told me in a hushed tone that a plane had crashed into the tower. Just at this time a plane appeared in frame. In the milliseconds that passed from that instant, I knew that this was no accident. The sinking gut feeling settled just before the second plane impacted the tower.

That was the instant that the shock took over. My brain began a dizzying over analyzation of every frame that flashed in front of my eyes for the next 2 hours. The class sat in awe and near silence as we watched the next events unfold on live TV. I recall, some minutes later watching the fires burn from nearly every possible angel, "My God, those towers are going to collapse." I frightened the girl next to me, she asked, "What do you mean?" I explained that due to the intensity of the fire, that the heat would cause the iron and steel to become weak and the weight of the top portion of the tower would cause it to buckle. I remember this so vividly, because, I had been training with the local Fire & Rescue department for 3 years by this point. We had studied many case studies of fires and also discussed many principles of fire science. This realization set absolute fear in me. My brain had already worked out a logical conclusion to the event that I knew, no one else in the room had even started to contemplate. I realized that most of the firefighters shown on the screen going into the buildings would never come back to their families and stations.

As the South tower buckled and collapsed, I still couldn't believe it. Shortly after that the North tower fell. In the chaos being streamed live into our souls all the cameras on the ground had gone dark. The anchors were in shock and the TV remained silent for several seconds. As the news station began to switch back to the cameras on the ground at ground zero the dust was beginning to give way to the sunlight. The audio was muffled; but, this is when the terror set in for me. You could hear the alarms cutting through the silence. Piercing the dust, debris, and my heart.

As dust covere people were staggering out of their hiding places in the post apocalyptic scenario, another kid in my class yelled out, "Listen to all those car alarms." I knew better, in a shaky voice on the verge of crying I exclaimed, "Those aren't car alarms!" I advised them and everyone else in the class that they were PASS devices (Personal Alert Safety System). I explained that they only alarm if the firefighter wearing them is not moving. I could see the impact that statement had on the other students' and the teacher's faces.

The school had extended the period due to the news. The administration was trying to figure out if they were closing the school early, etc. I only have 4 classes and then went to OJT for the last 2 periods.

The fourth period alarm rang and we all quietly and somberly exited the class and moved to our next class. I remember it being eerily quiet except for the sound of those alarms. Passing each open class room with their TV on to the scenes of utter destruction and dismay was so surreal. It seemed that sound was haunting me, that all other sounds were drowned out in my mind.

Once, I got to my fourth period class, I found my friend upset trying to call his Dad. He had just started this year at school; because, he and his mom just moved down here from NYC. His Dad worked in the WTC. I tried to comfort him; but, he was soothed when he talked to his mother. His Dad had called her and said he was okay, he couldn't talk long because the phones were on and off. This event would lead to a tragedy yet to unfold years later.

I went to work that day; but, found the call center I was working closed. I was a telemarketer for a credit card company that will remain unnamed. We closed due to the majority of our calls being to NY. We actually had agents earlier in the day call into the WTC shortly after the first plane impacted. I never felt more terrible for having that job. I couldn't imagine being the agent that called into an office and someone picking up the phone expecting emergency services and here we are pitching them a credit card with a 4.9% intro rate!

We remained out of work for a week and a half. After that, we just couldn't make the numbers and our contract was pulled. I was laid off on October 31st.

In those mere weeks we witnessed a dramatic shift in discussions and ideas. There wasn't anywhere you could go without seeing an American flag. The unity was great the public out poring of donations to fire fighters and police was intense. I remember early jumping on board with the idea to go to war. Until, it was declared a war on terror. Once the fear subsided and rational thought returned to me I knew there was no way to win a war on terror.

After highschool my friend and I hung out from time to time (He was better friends with my best friend, they hung out all the time) In 2003 he moved back to NY, he hated it here and he wanted to be closer to his father. About a year later unable to cope with the depression since 9/11 my friend's Dad committed suicide. Unable to cope with the depression since his father committed suicide, my friend also took his own life. By this time I had lost contact with him for some time. I didn't even find out until February this year.

A short story about my baby. by th3battulain Honda

[–]roguealchemist 1 point2 points ago*

I had a day like this, was heading to work in my '03 RSX-S accelerating with traffic I shifted into third, pushed the clutch to go to 4th and nothing. Couldn't even pull it out of 3rd until I coasted down. Got it towed to the shop. They say I need to do the slave. I opt for doing the slave and master pick up my car 2 or 3 days later.

It is now my g/f's Birthday, we were on our way out to dinner. I of course want to take my car 'cause I missed it. We got 6 miles down the road went to shift into 3rd, I hear BOOM. I try to pull the gear out and can't again. Pulled over and stopped. Pulled it out of gear. Clutch pedal has pressure but there is no clutch action. Get it towed back to the shop. They open it up to find my clutch shattered.

Apparently, when I got my short block replaced for a thrown rod bearing. That mechanic, a different one than did my clutch slave and master, didn't put the pilot bearing in the crank and left out an alignment pin for the bell housing. The new slave and master put enough pressure on to cause the alignment to tweak enough to catch a dampening spring on the clutch. It ripped the clutch apart.

Because the pilot bearing wasn't installed the 1200 miles the new engine was in, the transmission input shaft had worn down. So I had to have the transmission rebuilt. $3300 two weeks later, I finally got it back and absolutely still love it!

TL;DR: Shattered my clutch on my Girlfirend's Birthday on the way out to dinner; because, of a mechanic's mistake after spending thousands on rebuilding my engine from a thrown rod bearing. I now had to spend another $3300 to get a new clutch, master & slave, and a transmission rebuild.

PS: this was all happening in the same two weeks the g/f and I were moving in together so all the cash I got from selling everything I owned went to this and not buying the new stuff we had planned.

LOL, no; however, my mom's side of the family is from Greensboro, NC. I am a native Floridian my self. I expect many do it for southern pride, and I'm sure there are people that do it for the reasons you listed. We still cannot group them all into that boat simply for volunteering to do it.

Walked into the wrong pub ... by mangipngin WTF

[–]roguealchemist 45 points46 points ago

It looks like it is displayed with a historical accuracy intent. What with the model Nazi rocket hanging from the rafters. There also appears to be other WWII related things around it.

Jumping to this conclusion of WTF would be like Americans chastising the people playing the Confederate soldiers in Civil-War reenactments as racists and bigots. They are just portraying a role for historical purposes.

Not sure if BMW parked to block in the asshole who stole the spot, or if the BMW was the asshole who stole the spot and the other driver brilliantly waited till the opposite spot opened up and they backed all the way through pushing the BMW out into the aisle.

My money is on the later. Brilliant!

Yes, technically tooth paste works just like polishing compound on your teeth. I would still recommend using the proper sanding steps to get through all of the corrosion if your headlamps are really bad. But, if they are just starting to fade, any polishing compound will help, including tooth paste.

I tired to find out the polishing compound they use at my oil change place. That stuff is amazing. I go to a full service quick oil change place. $65 gets me Mobile 1 oil and filter, washer fluid top off, nitrogen in the tires, carpets vacuumed, and the head lamps polished. Can't beat it.

A CAI on the RSX is a bit more difficult to install. Most kits come with a washer fluid bottle re-locator or a reduced size fluid bottle. So the pumps need to be moved over etc. This can be difficult for some; but, realistically it's just time consuming. I have an Injen CAI on mine and love it. As for hydro lock, many people don't seem to understand you would need to fully submerge the filter. I know people on clubrsx that have insisted they did this just by driving in the rain. I don't buy it, maybe they got a little water sucked up and if caused them to stall.
