bicycle or on foot in that order. definitely not during the panic. bikes great for coasting and moving quiet. you can still have a backpack on a bike and can be used later to build a dynamo.

it attacks the brain but resides in the whole body. just adding to your post. the micro-organisms would abandon the host effectively embalming the body. can we get past these questions that are easily answered with "read max brooks zombie survival guide"? oh and resident evil after movie 2 is a joke...not zombie movies anymore. i like the walking dead infection theory. everyone is infected and everyone will reanimate after death. no matter what the cause. bites are just a way to get staph infection leading to fever and death. this is a revolutionary idea.

long crowbar or machete is still my favorite. blades don't need reloading. people do overlook blade weapons...they shouldn't as long as long as they are real. someone mentioned an aluminum bat. most metal bats are hollow and thin. remove the cap and see for yourself. it won't last.

a decapped head can still bite. therefore it needs a secondary blow to destroy the brain. your right about it being a good choice. also, anyone who thinks a sword isn't valid needs to read THE survival guide and the walking dead comic. michonne is downright devastating with her katana. machete beats the sword for most because of familiarity. someone also mentioned that arterial blood spray is a concern. zombies don't have blood pressure or liquid blood. (not talking runner zombies, not worth considering because it is un-survivable.) zombie blood is congealed and more gel like. if it wasn't for that simple fact you couldn't melee combat the undead. it's comforting to know that there will be swords passed up.

short answer is for as long as the power is on i would think. tv stations wouldnt broadcast anything but a government instruction. same for radio. internet might be shutdown to control information flow (egypt etc) they would probably turn off all the broadcasts unless they had something to dishout worth while. btw "diary of the dead" kept telcom longer than i expected. it was great how romero showed how the internet kept giving real first hand information while the news were just doing crowd control.

i saw that episode too. honestly without more renewable sources like hydro, solar and wind we are setup for electrical collapse should an outbreak occur. zombie survival guide states that if you own a genny/electric make it unnoticeable. others will target you because of your fortune. blackout curtains, sound proofing etc. if you want to have some backups and you dont have much money get in the habit now of going off grid. lookup DIY plans for dynamos. charge your mp3 player with a powerdrill and an old car battery. it wont make a dent in your electric bill but it will on your flabby arms or legs.
