TROPHY CASE

Nothing like an aeropress to show you just how shitty your grinder is. by robotsongsin Coffee

[–]robotsongs[S] 0 points1 point ago

But that's the beauty of pourover-- get a V60, digital thermometer, learn proper preparation and you're 80% or more of the way there. Pourover has such a ridiculously low buy-in that just about anyone can get a phenominal cup with the basics. The only steep curve is the grinder, and as you know that plays a gigantic part. As soon as my business is more solid, I'm getting a Preciso and fucking NAILING it! It'll be awesome.

For now, I'm stuck with a hario mini hooked up to a cordless drill. I can manage.

I really think that pic should be the linkback to reddit.com in the upper left...

My wallet agrees.

I was talking about starting another tank when one of my employees walks by and says "Seriously? You put in sooo much work on that thing. Is it really worth it?" I laughed. She now knows way more about pH and nitrates than she ever thought she would working at a preschool.

So say Amano.

You started a subreddit about nerd stuff so that you could surround yourself with like-minded nerds who talk about the same nerd stuff.

Be proud, son.

Well, I can definitely tell a difference with my pourovers against a place like FourBarrel, and this is one of the only differences I can see (though they might very well have an RO system hidden somewhere). The citrus on theirs vs mine using the same beans, same extraction time is very different.

I mean, hell, I know this is bad-- it's a Hario Mini. I just didn't know it was quite this bad. Whatevs, by the amount of downvotes I got on this, I guess I should just shut up about it.

OK, that's fucking funny.

I'm sure it's some super high-level magic naming convention that only people with all ADA equipment can understand. For now, I'll call it poopypants.

Oh my god! That's an excellent deal! From the way you scraped that, it looks twice as big. Againg, great job. And I agree-- having open clear runs is way cool.

Absolutely post update pics!

I think I agree with just about everything you say. I hadn't seen it that way. Yeah, now thinking about it, I guess they both just represent the same thing here, one more an aggressive salesman than the other. Interesting.

Here's the deal on why I inherently feel anti Frank here. In a previous life I was an audio engineer. In another previous life I was a salesman for some high end products (tools and whatnot). Both of these fields, and audio especially, are completely fucking littered with unending claims made of a product's superiority, accompanied by an utter dearth of any substantive fact and actual science behind them. It's infuriating to watch people blow chucks of money in this blind adherance to a product because they were sold on an idea. While admittedly a substantial character flaw, it drives me insane and over the years I've developed this 6" thick skin of skepticism which is a pretty aggressive bullshit detector.

I saw Frank come in with flowery marketing speak (which at first seemed logically sound), telling about how wonderful the power sand and system were, and then Tom came in and laid the actual science down, with Frank just getting butthurt and not actually engauging with the questions poised. This to me is the essence of fraudulent behavior. It's the reason that I can't do religion-- when someone ultimately relies on correlation and blind faith to dismiss valid questions, I feel it does a disservice to the world. Thus, I see the behavior in Frank and I associate it with all the other baggage I've got coming in to this. Valid or not, that's my feeling on it, and I bet there's a couple others out there who might agree.

Also, not to beat the limit of too many posts on a friday night (LIVIN THE DREAM!!!), but this is actually a good idea. It takes a long-term eye though-- you should post that very idea in a new submisison, link to it in the sidebar as an ongoing data gather, and after some months see what comes up and what's the most voted on. Do it.

God that's sexy. You did really, really well with the balance of that one. If this weren't a subreddit about plants, I'd say it would be a shame to plant something in there. But I wouldn't do that. Not here.

That's a 20L, right? What a great frame to work with. You get to play with crowded vs open on such a linear progression. I could see one of those in my future.

That is the coolest resource ever. Thank you for posting this. I wish I would have had this a year ago or so.

Right, but this whole conversation is about the science and application of substrate, not the artistic merits of it's placement.

I mean, I agree with you that Wazeter has a great eye, but this thread was so indicative of the "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" mindless repetition of the Amano system. It's not like everything with an ADA label is somehow imbued with super powers-- their just overpriced chemical mixtures, even if they happen to be either the very right chemical mixtures of very innocuous chemical mixtures that make people feel good about their purchase.

What I gathered from this discussion is that the substrate additives from ADA don't really do much in the grand scheme of things, and Wazeter feel apart trying to deny this. The topic at hand was the science, or lack thereof, and Barr had this one. Now, if we're talking display and aesthetics, yes, Wazeter's looks to have a bit more chops, at least when it comes to the whole minimalist Amano style. I doubt Wazeter could really force himself to do well in a strong Dutch scape.

That's good to know, though it's not intuitive.

But thanks for all your work you've done here. You really classed the place up and it looks great!

Cool. Also, I went to submit my daily link and realized there's no "submit link" button anywhere.

Better take care of that or we're going to get a lot of algae here!

Edit: NVM, found it. That was NOT obvious to me this morning! (yes, even if it says in big white font, "submit") lol. I need coffee.
