My wife called me crazy. A random guy I passed said I was devoted. What do you think? by esac17in running

[–]ro_ana_maria 0 points1 point ago

I looove running when it's snowing.. the feeling is amazing. This winter there has been no snow so far, but this morning when I woke up the snow was pouring from the ski, everything was white. Just got back from doing 16km, it was one of the best runs ever.

You've got a time machine but it only has enough fuel to make one round-trip. Do you go to the past, or the future? by workingdankochin scifi

[–]ro_ana_maria 0 points1 point ago

Also, don't worry about leaping into the future and indavertently jumping into the harsh vacuum of space because Earth got blown up by an asteroid. Your one-time-use disposable time machine won't let you do that. This is a no-risk trip.

I know this only refers to the future, but because of the "no-risk" part it could be interpreted as saying that you could only travel to a time when earth exists and has suitable conditions for humans..

Pre-run nutrition? (scary story) by silentcrsin running

[–]ro_ana_maria 0 points1 point ago

Always try to eat something after a run, even something small like a fruit will do, it doesn't have to be a huge meal.

A very similar thing happened to me last year, also at the vet. I didn't actually faint, just got very dizzy and had to sit down. I always eat after running and never had any problems, but on that day I returned after my run to find my dog suddenly really sick, so I just took her to the vet immediately and forgot all about anything else. They did all sorts of tests so I had to stay there for almost three hours, during which I had nothing to eat, so my blood sugar was probably really, really low at that point.

Since then I've starting carrying one of those cereal running bars in my pocket for longer runs and eating it right after finishing.. fortunately I've had no other problem since.

New Way to Drink while Running - [3:22] (xpost from r/engineering) by [deleted]in running

I think he's saying in some races they give you a whole bottle, instead of the cup.

If you have switched to midfoot striking while running, where are you sore? by urraca500in running

[–]ro_ana_maria 0 points1 point ago

I switched about two years ago, so my memory is not so fresh.. I was running 4-5km max at the time, and at first I was doing intervals alternating between forefoot and heel strike, gradually increasing the forefoot part, until one day I realized that forefoot felt more natural than heel-striking. I remember my calves were killing me at first, but this went away about two-three months later.

Running in the cold by DamaAgcriain Fitness

[–]ro_ana_maria 7 points8 points ago

Like DiarrheaPocket said, keep your tongue against the roof of your mouth, it really works. I've used the trick all last winter, and started using it again now that the weather is getting cold.

There are also some running masks that cover your mouth and nose. I can't use them because I hate having anything over my face while I'm running, it makes me feel like I'm suffocating; but I see a lot of other people using them with no problems, so they might work for you.

Javascript library for creating diagrams by ro_ana_mariain javascript

[–]ro_ana_maria[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yes, like that. The library I've found seems to be built on top of raphaeljs, but it has some extra features, like built in shapes and arrow types. Right now I'm comparing them to see if it's easier to modify those, or just built my own directly with raphaeljs. Since what I need to do is pretty custom, the second version might actually be better. Thank you!

Hmm.. I'm curious.. could you tell me why it would be better to start from scrath? I was thinking it would be easier to expand on something existing, especially since the time for the project is not very generous.

Also, although I have quite a lot of experience with javascript in general, very little of it had to do with canvas, so I was thinking that looking at the way the library is built might help me a lot.

Thank you for the suggestion, I took a look at Google Charts, but it seems to be more suitable for charts, not diagrams.

And the award for worst running advice ever, goes to.... by InfiniteLiveZin running

[–]ro_ana_maria 1 point2 points ago

As Dead_Muskrat said, I'm sure he was just trying to be helpful. I tried telling him why I run the way I do, but it was really hard to interrupt his explanations.. so in the end I just thanked him for the advice and went back to running with my normal form.

Weird timing.. an old guy stopped me this week when I was running in the park, to tell me the same thing she is saying.. and he used the exact same arguments, maybe he had seen this video?

Tell me I'm not the only one that thinks this looks ridiculous. by tallyfreein running

[–]ro_ana_maria 5 points6 points ago

I have a waistband, so the bottle is on my lower back, and even after a long time of running with it, sometimes I'm still bothered by the sound of the splashing water.. I can't imagine what it would be like to have the bottle right next to my ears.

I have a few questions to my fellow amateur astronomers with Celestron telescopes. by CelestronD00Din Astronomy

[–]ro_ana_maria 1 point2 points ago

I have the exact same telescope as you. You have to align the finder with the telescope first. You should do this during the day, it's much easier. First you need to find an object that is as far away as possible (maybe a tall building or something) and center it in the main telescope. Then adjust the finder so that the same object is also centered there. It's going to seem tricky the first few times, it used to take me about 10 minutes, now I can do it in 2 minutes tops.

Regarding the wheels, I've never experienced this problem, maybe there is something wrong with your telescope?

The Barlow was also ok for me, but you should know that when the image is magnified 3 times, so is the turbulence, so if the atmosphere isn't very clear you will not get a good image.

Yes, I was also thinking about a mistake, but I thought it was actually "14 days", if we're talking about fresh looking apples.

the average apple you see in the supermarket is actually 14 months old

Wow.. this is either a mistake or a huge exaggeration..

Hi Runnit, i'm new to running and I get really dizzy when I run. by SpaceLeechin running

[–]ro_ana_maria 0 points1 point ago

Definitely breathe through you mouth, I used to try and breathe through my nose when I first started (because every sports teacher I've ever had said that that was the proper way to breathe) and I always felt like I didn't have enough air.

Also, breathe with your stomach, not chest.. you'll be able to get more oxygen that way.

I have a belt with a 0.5L bottle.. it's enough for my runs (longest one so far, 22km). It also has a tiny pocket woth space for a gel and my phone.

I chose the belt because I absolutely hate having anything in my hands while running. I've found that if you choose a belt, no matter the model, you're going to have to try it out a little to find the best height to put it so it doesn't move.

The one thing that was a little bit annoying and hard to get used to was the sound that the water makes when it moves and hits against the bottle (not sure what the english word is for this).. I don't run with music, so it was very obvious at first.. but I got used to it pretty quickly.

Just a couple friendly reminders about fitness. by Its_Entertainingin Fitness

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think people who are confusing them are just beginners, and they've never experienced any injury before.

I had the same problem when I started adding distance to my running, even though I knew I was ok there was always this question in the back of my mind that maybe I was injuring myself. Then one day I experienced some pain in my hip, and I knew from the first second that it was not a good kind of pain, and I have to stop. It was entirely different.

I know those different types of pain are described in great detail on the Internet, but until you experience each one of them yourself it's pretty hard to know what to expect.

Mountain race - with hiking sticks or without? by ro_ana_mariain running

ends up carrying them on his pack the entire time, because he really has no idea how, and sucks at it.

That's what I'm worried about, that I'll end up doing the same thing. Except that since it'a a much shorter race, I won't have a backpack so I'll have to carry them in my hands.. I'm not trying to break any world records, but I definitely want to do my best. And enjoy the race as much as possible, since it's my favourite hiking place :) I think I'll just go without this time, and save the poles for other, longer, races.

Well, I don't live in a mountain area and I can't go and try them before the race, so I guess I'll just go without. I'll just buy them and try to get used to them for other future races. Thank you for the answers.

Yes, I'm from Europe, I had no idea the poles were not common in the US. I see them used quite a lot around here, even for shorter races, that's why I was considering them.

I'm mostly worried about using them for the first time ever in a race, not sure if that's smart.

Also, you mention they are great for climbing, but what I am more concerned about is the downhill part I've mentioned, where the chance of slipping is pretty high (I know the course, I went hiking there several times and it was pretty difficult with all the rubble, even though I had mountain shoes). Are the poles any good in this situation? Uphill climbing is not really a concern for me, yes, it's difficult, but I can manage it.
