Night time in Tokyo safe? by jkredzin Tokyo

The scary thing about Tokyo is that everyone looks normal, even the bad guys. Suddenly you're taking the escalator at the subway station and bam! you're stabbed.

Most of the people who haven't been found were swept out to sea when the tide receded. If the affected folks have given up, at least the police haven't - they've showed up recently to canvass the area and the water to continue searching. Areas that can be rebuilt seemed to have been really cleaned already - after all they did search and save personal belongings and smaller things.

In NY an ice cream truck can't even play the jingle anymore unless it's moving.

I would get those DIY snack kits that are pretty cool- you'd have to get them off Rakuten though.

How long can you stay to do work? There are volunteer buses that leave Friday night and return Sunday afternoon that go to Miyagi.

They are actually carting it away to be compacted and melted down, but there's just so much that needs to be sorted and sifted through (there are volunteers who pick up photos and clean them to return to the owners) and there was talk of finding bodies inside cars too, so it's not easy going by any means.

One temple got burned down (though I don't know why). There's another shrine that apparently the local folks did a bucket brigade kind of thing to save - one side of the wooden main gate is a bit singed.

I definitely agree - you can't rationalize anger against nature- you can only come to terms with it somehow, and that why it feels even more sad to see all of the destruction.

Caritas helps shelter and feed you but you're pretty much on your own to get here. I did a lot of searching around and it seemed by far the most reasonable one- the alternatives are the are volunteer buses on weekends. You can try looking up PeaceBoat Japan- I think they have reasonably priced programs.

The town apparently is currently debating whether or not to drop money on a new levee or use the money to rebuild the town. It still feels like everyone is waiting for someone to do or say something.
