Knife Disarm Grappling by phaunain martialarts

[–]redrobot5050 0 points1 point ago

Wishful thinking about unknown scenarios, from armchair theorists.

Yeah, this is the freakin' internet. The place for armchair theorists. How many knife attacks have your survived where it was kill or be killed?

The video starts out by saying this is a worst case scenario -- as in Burt Richardson wouldn't ever want to be defending against a knife attack on his back.

That said, if you're in "guard" and he's able to pull a knife, it's over. Here's some data on edged weapons assaults against police officers:

  1. The most popular assault technique utilized by the attacker was found to be the hammer strike — either straight down or diagonally.

  2. The victim tends to squat in an effort to take a path which offers perceived escape.

  3. Many people seldom saw the edged weapon that penetrated their body. They failed to recognize the danger cues due to faulty perception.

  4. Knife attacks were found to be exceptionally accurate, to penetrate deeper that some bullets, creating remarkable permanent cavities and rip through numerous organs in one stroke In reality, within their respective ranges, knives are superior to firearms as far as lethality is concerned.

Source: http://www.lwcbooks.com/articles/edgedweapons.html

Also from the page: In the middle of a confrontation, when the attacker pulls the knife in the middle of the fight, only about 3/85 police officers saw the blade. 10/85 realized they were being stabbed repeatedly, and nearly every knife fight goes to the ground, because you have to grapple with the attacker to control the knife (where data shows you will still be repeatedly stabbed).

My advice wasn't "Don't go to the ground". It was "get THE FUCK out of there." Running or complying (if they just want your wallet, give it up) is the best approach when being threatened with a knife.

People don't like to keep hearing it on this subreddit, but there's very little you can do to counter a knife. If they're coming to kill you, you won't even see it until it's already come back out of you, and heading right back into you. Your real, best line of self-defense is to defuse/de-escalate, or extract yourself from the situation before a blade comes out. This means projecting an alpha stance, situational awareness, and verbal self-defense.

The very prospect of discussing how to use BJJ for knife defense is a martial arts masturbatory fantasy, and is the very realm of armchair theorists like you and I.

The situation comes down to this: If you have him in guard, he can't pull the knife, he can't stab you. If you don't have control over both his hands, and the strength to keep him there, you are going to be stabbed repeatedly.

This video is about as realistic as the rest of the knife defense videos out there. Running is still your best defense, if possible, because otherwise you're going to get first hand experience with the 30% fatality rate a stab to the rib cage.

And, head and shoulders above the "Don't go to the ground" solution proposed by Krav Maga guys.

No, it's not. If an attacker pulls a knife, running or disabling with a quick strike and running are still your best options.

Realistically, as Dogbrother pointed out, the knife attacker wouldn't have pulled a knife until you were on your back. And if he could pull a knife, you didn't have proper hand/arm control in your guard. He can stab you anywhere (legs, shin, thighs) and it hurts and causes damage. All you can do is a weak one-on-one wrist grab in return.

Running (if it's an option) is still your best option. Not going to the ground (unless you're an expert in BJJ) is still a better option.

IBM banned employees from using Siri after it was revealed that Apple got a copy of everything you spoke to it by josefonsecain technology

[–]redrobot5050 0 points1 point ago

but spent years running ads that alienated the other 94% (I'm a PC).

Here's what I'm saying: Not all of the 94% of people using windows were willingly using windows. Or were liking windows. Around the time those ads came out, XP was riddled with security holes, PC vendors were selling crippleware, adware, and 90-day limited trialware as "value added" instead of "crapware", which devalued the user experience. Viruses, Spyware, Trojans, Drive-By installs -- Windows was a nightmare to use for those who just wanted to compute and not think about it.

Nowadays, between Windows 7 getting a lot of things right with their design (mostly copying OS X on how to do user authorization) and Microsoft Security Essentials (free, low-hassle, effective anti-virus/spyware) the user experience is a whole other story.

Further, I think you're implying Apple as being the "cheapest" option for personal computing. Which is just not correct.

Wasn't implying that at all. Don't have a clue where you're getting that from. I was implying that people were willing to pay [a premium] for ease-of-use and a non-windows experience. The market seems to validate that. In terms of growth, Apple's overall market share is small, (10-12% if you don't count iPads as computers, 25% if you do.) but their growth rate is something like triple the rest of the industry. This is why their stock is so highly valued right now.

Your logic implies 100% of the people who bought a Windows-based PC were 100% satisfied, instead of taking the cheapest, easiest, path-of-least resistance towards their personal computing.

Considering that the campaign worked and sales of Macs tripled from their death spiral, your logic is highly flawed.

Again, it's posturing, and people are going to remember who started that fight.

Because even if he wins the fight. He then has a criminal court case against him. And after that, a civil court case, where you be sure to find some aggressive, newly-out-school-and-hungry-for-work lawyer promising that this guy is going to earn for you, after he gets out of County Jail.

Also, no amount of fighting skill is going to save him when you secretly cut his brakes two or three weeks later.

Your logic is bad here. If I was trying to use my passion for landscape photography as a way to impress women (because women love passion), it would be stupid of you to immediately jump to, "Yeah, because climbing everest isn't a death wish."

Most martial artists are probably the nicest people you know. The more you understand about self-defense and physical violence, the less you're willing to escalate. Which means you're in more control, and you're confident in shaky situations. Martial Arts change you, and quite frankly, for the better.

Does this mean that I'm going to get into a fight anytime soon, just because I have training? Fuck no. There is very little in the 1st world worth coming to blows over -- anyone who's one step ahead of a martial artist will just pull a knife when you're both clinched up and it's "so long and thanks for all the fish." But the confidence you get from it shows in every situation.

It sounds like you have a really great guy here. Don't let the insecurity volanco erupt and kill your relationship.

She's actually not that ugly physically. It's more things like her attitude when Stephen King reviews your book and you public say things like "What the hell does S.K. know about vampires?"

And fantasizing about being seduced as a teenager by a 103 dead virgin? And a really well house-trained wolf? I can get why any girl would want to be fought over by two incredibly attractive men at different ends of the spectrum...so long as they're still in middle school.

Yeah, but his rejecting her said something there, even if he didn't mean to. It was "I don't want to be your rebound guy" -- or "I'm not the easy guy pining for you, to make you feel good about yourself after you date a shithead."

it also said, "Your emotional ass in a sling, your neediness, it's not attractive to me." which demonstrates value. He's a nice guy -- helping you out -- but considering the state you're in, you'll pass.

It might be withholding, it might alpha, but sometimes one way to fake alpha is to be withholding in a non-douchey way.

Yeah, the horribly undersexed, overweight, sanctimonious "vampires glitter in sunlight" writer was on set helping see her "vision" come to life on film.

Patinson mentioned that he could really tell by the level of specificity coming from her that he was really helping he re-create her sexual fantasies. He was pretty grossed out.

[–]redrobot5050 0 points1 point ago

Ohhai1234,

Here's a good starting point for you to start: http://scoobysworkshop.com/

There's a lot on healthy nutrition, and how you can work out from home for 30-45 minutes a day with minimal equipment and still see some gains.

To be honest, if you want to get back into shape quickly, you should join a gym -- one with areas for squat cages, deadlifts, power cleans and jerks, and meet with a personal trainer at least once a month to tailor a program to you.

Best of luck to you. You might also want to crosspost into /r/fitness and see what they have to say.

Can core strength prevent injury by stabbing, and how best to minimise injuries by a sharp weapon? by Old_Gregggin martialarts

[–]redrobot5050 2 points3 points ago

Also, one last tip: Most of the fatal stabbings that happen are assassinations -- or at least murders. Someone getting stabbed "in self-defense" (I'm using the term ironically, as most countries don't recognize edge-weapons as self-defense outside of a home invasion situation) might be clumsy and inflict much less serious wounds, but a trained knifer is pretty much your worst nightmare.

He'll likely conceal it, get close to you, and strike when your back is turned. You won't even see the blade. At least, not until you've already been stabbed once or twice.

You could always make chainmail a new fashion statement. :)

Look up Starting Strength. /r/fitness might have some better resources, but you basically want to follow a program and eat healthy and you'll see big gains.
