Why do people compare 4e to a MMO? by liberatedpawnin rpg

[–]rednightmare 0 points1 point ago

I think it was the whole class roles thing. D&D had never formalized the tank/dps/healer thing before 4e and when they did it felt like they were catering to the MMO crowd.

How do we get melodrama out of games? by Tobisluin Games

[–]rednightmare 4 points5 points ago

Your title seems to disagree with your point.

Melodrama:

A sensational dramatic piece with exaggerated characters and exciting events intended to appeal to the emotions.

If games were melodramatic they would, by definition, have a plot that was much more than a reason to search a dungeon. Soap operas are melodramatic as are many movies (especially romantic comedies). There isn't anything wrong with melodrama so long as it is a deliberate choice on the part of the authors. Unintentional melodrama is bad. Bad melodrama is also bad (ever laughed when something was supposed to be tragic? That's bad melodrama, it failed to elicit the intended emotional response.)

The thrust of your post seems to be that game plots lack any real plot. To that I say, "Which games?"

Video games, as a medium, are still trying to find their voice. They haven't landed on the best way to form a narrative with an interactive experience. In recent years games have really been trying to recreate the summer blockbuster method of storytelling and for some games that really does work, to an extent. Other games have been experimenting with more subtle narratives, look at Journey or Flower and maybe Datura.

Game designers seem to be struggling with creating games that have a strong narrative while maintaining the interactivity. I don't think better writing will solve this problem. There are so many things that don't translate easily to video games, pacing or reconciling game play with narrative for example. I don't think this is an issue that is easily solved.

Warhammer has 22mm scale minis and D&D minis are 30mm.

Facebook To Buy Opera? Maybe. Here's What We Hear. by fpbeckerin software

[–]rednightmare 4 points5 points ago

If Opera was still mostly independent and not forced to include a bunch of crap social features I would stick with them, at least until FB inevitably screwed it up.

Facebook seems like a bad fit for Opera. Opera Unite is all about taking the power away from closed networks like Facebook. It might not have taken off, but that still seems like the Opera philosophy.

How To Write a [Campaign] in Three Days [xpost from r/writing] by brettchamberlinin rpg

[–]rednightmare 5 points6 points ago

Actually, if you follow this advice you will be finished your campaign prep before you even start the 3 days.

Moorcock says that he works out a rough outline and lists of people, places, themes and so on ahead of time so that he never needs to stop writing. When you think about a role playing campaign the writing is really replaced by the role playing. The GM doesn't write out all of the dialogue and moment to moment details ahead of time, they make an outline of the story and lists of things.

Lyndsay (of Dragon Chow Dice Bags) plays Pathfinder with Mom; Epic Hilarity ensues by coffeeswillerin rpg

[–]rednightmare 5 points6 points ago

Dragon Chow bags are the best dice bags you can get.

Here is why:

  • They are reversible. Two designs for the price of one!

  • They fit a lot of dice.

  • They are sewn to sit flat on the table, the bag won't fall over.

  • They have a drawstring that will actually seal the bag. Your dice won't escape.

  • She will make a custom bag for you with any fabric you can find.

  • There is a ton of variety to choose from.

D&D Encounters (and beyond): the Deep Gnome by fknbastardin rpg

[–]rednightmare 0 points1 point ago

Deep gnomes are wiry and lean with a body as hard as a slab of rock. Males are completely bald and beardless, while the females sport hair. Ranging from 3' to 3'6" (107 cm) in height and weighing between 40 and 45 lbs (20.4 kg), the deep gnomes are small enough to give them a size advantage when battling larger opponents.[2] Deep gnome complexions are sometimes described as "gnarled" and, like drow and duergar, are commonly dark in hue, with most deep gnomes demonstrating brown or gray skin, with dark gray eyes, as well as gray hair if female.[3] Deep gnomes do not live quite as long as their kin, with a life expectancy just under two centuries. Due to this and a number of cultural affectations, deep gnome children are considered adults at roughly twenty years of age.

Dice-cheating? by DTorakhanin rpg

Get a dice tower or bowl. It'll help curb cheating, be a delightfully geeky accessory and tidy up your game table.

I wanna make an app. (not sure if this is right place) by Ramu127in rpg

[–]rednightmare 1 point2 points ago

So you want to program? Swing by one of the programming subreddits and check their sidebar for the "learn to program" links. This definitely isn't the right place for that.

This is a much bigger project than I think you realize. I suggest you start here or maybe here if all you want to do is make a text adventure.

You could, of course, just play by email instead of going through all of the above trouble.

Anyone else find that 'epic' is a really overdone theme in video games? by dakhoin Games

[–]rednightmare 0 points1 point ago

Mechanically it isn't a great game, but that's not what we're talking about. Asura's Wrath begins at "epic" and it just keeps topping itself again and again and again. It never becomes bland in that sense.
