Pros and cons of a pc vs console? by jimothy123in truegaming

Not when you only buy console games used at steep discounts.

What is the WORST RPG you have ever played? by Plato_Karamazovin rpg_gamers

[–]rdh2121 0 points1 point ago

Haha, necro much? :P

Anyway, that's not my problem with Xenogears at all. In fact, I enjoyed the second disk more because it was over faster.

From one of my earlier posts:
"I went into it expecting a mind-blowing experience, but I was very disappointed overall, and to be honest, I was bored for the vast majority of the game, and had to force myself to finish it.

The characters were flat and unlikable in my opinion, except for maaaybe Citan. The battle systems were repetitive and clunky, and keeping up with and switching equipment between machines and characters was an infuriating chore that could take upwards of half an hour.

Also, the story was uninteresting; it clearly tried too hard and failed in the same way I feel that Evangelion failed. It was too top-heavy, too convoluted, and yet it still felt stale somehow. It tried to be too much which resulted in it being a general mess. Multi-generational entities mixed with panspermia, with omni-powerful mecha and a bit of "killing God" thrown in for kicks? Good grief. It also took itself way too seriously for the story it was trying to tell."

The best part of the game was the robot fighting minigame, and I don't even like fighting games.

FWIW I agree with you. A grail should definitely be nigh-unobtainable.

Pros and cons of a pc vs console? by jimothy123in truegaming

[–]rdh2121 0 points1 point ago

For me it's not about graphics power, or convenience, or better control setup; it's about the games.

There is only one PC game I have the least interest in playing: Civilization. Other than that, the platform has literally nothing to offer me. The vast majority of what I play is JRPGs and Nintendo franchises, neither of which you'll find on PC. Now, for those who are mainly interested in Brown Shooter 9 or DnD Hack 'n Slash 5, I agree that PC is the way to go, but my games are just not available on the PC platform.

Some would argue that you can just use an emulator and get the same experience, but this is clearly untrue. From having to tweak specific games, to bugs and inaccuracies in sound and graphics performance, emulators are really not worth the hassle when you can just play the game on the original system.

To list a few general reasons to go console over PC:

First of all, I believe that it's clearly cheaper. There are many who disagree with me, but I've yet to find a convincing argument that PC is the more affordable platform.

Next, many games are designed for consoles, which results in bad PC ports of many AAA franchises; though graphics quality may be higher on PC, the better gaming experience will be on the system the game was designed for. Closely related to this are compatibility issues that, while rare, are nonexistent for a console.

Also, PC gaming is far less social. Yes, you can voice chat with your guildies while raiding or whatever, but last week I threw a retro console party with 3 systems each on 3 TVs, and had a fun night of pizza and beer with about 15 friends. That wouldn't have been possible on a PC.

Organized my N64 collection, leaving a hole for each of the games I need for a fullset... by DarkKoboldin gamecollecting

Exactly. When it first came out, 13 year-old me beat the game the first time and got all the golden balloons, then got owned collecting silver coins on the spaceport levels. Gave up trying to beat the game, and decided to unlock TT instead. No dice. After getting smoked by TT's ghost 5 times in a row on the very first track, I gave up and put the game down.

Fast-forward a decade and a half, 26 year-old me sat down 6 months ago and played the game for 2 straight weeks until I'd beaten and unlocked everything. I then proceeded to do the same for Perfect Dark.

Do any of you have a seemingly impossible 'holy grail'? What is it, and why? by combustiblein gamecollecting

This is one of my grails as well, especially after what happened a few months ago.

The story:
I was over at a friend of mine's house talking about retro multi-systems like the Retro Duo, and he says, "yeah, I have a bootleg system like that I got at a Toys R Us for $50 a long time ago".

So, he proceeds to go pull out a CIB official Nintendo toploader. Needless to say he was a tiny bit excited when I explained to him what he actually had. I, on the other hand, was a tiny bit jealous, and have kept my eyes peeled for one for a decent price ever since.

I think that out of all systems the N64 probably has one of the highest good games/crap games ratios.

While Perfect Dark's graphics take a bit of getting used to again, the gameplay still holds up really well in my opinion. In fact, about a month ago I finally reached Rank 1: Perfect. That, along with unlocking T.T. in Diddy Kong Racing, is probably the gaming achievement I'm most proud of.

Final Fantasy Fans: From which title is your favorite Summon? by Qursein rpg_gamers

[–]rdh2121 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. I loved Bahamut in IV not only because of how awesome he looked, but also because of how awesome Giga Flare was as an attack. Rydia was an absolute powerhouse.

On the other hand. all 3 of FFVII's Bahamut summons have awesome animations that never seem to get old, especially Neo Bahamut.

DS/3DS games similar to Dragon Quest IX by LarksCallin gamingsuggestions

[–]rdh2121 2 points3 points ago

To your first point, Dragon Quest IV for DS implemented a "Tactics" system whereby you set guidelines for the party instead of controlling them directly. Dragon Quest V and VI expanded the Tactics system to allow you to set individual tactics for each party member. While these systems may not be quite as fleshed out as IX's system, I do think they are what you're looking for.

They also have plentiful side quests, bestiaries to complete, mini-games, and extensive post-game content, though no randomized content that I know of.

However, you should keep in mind that these games are remakes of older DQ games, and as such don't quite have the bells and whistles that IX does. The graphics, while good, are a bit dated. Even so, I definitely think they are worth your time.

They are a loosely-connected trilogy, so you may want to start with IV, but if you're worried about them not living up to your expectations, start with V, as it's probably the best of the series (and has one of my favorite RPG stories). If you like it, you can go back and play IV and VI.

If you haven't played them yet, definitely pick up Dragon Quests IV, V, and VI for the DS. All three are amazing, and would give you more of that awesome Dragon Quest fix!

Final Fantasy Fans: From which title is your favorite Summon? by Qursein rpg_gamers

[–]rdh2121 8 points9 points ago

Hmm, that's a tough question for me because I hardly ever use Summons. I guess Bahamut would be my favorite, but I can't decide whether I like FFIV's Bahamut or FFVII's better. VII's animation is probably my favorite.

FFIV's battle to earn Odin gets an honorable mention for scaring the crap out of 12 year-old me.

I laughed the hardest at Doomtrain for FFVIII; it gets my vote for the most ridiculous summon (though its status effects could be ridiculously helpful).

My first interactive children's book! Can you help Amy get her night light's back from the monsters so that she can escape her nightmare? by aarynellein books

[–]rdh2121 0 points1 point ago

Why did the monsters only steal the back of the night light? They might as well have stolen the whole thing if they had enough time to remove the back. Maybe they were trying to send the message that it had in fact been stolen instead of merely lost?

Which games, to you, are worthy of a perfect score? by LE_LE_LE_STFUin truegaming

Mad respect for Civ II, as it's the one I started with, but I'd have to go with IV as the most deserving of a perfect score in the series.

Australians who pre-ordered DIII from GAME getting completely hosed. by AlertAtheistin gaming

That's getting more into the legal side of the issue, which is not my strong point, especially since bankruptcy law can vary widely from country to country.

[–]rdh2121 2 points3 points ago

Accountant here. Pre-order money is not revenue. The money paid is debited to the Cash account, and an offsetting Payable account is credited until the product is actually delivered.

Only then is that Payable account debited and Sales credited.
