Woman claims that she was removed from an American Airlines flight because the captain was bothered by her shirt which read "If I wanted the government in my womb, I'd fuck a senator." by Andewz111in news

[–]ravend13 -12 points-11 points ago

This is absurd. If people find her shirt offensive, they are free to avert their eyes. No one is forcing them to stare.

Old Kazaa code now helps ISPs profit by changing users' data by Kraetenin cyberlaws

The easiest way they could win back customes from "the pirate operation" is to provide a similar level of service for a monthly fee. And they really need to do away with the lags on availability of content in other countries - that is probably the one place where piracy is really damagin.

New bionic eye for the totally blind by colloquyin science

This is not the first device that enables the blind to see. It is, however, the first that would implant a chip to the brain to deliver data directly.

Google filed a patent for the ability to eavesdrop on conversations, so that they can deliver better targeted advertising. Not just phone calls, either - any sound that is picked up by the headset mics. by DevestatingAttackin technology

[–]ravend13 0 points1 point ago

How does targeted advertising mean everyone (or for that matter anyone) knows what you've been saying, any more than if it was only used for improving speech recognition?

76% of Americans Want Clean Energy Instead of Nuclear, Natural Gas, & Coal by DonManuelin energy

[–]ravend13 1 point2 points ago

I'm not saying it isn't a matter of money - just that the relationship between the amount of money and the results is closer to a logarithmic one, than a linear one.

What is something that society finds repulsive/taboo/etc. that you see no problem with? (Possibly NSFW) by ruckus666in AskReddit

[–]ravend13 1 point2 points ago

This was the rationalization for prohibition of alcohol nearly a hundred years ago. We all know how that went.

Defining life as the point at which we become sentient opens the door to infanticide.

No longer? RAID of any kind was never a substitute for having backups.

The relationship between how quickly a complex problem can be solved and how much money is thrown at it is not necessarily linear.

Finnish court: open WiFi owners not responsible for copyright infringement by KAPT_Kipperin technology

[–]ravend13 2 points3 points ago

Unfortunately this isn't always true. Many red light cameras issue a ticket with only a picture of that rear plate of a car, and subsequently issue a ticket to the owner. You don't get any points on your license in that case though. And in places where they do have to get a shot of your face you can just wear a gorilla mask and say "it wasn't me!"

Google gets license to operate driverless cars in Nevada by mushpuppyin offbeat

[–]ravend13 11 points12 points ago

A combination of subsidies, tax credits, and lower insurance rates should accommodate them. Especially since Google seems to be designing their autonomous systems as a kit that could in theory be installed on existing cars, as opposed to only being available on new vehicles (at least I really hope they go this route).

Get a whizzinator and some clean piss. Clean piss can be stored in a freezer for extended periods of time. Just thaw enough of it to fill the whizzinator when needed. Problem solved.

You are being royally ripped off by your cell phone carrier by jack_alexanderin news

[–]ravend13 2 points3 points ago

Their LTE phones all do - it was a requirement requested by Google and set by the FCC for the spectrum auction, that if the end price reached $5 billion, devices on the LTE network would HAVE to use SIM cards. Google then bid $4.99 billion. Unfortunately the iPhone 4S unlock is half-assed. They'll unlock its GSM component, but only internationally. Currently there isn't a way to unlock your Verizon iPhone 4S and use it with AT&T or any other US based GSM carrier.

California student left in cell for 5 days without food or water files $20M claim against DEA by dedbodiezin news

It's a holding cell. They take you there for processing. Then they take you to jail. Trying to smuggle meth into a jail - and the jail will probably strip-search you, is a felony. So if you have meth in the holding cell, and you know you're going to jail soon, it would make sense to ditch it.
