I realize that you've already said this, but OP please actually use plenum cable.

It is not that much more expensive, and is specifically made to be fire retardant. So, if you do have a fire in your building it isn't being spread through your air ducts by the cable.

I think that it's a right of passage to shut down a critical server improperly at least once.

At least you didn't have to drive to the colo to physically push the power button. (Worth noting, if you can't power on your servers remotely, even if they aren't supposed to be turned off.. it's going to be a problem eventually.)

It might be worth noting that "Mom's Son" is arguing a different point entirely. Well, he seems to be arguing several points at once... but functionally for the sake of sanity... it might be raised that nowhere in your previous discussion does anyone debate the existence of a god.

So, fundamentally, he's taking the discussion from rather even ground right off a cliff in to a morass that no theist will budge from.

It might do all involved a service to elucidate that you are not debating the existence of a deity but merely the merits of founding a formal moral code upon any specific religion.

Also relevant: Code of Hammurabi, quite a few of the legal concepts that I'm sure he would find familiar aren't rooted in Christianity.

This is a bit underhanded, but I can only assume a continuation of his fairly narrow espoused values... it might be useful to ask him about his feelings on Sharia law. I'm sure he's either unaware or vehemently against.

Now, while it might seem unrelated to take it here, but frankly, it provides a fair amount of leverage. Specifically, our legal system isn't literally founded on Christian principles. So, to argue that point is mixing a bit of hyperbole and willful ignorance. Sharia is literally the Islamic moral and religious law. So, yea, that's a step in the right direction. It's worth noting that since they are no longer discussing their beliefs they are more likely willing to analyse them critically.

So, where does that get us? Well, once he professes his either feelings or ignorance of it, it might do some good to point out that Islam is effectively another branch in the Abrahamic religion family, as well as Jesus's role in Islam.

I'm sure that someone else in here has pointed out the biblical prohibitions on shellfish, trimming of beards, the value of women, owning slaves and the like. I just thought it might be useful to instead try to help you keep the debate on topic and potentially give you a bit of room to move.

TL;DR None of it really matters, does it? You never know how much time you have left to enjoy their company. Just enjoy the spirited discussion with your friend.

USB Storage Watch - Why aren't there more of these? by frieddimsimsin shutupandtakemymoney

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have one. The USB drive died after about 6 months. Also, it's non-detachable, so you have to either carry a USB extension cord or keep taking your watch off to use it.

This one (also from Thinkgeek) has a removable hidden USB drive. http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/a8bc/

However, is it really that hard to carry a thumbdrive? For $40 I picked up a 32 gb USB 3.0 drive from Newegg.

Alright, seriously, do you know who gets to pick whether or not a word has multiple meanings? The answer is 'not you.'

There are in fact formal bodies that define words.. and they put these defintions in to a book. They call these magical things dictionaries.

Oh, here's a dictionary now. The definition of Retarded. Look, it's got two definitions for it! I guess we'll all have to agree there are two meanings... oh wait... they both pertain to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Oh, we'll use the slang definition... oh wait. Same thing. I'm actually going to quote the slang definition for you, as you were the one to bring it up.

n. a rude nickname for a retarded person. (Derogatory and unkind.)

It explicitly states that it's a derogatory term towards people with ID. So, where does that leave us?

Right, short history lesson. Idiot, Imbecile and Moron were clinical terms once upon a time. Lay people started using them as epithets, and they ceased being suitable for use in a clinical setting. So, retard was introduced to free discussions from that stigma.

So, now, let's take it back from the top. You are using a clearly denigratory word, which even in your own defense you've cited as being an insult. You simply claim you can define it in a manner that separates it from people with intellectual disabilities? Right?

However, you cannot. That word wouldn't exist in it's current usage if it weren't coined to refer to people with ID. People who have any form of ID, no matter how mild have been described using that word since they were born. You can't simply say, "No, I wasn't talking about you." The word retarded has followed them their entire lives.

In a few decades, when it's been fully replaced... you can have it back. Just like you can have idiot, imbecile and moron. However, for now, it's not your word to take. It's theirs... and it hurts.

Your best bet would be to go expose yourself to some culture. Read a book.. watch some movies. Find something to inspire yourself.

Here's one that I've wanted to use but never gotten around to it.
