Minister considering broadcasting charge 'whether you have a TV or not' | BreakingNews.ie by bettlebroxin ireland

[–]raffraffraff 5 points6 points ago

All benefits of public broadcast are superceded by the Internet, which is one hundred times more important. And if you don't believe anyone that says they never watch RTE or access their online content, then I say that you are mistaken.

Surely they can reduce the original fee, if everybody has to pay, and investigators and litigation are no longer required? Of course not. That would be too rational.

I have no children to educate, don't mistreat my body enough to suffer from a costly avoidable disease, don't avail of social welfare, don't like modern art and don't have a TV. But my salary will be garnished to pay for all of these things anyway.

I do believe in taxation. Even though I don't want children, I also don't want to live in a society that fails to provide free education or provide medical and financial help to those that need it. The benefits far outweigh the costs. But I never want to see my wages pay for TV broadcasting or modern art, because they are pointless and should either be able to fund themselves - or cease to exist. As somebody already pointed out, RTE have the licence fee and advertising. If they can't survive on that, they should downsize and lose the overpaid managers.

And I'll be damned if I'll pay for a TV I don't own.

The last two months I have not been able to stop eating tomatoe and avocado sandwiches on toast with cheddar and mayo. At least one every day, if not more. What's your favourite quick veggie sandwich / snack that you can't stop eating? by XLIIin veg

[–]raffraffraff 1 point2 points ago

I agree with the limited circumstances, but this is certainly one of them as far as I'm concerned. However, I'd gladly swap it for a camembert. Not that there's much difference between the two, but camembert is less.... diapery(?)

Avocado plus lemon equals banana. Ruins it for me. Avocado was made to go with brie, jalapeno and roasted pepper, on a whole wheat roll.

Security companies that support SOPA: McAfee, Kaspersky, and Symantec. Any others? by TheGoddamBatmanin netsec

I clicked on the comments to make this point, more our less. I haven't had chance to analyse this, but since The Internet isn't just used in the US, and this law will be, wont this just hurt the your economy? My worry is how the rest of the world will deal with US companies if there's a risk of either party getting their DNS poisoned or IP blocked by SOPA . My guess is that you will see a surge in proxy services outside the state that provide encrypted access to 'undesirable' services. For a fee, eventually. Like DRM, the collateral damage from SOPA will be huge.

New metal is 100 times lighter than Styrofoam by coldbrookin technology

[–]raffraffraff 4 points5 points ago

I was trying to figure out what '100 times lighter than...' means. You can measure an object's weight and get a value. Another object can be a multiple of its weight (and therefore heavier by an order of magnitude). Asking 'how light is that carbon fiber bicycle' is the equivalent to asking how heavy it is. Asking how much lighter than the steel bicycle should get you a measurement of the difference, in the same unit of measurement. If there's an order of magnitude in the difference, surely its better to communicate comparitive 'lightness' as a fraction or a percentage, rather than as a multiple.

Anyway, isn't density the key attribute here, since we're not given the dimensions of either material?

These bus stop notification devices are pointless. by raffraffraffin ireland

Update: Anybody that thinks these things work must use a reliable bus route that tended to mirror its actual timetable. The photo I uploaded needs a bit of background:

The top two slots were showing 1min, 3min, 2min alternately for about 10 minutes. There were no traffic problems that morning, with a constant stream of traffic coming from the Ballyfermot direction. And the 68 that actually turned up wasn't listed at all.
