I'm not getting over it: a reflection on rape culture by honorificain Feminism

[–]rachelwalexander 6 points7 points ago

Part of my point in writing this was trying to reconcile my knowledge of what I "should" be doing--speaking up in uncomfortable situations, for example--and how I actually live my life. It's something I struggle with every day, and based on the conversations I've had with other women about this, I don't think I'm alone in that regard.

Dear /r/Feminisms, what books and other reading do you recommend? by TheSilentNumberin feminisms

I would highly recommend Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape, edited by Jessica Valenti and Jaclyn Friedman. While not a "classic", it comes at feminism from the angle of sex, relationships and a bunch of other stuff women can relate to, and it does an amazing job of tying a ton of issues together: body image, rape culture, sex education, fat acceptance, etc.

While we are focusing on SOPA, we are being distracted from the Senate version of the bill: the PROTECT IP Act. by Anon_is_a_Memein politics

Personally, I've been using SOPA as shorthand for both the House and Senate versions...

You're not wrong. The German government has committed a decent chunk of that, if I'm remembering correctly.

I'm thinking of starting a self-sufficiency program for teenagers which is similar to the boy scouts wilderness survival class. by Jayshwain SelfSufficiency

If you haven't already, I would check out Tom Brown Jr.'s tracking school, which is based in New Jersey, as well as Wilderness Awareness School in Duvall, WA. I've done a lot of programs with them--they focus on primitive skills, tracking, plant identification and the like, and have programs for children and adults--and I've learned a ton of useful stuff. Their Kamana Naturalist Training program is designed for home study, and they have a really nice list of good field guides and other resources. Their website is: http://wildernessawareness.org/
