Will a ball thrown against the rotation of the Earth travel farther? by Date_Knightin askscience

[–]quraid 6 points7 points ago

the next time you are traveling in a bus, train or plane, just do a little hop against the direction of travel. Do you think the direction/speed of the bus/train/plane added to the distance you hopped? nope. its because being in the bus, you inherit the velocity of the bus. Similarly a ball on the surface of the earth inherits the angular velocity at that point on the Earth's circumference. If you throw it with or against the spin of the Earth, no extra velocity is added or removed as before it was thrown, the ball had a relative velocity of 0 wrt to the point on Earth.

btw, someone posted about sunscreen. Can't stress that enough. One of my client got terribly sun burnt in just a couple of days. We can handle our sun better as we have more melamine in our skin. you may need the extra help.

I'm an American Male age 24 finishing up my undergrad by doing an internship in New Delhi. I just found out in the last two weeks and I leave in roughly a month. What did I get myself into?

A smelly, hot and dirty place. you will see the most heartbreaking things on the streets and in a month you will learn to disregard them as just part of the scenery. Your white skin will make people treat you like a royal and charge you just as much. Its a common assumption that all white skinned foreigners are millionaires. If you are black, no such luck. Don't go splurging on food just anywhere. Its difficult for Americans (moreso for Europeans) to adjust to our food. Expect lots of stomach issues in the beginning. Try to stick to the bigger restaurant chains. Their food is generally less spicy. In time you will learn to love the food. If not, no worries. tons of outlets in Delhi which have food from all over the world.

I like to be very active, I especially enjoy doing outdoor activities, any recommendations?

Join some meetup groups in and around delhi. Join backpacking groups/coffee groups and you will soon find friends and social activities to partake in.

I also am interested in the nightlife in New Delhi. Essentially any advice that you can give me that I wouldn't get from a typical guidebook would be awesome.

Not much about nightlife if you don't have a female friend. You can try the discotheques in Ambience and other big name malls. Stag entry is pricey but allowed in most places. Most people don't pick up women at bars. its just not in the culture here. Either you come with females to dance or you can pay some of the bar girls to dance with you. expect Rs.500 or more for 10 mins of grinding on the dance floor. Again, if you are white, it will be easy for you to pick up girls.

Last questions: Is the energy drink RedBull available?

yep. and i can't understand why. noone i know can stand it.

Few more pointers.

language shouldn't be any problem here. Most people who look like they can afford a car, can understand and speak english.

for the 1st month, try not to go out alone. have your escort/local friend show you around. you will get fleeced.

if you are a girl, don't move around alone late in the night. Sorry to say but Delhi is not a safe place for females.

If you want to grab a beer with a fellow redditor sometime, drop me a pm

What would the night sky look like if the speed of light was instantaneous? by sunchaosin Astronomy

[–]quraid 0 points1 point ago

i halff-agree that. All that we are seeing in the night sky is at least 4 light years old. if light were to be instantaneous, many of the distant stars may reveal themselves to be burnt out husks while brand new infant suns will arise in the skies. the night sky may be somewhat different. However, the nearer the source of light is to us, the more likely it is to be similar to what it still is. Since most of what we see in the sky is within a few million light years of us at max (just a guess), it will still look quite similar as a few million shouldn't change a stars look by much.
