We just finished the first Norwegian Formula Student car! Startup video in comments. by magnusfbin Autos

I was at the University at Buffalo. We had one really good year in '08 before the team feel apart again due to graduating leadership and budget cuts. Still a great experience. Its amazing how much you learn in the process.

Congrats. Even though I may not speak of word of Norwegian, as former FSAE member I know exactly what you were saying and how you feel. The first time the car starts up is always an amazing feeling. Good luck at competition!

must have hit pretty hard. anyone else notice the buckling in the roof?

My grandfather gave me this in the 70's. It doesn't work any more. Any ideas how I could get it fixed? (Pic of inside in the comments.) by dacracotin gadgets

[–]pyroman8813 0 points1 point ago

Any information on WHAT doesn't work? beep41 told you to try putting a battery in it to which you responded rather sarcastically. Should we assume that means that you tried that and it still didn't work? if so describe what happened. Did it just produce static? did you try messing around with the settings? was it completely silent?

The caps SEEM to be ok from the picture as i don't see any bulging but it can be hard to tell.

have you tried testing anything with a meter to make sure its getting power? I see cob webs in there so its obvious that it has been sitting for a while. For all I know it could just be some dirty contacts.

Without more information we cant help you. So I would advise that if you want people to help to help you, you should answer their questions politely rather than attacking them.

My Manual transmission... by conepuncher420in Cartalk

eh, you can find them cheaper. I wouldn't trust it to be the most accurate for racing conditions, but I'd imagine for the OP's needs it would probably work well enough.

My Manual transmission... by conepuncher420in Cartalk

[–]pyroman8813 3 points4 points ago

For the most part, you can get by shifting "on the 10s" ie 1-2 at 10 mph, 2-3 at 20 mph, 3-4 at 30 4-5 at 40... This tends to be on the conservative side for shift points and I wouldn't really shift much earlier than that. Since you mentioned km/h, every 15-20 kph should work.

Mind you these are just rules of thumb and you might have to tweak these values a bit but it should get you in the right ballpark. There is the method of finding out the gear ratios and calculating the rpm manually.

Other than that, just play it by ear. Most of the time you should have no problem being able to know when to shift just by listening to how the engine sounds.

Ha, go figure. I just finished up writing my presentation that I will be giving tomorrow on a msp430 based wireless web configurable thermostat. Kind of cool to see that I'm not the only one who thinks this is a good idea.

What did nerds do in 1940? Check out the Radio Shack catalogs from way back. by MrUnappropriatein DIY

[–]pyroman8813 4 points5 points ago

The only thing a trip to radio shack has every amounted to for me was a waste of gas. The could of draws of over priced drawers in the back almost never has even close to what I need.

It's a shame too because most of the time I would much rather be able to run out to the store quick and pick up a few misc parts even if there was a small price premium than have to wait several days for the stuff to get shipped.

How good at math do you have to be for engineering? by neonnonagonin engineering

[–]pyroman8813 0 points1 point ago

When ever I make a math error people will call me out on it saying I though you were an engineer and were supposed to be good at math. My standard response is that I can't do math with numbers. I can only do it with letters.

Why don't young Americans buy cars? by kmmokaiin TrueReddit

[–]pyroman8813 0 points1 point ago*

It depends on where you live. I also have a 2012 elantra which comes out to be around 200ish a month for insurance. For back ground I am 23 from LI with a clean driving record and tied into my dad's insurance who hasn't had to make a claim on one of his cars since before I was born. Unfortunately there isn't much I can really do as I need to car to get to school and commute back and forth to work.

Must be a pretty good gas leak by KDFiercein UBreddit

[–]pyroman8813 2 points3 points ago

A friend of mine was the one who called it in (also a redditor). Basically he said he wasn't quite sure what it was but his best guess i that it was mace or the likes. He said when he walked into the area (don't remember where or even if he actually told me where) his eye started tearing and he almost gagged on the smell.

Don't really know too much more than that although I supposed I can ask him.

Replacing battery on MKV (2008) Jetta? by soritongin Cartalk

[–]pyroman8813 0 points1 point ago

mkIII jettas had a small clamp on the left/inboard side with a single 13mm (if my memory serves me correctly) bolt holding the battery down. I would imagine that there is a good chance that never models have a similar setup.

armed robbery in spaulding quad by stillxxenchantedin UBreddit

[–]pyroman8813 2 points3 points ago

North campus is really rare. Occasionally you will hear about "attempted purse snatching" in a parking lot on north but the majority of the "incidents" will be somewhere off of south campus near the frats.

I live off campus and will frequently have to walk home late at night alone and have never had an issue. The key thing is to maintain awareness of your surroundings and to generally not be stupid.

Living on campus in the dorms there you shouldn't really have anything to worry about. Again though, just be smart.

If you want here (warning PDF) is the statistics for the past few years.

Something seems weird about this one. If I was going to pick a place to rob Elliott would probably be the last place I pick. Way too impractical with way too many people around, too dificult of a getaway and too small of a potential gain. In particular planning to go for cash? I rarely have more than $20-40 in cash on me. Considering most freshman living in the dorms will be on meal plans most of them wont have too much cash either.

Whats wrong with it? Usually with that type of stuff 90% + of the stuff can be taken apart with just a #1 or #0 Philips screw driver. There's no real point in spending that much money for the type of cheap tools you linked to in those kits.

TIL the average human male can survive 51 days without the intake of calories. (Also, to calculate how many days you can survive) by Cloud6221in todayilearned

[–]pyroman8813 0 points1 point ago

Well based on the procedure they suggested, I have about 10k worth of reserve Calories. As a base line without doing any major physical activity, I need to eat about 3-4k Calories a day to maintain my weight. If I am very active during the day ie I spend the day hiking that number can increase quite dramatically.

Even assuming I use my baseline of 3k Calories that is still only good for about 3 days worth of sitting around.
