What can be done with an old desktop? Purpose-wise. by JBatallionin linuxquestions

[–]puffybaba 0 points1 point ago

one thing that helps is installing a text browser like w3m or elinks or lynx, so that when you need to look something up, you can go to google or duckduckgo or startpage or whatever it is the cool people use these days.

Here's a function you can use for making a quick google search (put this in your ~/.bashrc or whatever)

google()
  w3m google.com/search?q="$(quote "$@")"

How to add users to the sudoers list? by MollyCyrusin linuxquestions

[–]puffybaba 0 points1 point ago

It depends on how you have sudo set up. Open up the sudoers file with visudo (this requires root or sudo access), and there should be a line like this:

%sudo ALL=(ALL) ALL

if not sudo, then it might say wheel, or maybe something else, like admin. This is the group that has sudo access. To add another user to this group, edit /etc/group, and add the user to that group.

“We invested in [DuckDuckGo] because there is a need for a private search engine. We did it for the Internet anarchists, people that hang out on Reddit and Hacker News.” - VC Fred Wilson by amartzin technology

Note also, you can go to the settings link in duckduckgo, change them however you want (maybe disable safe search, change the color theme, etc), then click on "bookmarklets and settings data" and copy that url.

When you are promoting your subreddit, you should link to it, preferably in the title, but if not, then in the text.

[–]puffybaba 0 points1 point ago

4th generation ipod,40 GB:

  • Works very well with linux through gtkpod, etc

  • fully supported by rockbox

  • sound quality is great

  • 40GB is a decent amount of storage

  • the drive can be swapped out for an even bigger one

  • by buying used, you are not feeding the Apple monster.

Making a linux laptop grandparent proof? by clienthaxin linux

For the remote access part of this, I recommend some kind of dynamic DNS service, like no-ip; it just makes everything way easier. Set this up on the router, so that the locally assigned ip of the computer doesn't matter.

US “Six Strikes” Anti-Piracy Scheme Delayed: "After 6 warnings ISPs may take some repressive measures, including slowing down offenders’ connections and temporary disconnections." by maxwellhillin technology

[–]puffybaba 0 points1 point ago

A VPN is a service which allows you to route your internet traffic (web browsing, email, instant messaging, etc) over an encrypted connection to some server somewhere else. Server logs will then record the IP of this VPN server, rather than the IP address your ISP assigned you. Additionally, servers in between your computer and the VPN - which includes your ISP - will not be able to read your traffic, since it's encrypted.

Since using VPN requires an internet connection, it does not replace your ISP. Instead, it's just a fancy way of hiding what you are doing from your ISP and hiding your IP from sites you visit.

I recommend ipredator.se, and I recommend avoiding a VPN based in the US - what's the point, when the whole reason US folks want to use a VPN is because of how messed up the US political system is.

That would seem true. However, the calories you burn in exercising are not the source of weight loss: if that were true, you would have to run hundred mile marathons to lose any appreciable weight. Instead, what happens is, when you've been exercising for awhile, your body's resting metabolic rate changes, and you continue to benefit from your exercise when you are sitting in your chair browsing reddit.
