TIL Queen's "We Are The Champions" is scientifically proven to be the catchiest song ever by Ibby238in todayilearned

[–]postdarwin 4 points5 points ago

I was puzzled by that too and immediately dismissed it. But then I thought of that recent mega-catchy song by Gotye. It has long and detailed phrases over multiple pitch changes by a male singer making a noticeable effort. And I thought, damn maybe they're on to something.

but you didn't have to cut me off...

Uplink communications is via S band (16-bit/s command rate) while an X band transmitter provides downlink telemetry at 160 bit/s normally and 1.4 kbit/s for playback of high-rate plasma wave data. All data is transmitted from and received at the spacecraft via the 3.7m high-gain antenna.

A lot of file sharing sites are similar. Having said that, there is a blue 'Download Now' (Free members download) button on the lower right -- then you wait 30 seconds and continue to the video. I have ad-block installed so I'm not sure what else you're seeing.

Of course torrenting is a slower but less painful to watch these.

Well, I thought my original comment was reasonable enough -- I certainly didn't think it would be characterised as 'marching', 'barging', and 'whining'; you were the one trying to demean my statements by using LOLspeak 'what about the menz'. It seems like you are the one who barges in to tell me what I 'get to say' and 'don't get to say'.

Having said that, I wish I lived in your internet, if my comment is your standard for 'offensive'.

It's not like I mentioned Rampart.

Let's just leave it at that. I'm sure you have better things to do.

Maybe I should have just complained about being downvoted due to 'social silencing'. Worked for the top commenter.

I was hoping for a more balanced discussion about why some people behave atrociously towards others, and what we might be able to do about it in the future. Is it genetic and innate, and therefore inescapable? Perhaps it's biochemical? Or simply environmental conditioning? Wither the human condition?

That sort of thing, rather than 'men treat women badly -- here are some examples'.

Since you're in charge of telling we what I 'get to say', I wonder if we replaced 'men' with 'negroes' in this discussion, would I be allowed to ask commenters not to make this about people's race?

I was just quoting SRS. They claim almost everyone is 'invalidating her experience' simply by offering their own. And the phrase 'the disposable sex' comes from the subtitle of Farrell's book The Myth of Male Power.

As I mentioned in my comment, I agree with everything the OP said, but I was concerned that her comment could used to provoke a blanket attack on men in general -- which was happening in the later comments.

But if you really think that 'First: this is not about men' I'm afraid you must have been reading a different post.

The thread that I read was titled 'To the guys' and the comment to which I responded was regarding 'a million interactions with men over a lifetime - men who go too far', in which, over the course of a few paragraphs, the commenter mentions the words 'boys', 'men', or 'guys' 22 times.

I don't disagree with anything the OP says in her post. It sounds like a reasonable catalogue of the harassment she's experienced over a number of years -- probably common to many women.

The only thing I would add to this discussion is that during my younger years, like the OP, I also experienced plenty of physical and emotional harassment from exactly the same kind of jerks. They exist everywhere in all countries, in every era. The only difference is that I am a man.

Going through puberty as a young male you are guaranteed to be teased, insulted, bullied, hated, humiliated, and de-humanised. You are also guaranteed to be beaten up many, many times -- sometimes while protecting women. (This will continue later in life if you live in a 'disadvantaged' neighbourhood, most likely surrounded by ill-educated thugs who operate on primal instinct alone.)

Society has deemed it acceptable to treat the 'disposable' sex in this manner in order to 'make men' of us. Similar techniques are used by the military to destroy and rebuild the psyche of its recruits.

I would caution people against making this into some kind of male/female debate. There are simply aggressors and their targets, and I'd also remind you that while it's certain that men are most commonly the culprits, you'll find they are also overwhelmingly the victims (in about an 80/20 split) of acts of violence and murder.

Luckily I am now 6'2" and +200lbs so I get left alone mostly.

Edit: I see this has been added to SRS -- thus MY EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN INVALIDATED (I should have added sarcasm tags to the caps lock phrase).

Also, I'm somewhat amused by the downvotes when I see that the top voted comment on this page suggests the OP is:

carefully detailing a complex life of escalating harassment that teaches women over their entire lives to be wary of STRANGERS that are men. It gives a history on why many women have been socialized to distrust strangers...adult American woman have experienced all of these things.

Closely echoing my remark that it was 'a reasonable catalogue of the harassment she's experienced over a number of years -- probably common to many women.'

And then:

"There is too much confusion that suggests a sheer failure at reading comprehension (Wha? She said all men are rapists?)."

Which exactly mirrors my note of caution regarding 'people making this into some kind of male/female debate.' The commenter goes on to talk about

My first instance of sexual harassment was at age 8 when...

Adding her personal recollections, just as I did. It seems the only thing I did differently was discuss another gender.

Mythbusters S10E09 'Mailbag Special' [Streamline EDIT] by postdarwinin smyths

[–]postdarwin[S] 6 points7 points ago

This one is all Tory, Grant, and Kari.

Because of the nature of the show there's a hell of a lot of flashbacks to earlier myths. I tried to remove any filler material ('Yes folks, the Mythbusters love blowing things up' -- cue a bunch of random explosions) and keep only the relevant footage. The result may be choppier than usual. If you really enjoy scattergun-style reminiscence over past episodes, watch the original.

Also, I kept the quiz show unchanged, since it's something a little different to the norm -- actually, I kinda wish they showed the whole thing, for the real fans.

About that storm, it turned out that the last pilot available to fly Spielberg out was the guy with the snake in the cockpit who picks up Indy in the opening scene of Raiders. I'm sure he was the inspiration for Ford's character in Six Days Seven Nights.
