TripAdvisor Strategy: No Architects, Engineers Work Across the Entire Stack by paran0idein programming

[–]pointy 8 points9 points ago

This has been the case with startups I've worked at over the past couple decades. In fact I believe my most recent checkin involved SQL, Java, CSS, HTML (well JSP), and JavaScript sources. Oh, and I forgot to check in the SVG file (Inkscape) with some art in it :-)

Why, Google? by vuxanovin Design

I think the "M" (mail) icon is 3D, not 2D, and that's why there's a shadow: the flap of the envelope protruders directly out of the screen a little, shading the lower right corner of the envelope.

Not bad but I'm not exactly "amazed". Also those little things don't really do anything useful. It would be somewhat more interesting if the design used those focus-based actions to reveal/hide particulars about requirements for the field contents

Does nobody care anymore about tech articles being written in at least halfway-decent prose? I appreciate that the author's first language is (very probably) not English, but it's an English-language site.

As a cop that worked the May Day protests (and many others) I have the following recommendations: by CopThoughtin politics

[–]pointy 2 points3 points ago

Why should downtrodden people protesting the fucked-up state of affairs have to come up with a plan to fix everything? This "But what do they want?" meme is seriously wrong-headed; we're talking about the poor powerless people — how in the world are they supposed to come up with a plan to fix everything? Maybe the people own everything and control everything should hold up their end of the bargain.

Thank you, r/design, for teaching me about "lorem ipsum"; that knowledge just helped me identify a site (where I was just about to spend money) as a likely scam...not that there weren't other clues.. by fiepiein Design

If you were seriously thinking of spending money there, well, I hope you have a lot of spare money.

Surely if it's going to all that trouble it could determine that the potential numbers are not accurately representable after conversion to floating point.

I've discovered that the small company that I work for is pirating pretty much every piece of software they use. Wat do? by Fizzbitin Design

It's not blackmail, it's the simple truth. The employee here has his own job security to think about.

Yes that's great right up until the law shows up and the owner tells them it's all the fault of the employees.

TIL data stolen from American computers primarily by the Chinese goverment has been described as “the greatest transfer of wealth in history" by MediocreJerkin technology

[–]pointy 0 points1 point ago

Maybe if American companies would start to understand how to tell a good web implementation from a bad one, would stop hiring incompetent boobs to develop their web properties based on specifications invented by bubble-heads with absolutely no understanding of web technologies or even web idioms, and would stop thinking about web applications as incidental afterthoughts peripheral to their primary business, problems like this would start to fade, as the utterly mundane precautions necessary to ward off virtually all mundane hack attacks would be built into commercial systems as a matter of course.
