This web resizing tool will save you 500 hours this year. by kisschickenin Design

[–]pointy 0 points1 point ago

The Preferences Toolbar for Firefox has a configurable "Resize" option.

There's also the gadget on the lower-right of the browser window that'll let you resize to whatever size you like :-)

Instead of making people retype or copypaste their email address on web forms, why don't they just have an "I'm not retarded" checkbox to indicate that I know how provide my email address accurately? by SmellsLikeUpfooin web_design

[–]pointy 1 point2 points ago

I think it's better to just keep track of whether you've confirmed that the user does in fact receive and read mail at the given address, and remind them to confirm it until it's confirmed. You can even withhold some functionality until it's confirmed.

Knowing that two entries of an alleged email address are the same does not assure your ability to contact somebody.

Futuristic Navy railgun with 220 mile range closer to reality by hasai185in technology

[–]pointy 9 points10 points ago

The article says the projectile is accelerated to Mach 0.75, which is considerably less than 1000 ft/sec. That doesn't seem like a very high-velocity projectile to me. The Abrams main gun has a muzzle velocity of well over 5 times that, for example.

Is there reason for using both ID and classes when styling a website? by embryoin web_design

[–]pointy 7 points8 points ago

I do not agree with this, at least not as a universal rule. There are performance considerations with CSS just like there are with JavaScript. If there's an element on a page that's naturally unique and of significance for page styling, using an id is appropriate.

How do I convince my CEO that better design = better conversion = more revenue? by geoman2kin Design

[–]pointy 1 point2 points ago

Seriously, doing some cheap simple user testing (see Krug's book on the topic) tells you so much about your site that it can't really be overstated. It's simply amazing how much insight you get into how people interpret the things you've put on the screen. If you've never done it, then odds are that anything you think you know about how people respond to a design is almost certanly wrong.

The stylesheet for that blog makes it look absolutely terrible for me; the font is not anti-aliased so it's painful to read (which, therefore, I didn't).

Best Buy and Energizer engage in consumer fraud by TheSummarizerin gadgets

[–]pointy 0 points1 point ago

If you buy something like that at Target (Target!) and don't like it, you take it back, packaged or not, and say "This didn't work", and you get your money back with no conversation involved at all.

Don't shop at Best Buy, in other words.

[–]pointy 2 points3 points ago

Just a minor irrelevant nit, but Erlang sort-of does have macros. The macro system could generously be called "obtuse", but I would definitely characterize it as a real macro system. (The facility is called the "parse transform", and it involves the parser handing over the AST of a module — as an Erlang data structure — to some other Erlang code you supply, and your code returns the modified AST. Or something like that; I'm a dilettante Erlang programmer at best.)

Client wants to use this as background for his site. Any idea? by hellocrowleyin Design

It's pretty sad that I know fairly accurately where on the edge of the set that probably comes from. (It's from pretty far down in the "notch" between the main big "butt" form and the first quasi-circle blob to its left; the best spirals like this are down there, either side of the x axis of course.)
