I believe one method is to secretly place a sticker on the subject where it can only be easily seen by looking into a mirror. If the subject looks in the mirror and proceeds to remove the sticker from itself, then it recognizes itself in its reflection.

Well, you can open your save file in an editor, or use this to recreate them as accurately as possible, and maybe fudge the level (the last two digits in the code minus 2) if they're higher than 61.
