"Is pimping easy?"

"Well as Big Daddy Kane would say, pimping is not easy"

"That is correct!"

"Is pimping easy?"

".... Hell yea it is."

"Somehow that is also correct!"

No, the best solution is to slowly heat the glass to around 500-600F, so that it expands and the cat can slide out easily.

Engineers of Reddit, What are some good engineering resources? by KungFuPokachu14in engineering

Not sure how useful it will be in school (as OP mentioned), but I agree that every engineer should have one upon walking into their first real job.

Given that they're probably making about 20 times my salary, and they don't even have to be good at what they do? Fuck yes.

Everclear: because maybe you need to get drunk and sterilize medical equipment at the same time.

This is why I come to Reddit...for the high caliber insightful commentary. Tell us, oh modern day Socrates, what is your position on how government regulation of the internet is poised to kill the same free speech it intends to protect?

This. Blame the networks and ratings agencies for failing to keep up with the times. Their outdated metrics don't take into account how Conan's target demographic (young people) watches TV (online streaming, mobile, or time-shifted with DVR).

Maybe Jay could have made a public statement in Conan's defense, but based on what I read, his hands were contractually tied.

If you make your pick, and lump the remaining doors together, him opening the doors basically makes switching the equivalent of giving you an initial pick of 999,999 doors.

So if you switch, your odds go from 1:1,000,000 to 999,999:1,000,000.

What could possibly go wrong? by Jid11in funny

[–]pime 0 points1 point ago

I remember seeing some kids do something similar in my neighborhood back in high school. They had a truck, and a trashcan lid pulled behind it with a rope. The roads were completely iced over, so they took turns going up and down the street being pulled behind the truck.

Then one of the kids lost control and got slung into a brick mailbox at about 20 mph. Took him a few minutes to stand up.

Cashiers of Reddit, what is something that customers do, while you are ringing them up or checking them out, that pisses you off? by carbon107in AskReddit

[–]pime 0 points1 point ago

When I was a cashier, I always made it very obvious that I was waiting for the person to hang up their phone before I started ringing their shit up.

The other people behind them in line would always get mad at the woman on the phone instead of me, and they'd usually sort it out for me pretty quickly. Absolves me of any culpability, and I still get to see an inconsiderate bitch get told.

Website that has a lot of MIL reference standards by aeroalexin MechanicalEngineering

[–]pime 0 points1 point ago

Nice resource. The MIL handbooks can be a great asset, especially the materials references.

It looks like this isn't close to a comprehensive list, and some of these may be out of date. For example, we use MIL-STD-810 literally every day, and it's been superseded by Rev G. Some of the others, like Human Factors Engineering (I think is the name) are very useful with guidelines on how to make your designs easier to use by actual humans.

As most people will tell you, it's very difficult to judge how good 47k is without knowing where you'll be living. If it's in Silicon Valley you'll never pay your rent. Around here in Texas, a good starting salary for ME's (not Engineering Technology mind you, Mechanical Engineering) is around 60k, plus some relocation bonus. For an offer like that in any of the surrounding cities (Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio) 47k is definitely a low-ball and both parties know it.

ASME offers some salary statistics (broken down by job responsibilities and location) so you can get a feel for how your salary compares to your peers. You can also contact the ME department at your university, who often keeps similar data. If you plan to negotiate, you'd better come in with some data to back up your argument. Show them "according to these surveys, this salary would put me in the lowest 5% of engineers in the tri-state area, and I know that my skills should be worth than that" rather than "uhh I want some more money".

Let us know how it goes!

What trivial act would you like to ban or make illegal? Personally, I would like to outlaw public speakers who start off by saying, "I can't hear you!" or "Let's try that again!" by danger_mcboomin AskReddit

[–]pime 10 points11 points ago

I was waiting in line behind some asshole who finished ringing up his 10 groceries. He then proceeded to pick up the sheet that lists all of the produce codes, read it for 2-3 minutes, put it back down, and then PAY FOR HIS FUCKING GROCERIES, NONE OF WHICH WERE PRODUCE.

What the hell? "Oh, you know I've always been wondering what different kinds of lettuce they have. Now's probably a good time to check, even though this sheet tells me absolutely nothing useful about the produce in question."

If you actually track prices over time (which most Americans obviously do not), you'll notice that aside from a couple of exceptions, Black Friday sales really aren't anything special. They may sell 3 TV's at cost, and then everything else is the equivalent of a generic "get product off the shelf" store.

But "OMG YOU KNOW ITS BLACK FRIDAY SHITS GONNA BE GOOD", and they market the hell out of it, so you believe that everything is actually an amazing deal that's worth waking up at 2AM and trampling your neighbors over.

Some places (usually smaller type operations) have shitty menus. I've been to places where there was a long line and we all looked at each other and said: "You know, this line would probably be faster if any of us could read the fucking menu."

We do this for really complicated parts, such as secondary machined castings. Similarly, having the top level assembly structured in assembly order so you can step through the process.

General tips for designing parts/components by pimein MechanicalEngineering

It took a while to learn what machines and shops were capable of hitting what tolerances and how difficult it was. I wish we learned more about tolerances and what was practical/reasonable in school. A reference point of how hard it is to hold +/- 001 between two holes, or across two flats, or between setups, etc.
