Alright guys, this is it: if Obama signs NDAA where do we go from there? by fieldsofgreenin politics

[–]phlipski 0 points1 point ago

I kind of had this same discussion with my wife last night. This country is really starting to become depressing and scary. I'll add more fuel to the fire. Recently I learned the Patriot act has been used in 10 terrorism cases and some 1600+ drug cases. MF global loots some customer accounts, and all the ex-ceo (Corzine) has to say is, "I don't know where the money is." Why isn't our government putting a freeze on HIS bank accounts until the money is found? As time goes by I continue to get this feeling that there is no leadership with the guts to do what is right - and by right I mean simply enforcing exisiting rules of law like not stealing from people, or following the constitution.

Plenty of US banks do the same thing - they just don't have names like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, or Citibank. It's sad that more people haven't already pulled their money from any bank that took a bailout. There are PLENTY of options and the internet can help you find one.

I was one of the lucky ones that got a job after graduation. So every Sunday, we make dinner for my friends that weren't so lucky or that are still in school. For all the prosperous hippies out there, I encourage you to do the same - host a Sunday Dinner for your friends in need. by theseamusjamesin pics

There has been gallons of ink already spilled on this subject you've hinted at - which is that the whole idea of "graduating from college = ticket to the middle class" is over. I truly feel sorry for anyone who bought into the idea because I feel as if they were sold a bill of goods. That said, after the economy we've had for the past 10 years I'm surprised the college dream hasn't died a quicker death.

Obama gives in to GOP and drops Elizabeth Warren for the new consumer bureau. The Banks win, the People lose. by GonzoVeritasin politics

How about instead of "Obama gives in to GOP." You simply state the truth, and write a headline that says something like, "Obama does what his campaign donors (the bankers) wanted and dropped Elizabeth Warren for consumer bureau?" You could even ad something like, "Of course if anyone has paid attention to his presidency this is nothing new..."

President Obama on the fraud that is Paul Ryan: "This is the same guy that voted for two wars that were unpaid for, voted for the Bush tax cuts that were unpaid for, voted for the prescription drug bill that cost as much as my health care bill -- but wasn't paid for." by wang-bangerin politics

Here's my problem with this line of argument. Basically no one save for Ron Paul could ever cut anything right now. We basically have to throw everyone out (which I'm in favor of) and elect completely fresh faces to get a budget cut. That's not leadership, and is a cheap and weak argument from Obama.

As long as everyone who "wants change" FEARS voting for a third party candidate will just hand the election to the guy they don't want then they'll never get change. You want a third party? Stop living in fear and vote for a third party. End of debate. Otherwise STFU.

Holy shit: Michigan quietly passes bill giving new Republican governor power to do anything in the name of economic stability: Void contracts, void collective bargaining agreements, dissolve town councils and school boards, fire elected officials, unincorporate towns, sell public property by mepperin politics

It seems like this is a bill who's a bit late to the party. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but hasn't Michigan's economy been in the shitter for pretty much a decade now?

"But Americans are idiots - they think because they elect a President that he is both able to do and responsible for everything."

Most presidential candidates campaign on that! So to blame the people for basically believing the crap these politicians spout is to me a bit disingenuous. The politicians who knowingly promise to do more than they can should be held to some account.

During my bachelor years I cut the cable tv, and found myself with tons of free time. I still can't convince my wife to cut the cable but I've found she watches a whole lot less TV when I won't watch it with her. :)

Sixty-one percent of Americans said that increasing taxes to the wealthy should be the first step toward balancing the budget by wang-bangerin politics

[–]phlipski -1 points0 points ago

I'd support raising taxes on the rich (and others) IF I thought for a second that our current elected officials could actually pass a balanced budget (I'm not even looking for a budget surplus which is what we really need to start paying debt down.). Sadly the last 70 years of history have proven to me that they are not capable of much more then always spending a little more of of the tax payers money then they've got. When only 12 out of 70 years have budget surpluses the odds aren't great. Maybe the US government should lead by example - give me a balanced budget FIRST, then raise my taxes to pay off past debt.

You should be able to find a ceramic heat element Hakko for around $50 - check Fry's. They're pretty basic good quality irons to get started with. You may want to find a stand as well, but that's optional. The tips are replaceable, and this thing should last you a lifetime.

I was having a similar discussion with some friends last night. I said, "This whole wikileaks attack by governments reminds me of the hydra. You kill wikileaks, and two appear to takes its place." After years of reading depressing financial blogs, nothing has warmed my soul more than the events of the last few days and seeing people step up and fight in wikileaks name. Long live wikileaks.

I'm actually for almost no taxes on corporations in principal. The problem we've got now is that corporations gain more in government benefits then they pay for IMO. After the citizens united case, I see no reason why corporations shouldn't be held to the upper most tax bracket, if not MORE.
