Krugman hits out again. by blixt141in politics

[–]philasurfer 2 points3 points ago

The best point here is the way the GOP and Wall Street defenders turn any questioning of income inequality into anti-capitalist criticism of success. There is no in between, no room for discussion. In their mind, any discussion of income inequality is off the table. kind of the way, the House republicans have signed tax pledges refusing to raise taxes one cent. No room for negotiation, no analysis involved.

Ofcourse, anyone who so desperately wants to quiet discussion on a particular topic knows they can't defend their position. For them, even discussing income inequality is high stakes, it threatens their VERY luxurious lifestyle. They are not going to take threats to that lightly, and not only are they not going to entertain decreasing income inequality, even the prospect of discussing this issue will be met with their full force.

It seems we are in the middle of a major class struggle in which one side, the poor, is almost unaware. The rich are so afraid of them being awakened, they cannot afford certain discussions. Any criticism from the President threatens to awaken the beast and they know it.

Cory Booker's point was so damaging because it evidences his deep, deep corruption about which he is in denial. Discussing the mertis of venture capitalists is a very healthy discussion to be having, but Booker is so corrupted he finds such discussion "nauseating." He equates it to the birther's attacks on Obama. How discussing the merits of a financial system that leaves workers destroyed and accrues massive wealth to a few is equally nauseating to racist, unfounded personal attacks is only puzzling if you don't understand how Wall Street uses their money, donating to Booker, to silence any dissent.

Hi anti-Krugman robot, thank you for your obligatory unrelated post "debunking" everything Krugman has ever said. As usual, thank you for your informative and highly relevant post!

10 Things Every College Grad Should Know before Entering the Real World by jshurein personalfinance

That was a surprisingly good article.

It is so true that you will suck at your first job, you will probably hate it, but if you stick it out, learn your trade and stay focused during your 20s it will pay off later.

I see all my friends now (mid 30s) and the ones who managed to stick it out and stay focused in their 20s, not bounce around jobs, are doing really well.

I think many college grads don't realize that their professional education is just beginning when they graduate. You have to use your 20s to learn skills and accumulate contacts and knowledge, which will become valuable later. Too many people think graduating college = high pay and success. Graduating is just the beginning.

I don't think the author meant not to use a credit card at all, but not to get into credit card debt. Not sure what is juvenile about that?

Not sure how much your water bills are, but mine are really really low.

I flush every time. My wife refuses and thinks she is doing a wonderful thing by not flushing. Her pee sits in the toilet, scum builds up and it is quite gross.

I spend more money on cleaning products to clean the disgusting toilet, than we would have if she would just flush the damn toilet.

Understand the value of passive income.

People always say this. I don't get it. So understand the value of making money for not working.

Isn't it fairly obvious that would be awesome, but is really hard to make happen? As in you need money to make money?

Milton Friedman on central banking at zero interest rates: "They can buy long-term government securities, and they can keep buying them and providing high-powered money until the high powered money starts getting the economy in an expansion." by johnleemkin Economics

[–]philasurfer 4 points5 points ago

As a liberal, I'm surprised to be saying this, but with Solyndra and the West Virginia Cisco router scandal on one hand, and SpaceX's spectacular launch on the other, I think Friedman has the better idea.

You might not want to take a few outliers and draw broad conclusions. There are countless government projects that are successful and just as many private sector ones that fail. Look at private prisons, they are awful. Look at the National Institute for Health, a public agency that does a lot of good.

Double trouble at JP Morgan: trader's losses could exceed $7bn by rspix000in politics

[–]philasurfer 1 point2 points ago

If these are the losses they are experiencing in a relatively calm market environment, what happens if there is some sort of market turmoil? Greece leaves the euro, the market has a precipitous drop?

Their losses could be massive.

Ofcourse, the banks can stand up against some bad losses, but what we should be concerned about are entirely predictable, but much more sever losses.

[–]philasurfer 5 points6 points ago

For all those redditors who were saying that the original 2 billion loss was small relative to JP morgan's balance sheet and there was no need to worry, do you remember how I said we don't quite know the extent of the losses, so there is a need to worry?

Yeah, just sayin.

Also, if these are the losses they are experiencing in a relatively calm market environment, what happens if there is entirely possible uptick in volatility, or a dramatic increase in volatility. Uh em, Greece leaving the Euro, for example. Losses could be much more severe.

Bernie Sanders introduces a bill that bans financial executives from regulating themselves by taking positions at the Federal Reserve by griffin_peterin politics

[–]philasurfer 21 points22 points ago

Who would control them? Someone NOT trained in finance? How does that solve ANYTHING?

There are plenty of people trained in finance who are not the executives running the banks being regulated. Academics, former bankers, public servants, perhaps even bankers that are not under the regulation of the Fed etc.
