Do you think that Cyphertite is more secure than Tarsnap?

If yes, please tell me why, so I can make Tarsnap better. If no, your title is false advertising.

Sick people: In hospitals, dying.

Clearly we should shut down all the hospitals -- people keep on dying in them!

Canadians want feds to assume "leadership role" and fix health care: report by coldbrookin CanadaPolitics

[–]perciva -1 points0 points ago

Canadians don't like the Canadian constitution. News at 11.

Alas, since Canadians don't want to renegotiate the constitution or ratify any proposed changes to it, we're stuck with health care being a matter of provincial jurisdiction.

Where can I get a warfarin blood test? by travelstackerin vancouver

[–]perciva 0 points1 point ago

aren't you going to need a physician to follow up on the results?

Warfarin is an unusual test -- like blood glucose for diabetics, it can be used for patient self-management of dosing.

We're all Canadian and I support a Canadian's right to attend university without a crowd of thugs invading their classroom and threatening them with violence.

Grant user access to specific folder inside bucket? Is that possible? by moctopodesin aws

[–]perciva 4 points5 points ago

I believe you can specify an IAM Resource of "arn:aws:s3:::example-bucket/folder/*" to get the behaviour you're looking for.

Robyn Urback on shocking anti-male hatred on the SFU campus by ScotiaTidein canada

[–]perciva 0 points1 point ago

The most recent Canadian Supreme Court ruling in this area essentially said that "if I fall asleep / unconscious, keep on going" is illegal, because at the point the person might want to withdraw consent but be unable to do so (due to being asleep / unconscious).

Or as a lawyer friend of mine put it: Ladies, please have the court appoint a guardian for you to approve any kinky sex you may be into.

Robyn Urback on shocking anti-male hatred on the SFU campus by ScotiaTidein canada

[–]perciva 2 points3 points ago

We're in /r/canada, and recent Canadian court judgments have included rather strict interpretations of the ability to consent to sexual activity. You're right that having a BAC > 0.0 doesn't remove ability to consent, but it seems that the courts are setting the line rather lower than many people might expect.

Of course, IANAL, and you should consult a qualified lawyer in your jurisdiction if any of this becomes personally relevant to you.

You don't have to be unconscious to be unable to consent.

New FreeBSD Security Officer by percivain freebsd

[–]perciva[S] 1 point2 points ago

The role of FreeBSD Security Officer is a volunteer position.

To get the position... become a FreeBSD committer, work on security matters enough that you get invited to join the security team, do a good job and demonstrate your reliability until you get named a Deputy Security Officer, then wait for the current Security Officer to retire. You might be able to do it in 5-10 years if you work really hard. :-)

Where does a man go to speak to someon about the women who slept with him when he was blackout drunk and cannot remember sleeping with her?

The phrase is "rape victims". Blackout drunk = unable to consent.

NDP's policy on Quebec student unrest: more federal cash for education by Troll_Dadin CanadaPolitics

[–]perciva 1 point2 points ago

My point is that being able to afford tuition fees are a very very small factor in deciding whether people go to university. It's probably the thing people blame most often, but statistics show that ability to pay is far less of a predictive factor than parental education or high school grades.

Doesn't it seem slightly unfair to tax the poor to provide free education for the rich?

I hate SFU! Their extra fees are RIDICULOUS. by L-Altin simonfraser

[–]perciva 2 points3 points ago

If they direct you to a dispute form, I recommend filling out the form. :-)

Seriously, nobody in the registrar's office is trying to screw you out of $50. I actually get annoyed with them being overly nice to students. If they can give you your $50 back they will.

I was also charged a bullshit $50 course drop fee for dropping a course last November 25 for this last Spring semester.. it was literally a couple days after my enrollment date.

Either this isn't true, or a computer glitched somewhere. The $50 course drop penalty for the Spring 2012 semester applies to courses dropped between December 3 and January 11: http://students.sfu.ca/deadlines.html

Andrew Coyne: The idea we can’t debate abortion is unworthy of a democratic country by Borror0in CanadaPolitics

[–]perciva 3 points4 points ago

Failure is a matter of perspective. I think the fact that a new abortion law was debated vigorously and defeated in parliament was a great success.

[–]perciva 4 points5 points ago

The supreme court has decided this issue. I say again, our civil rights are not up for debate in parliament.

Did you read the article? Have you read the supreme court ruling?

The SCC practically begged parliament to bring in a new abortion law.

As Woodworth said himself, there are currently no laws in Canada covering this area. Eventually, we are going to have to pass something.

You seem to have an interesting opinion about the appropriate amount of legislation in this country.

There are currently no laws in Canada covering whether you should climb stairs starting with your right foot or your left foot; are we going to eventually have to pass something to resolve that?
