I get what you're saying, but "defense" research is the only the area of science where everyone doesn't really benefit. And lots of other countries suffer for the US to do what it does. This kind of complaint (the original topic) just seems shallow in comparison.

True, but one could argue that a lot of the USA's scientific advancement comes as the loss to other countries through "brain drain". And so what we are seeing is in fact a bit of a balancing.
