TROPHY CASE

Does anyone use M5 hosting? by thymewizardin Ubuntu

[–]pavs 0 points1 point ago

I use vpsdeploy but there are many vps similar to this.

You can also look at a bit pricey but popular vps choice by a lot of people: http://www.linode.com/.

I have personally never used them because they are a bit pricey. But they have good reputation.

These are unmanaged servers so you have to setup everything from scratch by yourself.

not sure if spamming or not but whats your requirements and what your budget? There are some really cheap vps out there that scale out as your need increases. Instead of getting started on a dedicated server, its better to start small.

At the end of the day it depends on your need. Do you need a managed or unmanaged server? Is it memory intensive? Needs fast disk?

I recently setup an ubuntu server in lest than 5 hours with nginx/mysql/php-5/php-fpm/apc/memcache/varnish/cdn (for wordpress). Also setup security measures and monitoring system on lowly SSD based 100mbps unmanaged vps that costs me $13 a month (plus cdn). You can throw a million hits per month on that server and it won't even feel a thing.

So going back to the question, is the server will be hosting some lowly static or dynamic site that will get only 100 views per month than getting a server for $100/month (price from your link) is an over kill.

My parents asked me to convert their current website to one using WordPress. What are some things I need to keep in mind if I would have someone do it for me? Is it possible to learn the skills in a short while? by cyrilioin Wordpress

The thing is, its not a hobby project, its a business website. He should learn the wordpress stuff when he doing a pet project for fun. Not when he is trying to build his parents business website. I would assume the functionality of the site is important for their business?

As someone who have worked extensively with wordpress over many years. These are some of my opinion. Others might have different experience/opinion.

  • You can't learn and do it yourself in any reasonable time. (at least 4-5 months, with many many trials and errors.) Also Wordpress is not only about html, you have to be decent with php/mysql and css too.
  • It will cost you more to hire someone to port the current design and functionality to wordpress than to start from scratch on a new design (Well, it actually depends on the design. But generally speaking).
  • Without actually looking at the site and its content I would guess that it should cost around $400-1000. But shouldn't be more than that. If less than 400 than either that person is desperate or not experienced enough.
  • You need more than just someone porting your site to wordpress. You need someone who will not break the existing SEO and make it more SEO friendly. This might seem trivial to some but I have seen experienced people from heavily funded online business make silly SEO mistake that wiped out their site from search engine. They mistakenly used both www and non-www links for their site and their site had zero results on some of the keywords. And this is SEO 101 stuff there.
  • If you are going to hire someone make sure you very clear and concise about what you want. Designers/developers don't like to make huge changes in the middle of the project with the same agreed upon price. Some can be very anal about any change at all (other that what was agreed upon). Make sure atleast they are somewhat flexible.
  • Do background check on their previous work/clients.

Good luck.

Can someone please explain to me how facebook plans to make money? (not trolling, just genuinely curious) by SonicScreamerin finance

Most people gave good and the obvious angles on why Facebook valuation is so high. Another way to look at the "facebook has huge userbase" meme angle is that fact alone makes them such a powerful potential.

Lets say tomorrow they were to open a online store a la amazon. They don't even have to look for customers or users or what their taste is or what they might like. An amazon like business alone is a 100B dollar business. They can always start other service or product and simple divert their users to their product. Think about it. Pinterest pretty much exist at the mercy of facebook. If they can make 5 pinterest like business they are gold and worth their 100b many times over.

The assumption by most people is that facebook will just stick with the facebook platform, which I am pretty sure they won't.

What crazy server-side optimization do you use to make your site super fast? by pavsin sysadmin

looks very interesting. But its very much looks like an experimental port and not ready for prime-time yet. Its a custom WordPress port which might not be supported by all plugins or updated automatically without breaking something in the process.

The thing with small projects like this is support and documentation is very much limited if something breaks you are pretty much left on your own. I don't think that's ideal for a running site.

This along with wordpress fork for Nosql + nginx SPDY support are some very interesting options that can increase site performance by few fold.

Its too early for me to recommend it since I just started using it about a week ago. I am using the LESSD-1 plan: http://vpsdeploy.com/lowendssd.php which is 12.99/m

It looks like I got the switchport wrong. Its 100mbps not 1gbps.

W3 is actually pretty good overall. But its only as good as the back-end because it caches stuff either on memory (memchace/APC) or disk. Even a high-end SSD is slower than memory. So I think its important to have proper back-end to compliment W3. True for high traffic sites. Small sites will just do fine on disk-cache.

Decent traffic, 500k pv/m.

This whole setup + maxcdn cost me less than $20/month.

I don't understand if loadbalancer will make things faster (which I am looking for). In my current setup it hardly puts a dent on the resources. So resource is not a problem. And increase resource is just a click away.

I was wondering if there was any server level optimization I am missing. I too think it should be good enough and I pretty much covered most things as far as optimization for speed is concerned. But since I am new to this I wasn't sure.

Thanks.

Since I am done with optimization I am going to look at hardening (security) / backup / monitoring before I switch from my current managed cookie-cutter setup.
