I just applied for a job at The Apple Store as a "Creative". Do any current or former store employees care to share what the interview process is like and what it's like to work in a store? by latecenturyin apple

Um do you? How is making a position seem desirable, and then when people apply, telling all of them the need to work their way up that job not a bait and switch?

Extremely Useful Pictures of Achieving Correct Blade Angles by videowordfleshin wicked_edge

[–]p0tent1al 0 points1 point ago

I find "shave with the head of the razor as parallel to your face as possible" works for me. Basically you start parallel and continue to angle the razor until you feel it cutting, and that's the angle that is going to be the most efficient / razor burn free.

First DE shave - overall unpleasant... by HexCin wicked_edge

If you want dense, work on getting close to dry. I've found that to get a denser lather, I apply on pretty much regular, and then I start applying water little by little. If you find that doesn't work, then you might have hard water, or not too good soap, or not too good of a brush. I find too dense isn't the best though (I like a touch bit more watery) because for every pass of the razor, there is tons of lather that isn't being used that is just stacked on other lather that is being used... so I like a little bit more watery because it keeps my face a little bit moisturized and slick which IMO is the point of the lather. Usually with a dense lather, the more time goes on, my skin will get drier just because. Ramblings of someone fairly new to this though, YMMV (though I am shaving with a slant bar & feathers, so I have decent technique).

I didn't even finish my first time, and my second time sucked (and last night, I used a new razor, and that sucked too). Overall happy though, just give it time.

Your lather was pretty decent: it's all how you apply it. Get it on to your face and use a soft touch to spread it out. Again just keep working at it. I don't know if tweezerman is the best brush but at least soak it. Also consider building lather on your face, as it gives it a little more chance to do it's job.

The Gillette 7 OClock was also my first blade.... it wasn't sharp enough to cut through my stubble without using a considerable amount of force. If you did a decent prep and the hair is tugging WTG then you'll probably want to try a sharper blade.... you're going to have to be a little more careful with it, but what I've found is the sharper the blade, the less pressure I need to put which is what has been working for me.

Let's play Devil's Advocate for a second: what does this prove?

So we know one of the people involved is a Papa Johns employee (A GM for that matter). I think we're past who drew picture, and more curious about the motives behind the drawing (whether this is some chance to grab some karma + marketing attention), and I don't think this rules out that angle at all.

Anybody shave at the gym? by kaybizzlein wicked_edge

[–]p0tent1al 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't have had a problem personally, but I see what you're saying. I find that now that I have a little experience under my belt, shaving in a quiet place definitely lets you hear the sound of your hair being cut, but I've found as long as it's not too noisy I can still hear it being cut, just without the pronounced effect it usually has. I think when I went to the gym it wasn't packed as when most people go (like right after work and / or on the weekend).

But seriously though: if you're at a sink, and you've run an alum bar over your hands, you shave and you're only touching your brush + razor that are on top of a paper towel, how much real hard is it going to do you? From a gross factor (if you're grossed out by gyms) I get it, but technically speaking it can't really be that big of a risk, it's just more of a preference thing. After I put on aftershave I'm not going to be touching my face anyways.

Just going to play Devil's advocate to a coule of these points. First off, you're assuming a lot here. I used to have a membership with L.A. Fitness, and I used to go right after work (or on the weekend in the morning): Depending on your gym, there is PLENTY of room to shave. In my situation, there was the locker room, and there was shelves for people to do whatever (mix your protein, etc). Then there was a separate room for the Shower / Bathroom / Sauna. And then there was a separate room with the lockers that had about 7 faucets that almost never were used concurrently. Honestly I never saw a use for that many faucets: There is already a bathroom with a faucet, and there is already a shower: what do you need all those faucets for? I just think it's presumptuous to call foul when you have no sort of context behind the situation. If I'd had the capacity or the want to shave when I went to the gym, I would have had no issues.

if you're setting up for a wet shave, you're essentially taking up two: one to shave in, and the one next to you that nobody will use (like the no homo urinal spacing).

No not the same at all. No homo urinal spacing is because people have their dicks out and gay people (no offense) exist. Who cares if your near someone else using a faucet? Since when was this a thing?

Do you really want to be touching your face, possibly with little nicks, after touching anything in a gym bathroom? Hello, I'd like you to meet Mr. Staph infection.

It's really not that serious. You prep, you do a couple of passes (put a paper town down under your tools), rinse and leave. You also change / shower / sauna at a gym too, except after shaving you put astringent and alum on your face so it's probably more kosher than those other things.

I would never take the risk at the gym where there's a lot more foot traffic and the people couldn't care less if they accidentally bump you.

Again you're making the assumption that the place is packed when he's doing this. I've never had someone straight up bump me while I was using a public faucet, at least hard enough to possibly jolt a razor I would have in my hand hard enough to cut myself. Again YMMV (this is probably your most legitimate point) but personally I would just be careful (there is a mirror behind you so you can see if someone is too close to you).

Has anyone noticed this new trend of ditching the significance of sidebars? Is this a good idea? by prymein web_design

[–]p0tent1al 4 points5 points ago

I might want to read about the author of the post before I read the content.

That's understandable but you're probably in the minority. Besides if you want to read about the author, you're probably going to scroll to wherever that information is. It's secondary to the content, so it should be positioned secondary.

Has anyone noticed this new trend of ditching the significance of sidebars? Is this a good idea? by prymein web_design

[–]p0tent1al 1 point2 points ago

Well the content in these examples is the stuff at the top. If you have the sidebar you're probably constraining the main content so the user is going to have to scroll anyways, so why not put the content at the top so that they're experience is optimal at the outset, and they can scroll afterwards to do what they would like? There are like 0 people who are like "aww man, I hate that they moved the ads & recommended videos down": who cares? Most of the time you're not going to be able to get away with this like Vimeo & Dribbble because ads == revenue, and some over zealous boss wants all those options in the users face because he's used sloppy interfaces all his life and he equates that with good software. Anytime you can focus more on the interface and less on the other bullshit that people don't come to see, the better.

To be honest when I applied I was a Reddit member for 4 years (5 now) so I don't know if they took it easy on me or what, so whatever I say about my experience probably isn't going to be accurate for you. Sorry.

Hey look, Matt Inman of The Oatmeal just rebuilt Reddit. by tspekin webdev

[–]p0tent1al 0 points1 point ago

I see what you're saying but I find issue in giving competitors credence merely because they are an alternative. I think that line of thinking invites people to make soulless carbon copies of existing entities, knowing that people will give it the benefit of the doubt because it's the underdog. We should be encouraging innovation, not giving stuff a pat on the back just because. Look at his reasoning for creating the site:

this site has no real community.

This isn't even about accomplishing anything already existing, this is just piggy backing on the success of oatmeal to do what other sites already do really well.

I think we've assessed that people can die from nut analogies, you're beat ing a dead horse. However in both cases you lying to people, and not honoring their request (people do get sick from eating meat but I'm not really trying to focus on that as we know you're fixated on "ALLERGIES DIFFERENT FROM PREFERENCE"). In one someone could get direly sick, but in both you are shitting on what someone has asked of you. Just because I won't die from eating meat, doesn't give you carte blanche to say "fuck you, I'm putting meat in this anyway".

I made the analogy to explain my point, not for you to point out the obvious. The point is, if I'm allergic to nuts, you wouldn't put them near my food. If I'm vegetarian, you wouldn't go "Well fuck him, meat isn't going to hurt him" because that defeats the purpose entirely. Whether allergic or preference, I'm asking for something specific and my goal is to get that (or to know exactly that rules you are bending and for me to be ok with that), otherwise you really aren't following my request are you?

Let's get this on Mythbusters. by tookoolaidin wicked_edge

[–]p0tent1al 1 point2 points ago

I think it's subjective: I've tried both and I've founded with hot water, my hair becomes softer. With cold water, my skin becomes less susceptible. For me, I'd rather my hair be softer and risk more irritation (besides, softer skin means I can do less pressure). For vets who have been shaving for a long time, who have a slant bar or a SE (and a nice prep), I could see cold water working, but I think it's one of those things that people truly are going to respond to differently. I tried it once and I like it, but I'm going to need a little more experience and a slant bar probably to pull it off.

Tell a chef he couldn't tell between something cooked with meat. For those of us who haven't eaten it (or those with trained pallets) meat has a very distinct, bitter taste. For me not to catch it, it would have to be very very little contamination, and even then 50% chance my stomach acts up later, I ask then and it turns out something meat based was added.

Attention vegetarians by Se7en_Sinnerin funny

[–]p0tent1al 2 points3 points ago

It's very simple: if you don't have the capability to serve vegetarian food, then don't bullshit your customers, just do your meat items. Anything else is a lie. You're not equipped to make "vegetarian" food up to pretty regular standards? DON'T DO IT THEN. It's like making toys for kids and complaining about having to make sure there are no small parts to swallow.. guess what fuckface: Comes with the territory. Vegetarian food does not need a separate kitchen, I do however expect that my veggie burger is not cooked simultaneously with bacon or in oil which meat has been cooked.

Attention vegetarians by Se7en_Sinnerin funny

[–]p0tent1al 3 points4 points ago

I can usually taste if something had been cooked in / with meat: it absorbs the juices and flavor. That's like putting nuts in and telling people with nut allergies to fuck off: it will contaminate the other food your eating. There are places who don't cross contaminate so this posting is quite funny.

Don't fear the Feather by AngryCOMMguyin wicked_edge

[–]p0tent1al 0 points1 point ago

Imagine coming from an electric shaver, and never putting a blade to your face before... the fear is the same as if I handed you a knife I sharpened right in front of you and told you to shave. It's bad enough that I'm scared of of wetshaving with a razor in general, but now I have to try, according to many accounts, the sharpest blade there is, even suggested against (at least initially) by LeisureGuy and other pros.

Of course I've improved my technique and after a week and a half I use the feather on my head & face and I go at a pretty nice clip time wise and I get really nice shaves that don't leave my skin irritated. But yeah expect someone new to be scared, and that's exactly what is preferred too (because if they're new to wetshaving and they aren't scared of the blade, chances are they're going to cut themselves... hell after 2 shaves when the blade starts losing it's edge I start getting scared... like how far can I push this thing)...

Horrible suggestions:

  • What.cd is not a good place to start. It's the only place that almost requires a seedbox or uploading your own content to maintain a decent ratio. Also their interview is pretty tough and you only get 3 tries (you have to know about a lot of technical stuff... e.g. you have to be able to analyze a spectral analysis, you have to memorize bitrates for v0 - v6, etc.

I would suggest baconbits, it's the first one I got in. Tons and tons of freeleech (I have an insane ratio), not too hard of an interview process.
