Good Guy Stan Lee by kegman83in atheism

[–]otakuman 27 points28 points ago

A scene from X-Men which left me thinking a lot, was when this politician guy tells the giant robots (forgot their name, sentinels?) to kill the mutants.

The robot tells him that it's illogical, because mutants are the majority.

Mind = Blown.

What is one area or genre of sci fi that has grown stale or hasn't been thoroughly explored yet? by BeingSeriousHerein scifi

Near-term space shows set in the Solar System (like 100 years out, with ships capable of maybe 10% light speed).

The Zone of the Enders series (videogames) take that approach. "Fist of Mars" was pretty good. It's a turn-based strategy game (with optional FPS mode in each turn). The "Enders" are people living on the outer solar system, who are victims of xenophobia by people from Earth. Lots of politics and government corruption involved; terrorist groups, repression by the military... the story's pretty neat.

EDIT: I've been recommended Zone of the Enders: Idolo (OVA), I think there's a copy floating around in youtube.

Creo que podemos afirmar que la inseguridad actual se la debemos al las presidencias del PAN.

I loved the ending for "The profession". The orwellian environment around the protagonist did help a lot.

To be honest, the original title just sucked.

Well, nothing to do with the answer, but I just remembered a certain Flintstones clip...

My bully, my best friend: At first, I thought it was a joke when John called me "gay." By the time the school intervened, no one was laughing by davidreiss666in TrueReddit

In elementary school, my best friend - my ONLY friend was a coward. He would play along with the jerks whenever they bullied me.

One day, I decided to act. I stepped on both of his feet and pushed him. He fell with a big thud on the floor, and I didn't talk to him in days.

Finally I let him apologize. The bully was gone and I had won my friend back.

Some comparative mythology by 357Magnumin atheism

[–]otakuman 4 points5 points ago

That's precisely the book I'm reading. I also bought "Canaanite myths and legends", mainly for the Ugaritic Baal Cycle, which the hebrews also copied stuff from. I also recommend Mark S. Smith's books, they're awfully technical, but they are indeed enlightening regarding Ugaritic literature.

Also, I'm glad you mentioned that the Mesopotamians being a more advanced civilization. Not only did they have pretty advanced irrigation systems; Their literature is so advanced they use punning and wordplay a lot in their works.

Also, they kept improving and adapting epics as they were passed to another generation, we could say they engaged in some kind of "wiki" practices for their fiction. (If only they had kept some kind of version control!)

Everyone knows that the Mesopotamian peoples had their own flood myth which appears in the Epic of Gilgamesh (read it if you haven't, it is rad).

I'm on tablet VI right now! I kinda felt sorry for Shamhat :(

Okay, you got my curiosity. Who wrote that book on the OT, and how did you come to lose your faith?

I am absolutely shocked. Bill O'Reilly up to this point has always been such a staunch ally of the Occupy movement and left wing causes in general.

LOL. You almost got me.

This was the image that changed my life.

You may laugh or think I'm a troll, but this image turned me from Christian to atheist. It's a long story. I cried, yelled at God, wondered about the purpose of my life... everything. Why? Because I replied with "those idiots, God can't answer that prayer! That depends on humans, and humans only!".

And then it hit me.

May I add that the Enligthenment did much more for human rights than Christianity? How come it took 20 whole centuries for black people to have the same rights as white people? While gay rights are still questioned in the U.S., in the Netherlands they're a norm.
