louieanderson on how subtle economic and social trends have impacted the social contract by FelixPin DepthHub

[–]orkydork 0 points1 point ago

Aaaand my response (at the risk of this being a bit like an echo chamber):

So, what's wrong with the "responsible young adults" of which you speak? Are they just too thick to understand that they have been disenfranchised by their status as renters?

No sir. The problem here is that they can't get $50k+ jobs to both pay off student loan debts (which are far higher than generations ahead of us have had to pay) and purchase a house, let alone start a family (which I'm not even considering reality at this point). It isn't feasible for us to go further into debt than any generation before us - frankly, the thought is pretty damn scary if you're already faced with massive debt from education that supposedly was to get you better-paying jobs. Most importantly, we learned from our parents; the 2008 housing crisis happened because borrowing money was too easy and many of the baby boomers wanted to live beyond their means. Two forclosures and three divorces later...many of them regret it.

No, there is no substantive difference. That's the repeated, tragic fallacy of every youth movement. The belief that somehow they are different, and that when they are in change things will be better, because their hearts aren't dead and their eyes are open to the Truth.

I'm not sure why Truth is Capitalized here, outside of some awry religious reference (and I hope that isn't true).

But new generations are better in many ways (not in all ways, and we can cherry pick examples to disprove this - but it's a general trend). Progress happens as a result of increased intelligence and awareness. We stand on the shoulders of giants, and build from that starting point. Throughout history, previous generations have gone thankless. This sucks. Personally, I am incredibly thankful of the hard work that was put into this country to make it a fair, safe, and free place to exist. Every day I show endless patience and respect to those in my building that don't understand computers and get mad at me because it's my damn fault the machine doesn't work as they intend it to.

I do everything I can to maintain the balance in society, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that the balance is actually eroding before my eyes due to selfishness on all fronts - the poor, the rich, and everyone in between.

In fact, progress is what all of these movements have in common. It's the constant that binds us all together and sure, it makes us "the same" in some ways, but this most recent problem is actually substantially different.

For the first time in history there are less of us than our parents. We have less voting pull, we have less economic power, by majority rule we will never see any form of change until the baby boomers mostly die off. We must do it with force, or do nothing. So far, we have chosen to do absolutely fucking nothing.

The establishment against which you rebel is the result of a youth rebellion against an establishment that was the result of a youth rebellion against an establishment that was the result of a youth rebellion against an establishment that was the result of a youth rebellion against an establishment....

Yep, except this rebellion has not yet started. It will, though, very soon. All of us "dumb young people" that are "the same as you were" are hyper-aware of the limits that the planet has imposed on us, and therefore, exponentially more liberal (to our great dissatisfaction, as we find ourselves in an increasingly capitalist neocon country). That means we care about shit that's more important than a Lexus, a 4BR Suburbia house, or, frankly, the whole fucking American Dream.

For many of us, it was always a dream.

We wait, and we ponder.

I'm replying to my own comment because a user made this post, and I spent a ton of time typing out a response before they deleted their thoughts, cutting off further communication. Please see the following:

Plenty of young people abuse buildings they rent in... so these contracts make sense.... It really sucks for responsible young adults.....I argue that yes, lack of ownership does dictate disenfranchisement

So, what's wrong with the "responsible young adults" of which you speak? Are they just too thick to understand that they have been disenfranchised by their status as renters?

Your perception of this issue seems tainted by your unwillingness to understand what we are going through and how it is so different from what you've gone through.

Like any human at work with too much time on my hands, I just want to see how far the rabbit hole goes.

In this case, it went right into your own ego. Since yours is a disgusting, nasty dimension which I definitely don't want to be a part of, I'll exit as quickly as I arrived. You have my apologies.

E.g., if you rent where you live, does that mean that you should shit on the floor?

Well, there's really no reason not to, which is why my landlords include damage deposits up-front and force me to sign a contract that puts anything and everything in their favor. Plenty of young people abuse buildings they rent in, I've seen it again and again, so these contracts make sense for profit-seeking landlords. It really sucks for responsible young adults.

I argue that yes, lack of ownership does dictate disenfranchisement, both literally (McDonalds) and figuratively (rent vs lease vs ownership).

Would you rather purchase a car that has spent its entire life as a lease/rental vehicle, or would you purchase it from a single owner (over 25, since that is the minimum rental age), all other factors the same?

Would you rather live in a home that has had nothing but renters for 20 years, or one that was cared for by an empty nest old couple for 20 years?

Your perception of this issue seems tainted by your unwillingness to understand what we are going through and how it is so different from what you've gone through.

Of course, this is typical, because I don't fully understand the struggles that poverty-stricken individuals in poor countries face. I do try to, so I can solve it, though.

it can more or less keep printing money because the world depends on the US dollar being valuable. If tomorrow all commodities markets were to suddenly switch to the yen or something and the US dollar wasn't so important internationally, the value of the US dollar could crash

Would you say, then, that if the dollar crashed in exactly such a fashion, that the bitcoin may actually go up in value, at least somewhat? It might take months for this to occur after the initial panic, of course, but I could see bitcoin becoming a global currency standard with algorithm and encryption geeks at the wheel (not bad at all, really).

I see adoption as being limited entirely by infrastructure and existing corporate interests right now.

Also, off-topic, perhaps, but do you ever browse /r/collapse? Just curious if you buy in to this sort of idea or if you were just giving us an interesting scenario.

Boy, I could give you like fourty more questions, I love your way of explaining this stuff. Thanks for the posts!

Believe it or not, this actually gave me an extremely serious reaction. I thought about what it would be like to truly experience what was going on, because I felt the turmoil and rage in his emotive voice. He does sound like a kid, because who the fuck wouldn't if one of our best friends suddenly became a zombie? It would be mortifying!

I also play D3 and agree with your point, but wish to bring up something a bit interesting. If you read a book today instead of playing D3, you might learn about something you then become more interested in, which then triggers you to build something from that knowledge gained. Experience cultivates skills and personality.

I love D3, but...hmph.

This is an incredible point, and fascinating to me as I got my Newegg preorder about 3 days after everyone else - I'm getting awesome prices on phat lewt and I had no idea why. I'm only level 32 or something right now, but doing quite a bit of damage for my level (Wizard, appx 1200 dps).

Of course!

I guess I wasn't even pretending to myself that Duke Nukem 3D had much of a story to "remake" in the form of DNF, but honestly I haven't played DNF yet (and probably won't).

It's just very difficult for me to determine what constitutes a full remake. I'd agree with you that ME3 isn't ME2, but is that purely because of the title?

To be fair, I think TooSmooth said this because he/she is concerned about your health. It's not normal to have this much of a problem waking up, and I'd agree with his/her assessment. You may be dangerously low on Vitamin D or something, I'm not sure. The melatonin suggestion below is another good one.

There's nothing wrong with this idea at all, and I really like it, but it sounds like you may have some underlying health issues (especially since you say that every now and again you somehow sleep through that huge speaker madness). Your call though, honestly.
