I'm inclined to agree with the tourmaline diagnosis, though the only samples I found were more black than the green I'm seeing here (computer screen maybe) and they were found independent from anything else.

I've heard of highways exploding when they heated up too quickly during the winter to summer transition, could the same idea be applied here?
