Torry Hansen adopted a Russian boy and later sent him back to Moscow on a one-way flight with only a note pinned to his sleeve, has been ordered to pay $150,000 and an additional $1,000 a month in child support until he’s an adult. by op1500in news

[–]ohstrangeone 10 points11 points ago

Hansen sent Artyom Saveliev back to Russia in April 2010 with a letter saying the child was disturbed and violent and she didn’t want him anymore.

She was probably right, there's an old AMA on here somewhere from a father of...3, I believe it was, maybe 2, adopted children from Russia who were just all sorts of fucked up (not the kids' fault, but still).

This doesn't necessarily justify it, there was almost certainly a better way to handle it than that, but my point is yeah, the situation that made her do this could have been pretty fucking bad.

The general drug policy is supported by all major political parties and, according to the opinion polls, the restrictive approach receives broad support from the public.

Yup, that's the problem, just like I said. There it is right there, very clearly stated: "the restrictive approach receives broad support from the public." WTF, Sweden? Why so backwards--you of all people usually aren't?

Send it to them with a note explaining what happened, even if it's not still under warranty I'll bet you they'll send you a new one. This kind of failure should never happen regardless of how old it is or what it was being used for (within reason), and they know it.

Here's a good example, the other Scandinavian countries are similar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_policy_of_Sweden

Complete zero tolerance and I've heard anecdotally that Scandinavians in general (especially Swedes) are terrified of drugs, e.g. a story I heard about a dutch guy with Swedish roomates in the Netherlands where the guy starts smoking a blunt (marijuana cigarette) in the other room a few hours after the Swedes had just moved in, the Swedes see it and freak the fuck out, refuse to come over to that side of the house the rest of the time they're there, refuse to speak to Dutch guy, and are terrified of him thinking he's going to go nuts and murder them in their sleep or something.

Other stories I've heard, though not as extreme, generally correlate with this: they're very irrationally scared of illegal drugs and their users. Oh, but it's fine to binge drink to an extreme nearly every weeked and stumble home black-out drunk at 5 AM on Saturday, a very popular activity in Sweden (and, I suspect, the other Scandinavian countries)--this would certainly qualify as alcohol abuse and make the people who do it alcoholics, but they see nothing wrong with this while simultaneously thinking anyone who smokes one marijuana cigarette is severely mentally ill and in desperate need of arrest and forced treatment and rehabilitation :/

You guys really need to work on your attitudes and laws concerning drugs, they're atrocious (I love a lot of things about the Scandinavian countries, but this isn't one of them, it's actually very contrary to the overall attitude of tolerance and live-and-let-live-mind-your-own-business and such). They're disturbingly similar to those in the U.S., if not worse if you can believe that.

[–]ohstrangeone 4 points5 points ago

Agreed. The attitude of the Scandinavian countries towards drugs is shockingly intolerant, very contrary to how their culture is in general. They're honestly a lot like the U.S. in this regard, they seem to think all drugs should be illegal or heavily regulated (look at how they handle alcohol sales, utter stupidity and ridiculousness) and that drug users are horribly dangerous and should be locked up. It's really quite shocking and disconcerting when you're familiar with them in general and then you find this very out-of-place aspect of them, it just doesn't seem to fit with everything else about them, it's very odd. They're scared to death of drugs, it's so strange.

if the attackers choose that place and that hour, it's certain that they planned to kill students.

This wasn't mafia. They're not that fucking stupid. No way. It was set up to look like mafia, but it wasn't mafia.

For those unfamiliar: the mafia in Italy very heavily relies on the community and in many places they essentially are the local government (they do trash collection and such even), if the community as a whole were to turn against them they wouldn't survive for very long and they damned well know it. About the fastest and most efficient way to ensure their demise would be to bomb a fucking school and kill some kids, ergo I don't fucking think so.

[–]ohstrangeone 1 point2 points ago

That's what I was going to guess based on what I've heard. If you're willing to be patient and you really want a hot Korean girlfriend, is it fairly easy to do? Do they have a thing for foreigners like the Japanese do (i.e. they like blond hair and blue eyes, etc.)? I've just heard that they're extremely racist and you can have a lot of problems with the men there if they see you dating one of 'their' women.
