Madrona father caught in the crossfire, killed at MLK and Cherry by samer791in Seattle

[–]numlok 29 points30 points ago

He was one of my best friends growing up.

He was an honestly brilliant, hilarious, creative, and caring man who was extremely active and involved with his family, and was an inspiration to me in many regards.

I am beyond shocked by the senselessness of all of this...

I'll likely be up there soon for services, but if there's anything any of you locals can do to assist his family, or help bring these senseless bastards to justice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

RIP J, I'm really going to miss you bro.

Fuck.

edit: Here is an updated article, with more background on my friend Justin, and details of what happened yesterday.
I am literally sickened by this, and although I know it won't do a damn thing to change what has happened, I really really really hope they find the stupid selfish asshole who took my friend away from me, took a husband away from his loving wife, and a father away from the two small children he was so amazing with.

edit2: A friend summed this up much better than I ever could:

An Open Letter to the Coward that Shot Justin Ferrari

As I delve through the online comments that politicize the events of May 24th, I can’t help but focus on the most basic of facts: you carelessly shot at people you were arguing with in an attempt to settle your differences, and in the process, cut short the life of an innocent man known as a model father, husband, colleague, and friend. Instead of owning up to this senseless act, you and your gang fled the scene, leaving his children to seek shelter in a nearby restaurant, and his father to cradle his head while he died.

You are a coward in every sense of the word.

You are not tough. You do not intimidate your community. You do not represent other people who look like you, and you do nothing more than evoke disdain and disgust for the so-called person you are.

You have encumbered his wife, children, and friends with an irrevocable loss, and changed our lives in ways that you cannot possibly comprehend. You have robbed us all from sharing common experiences we had a right to expect, and stripped us of a presence you could never even imagine emulating.

I have to wonder what was so important that you would even think to discharge a weapon in midday, at an active intersection, at anyone – much less with a disregard for the potential consequences of such foolishness. Your heedless choice leaves us in a state of grief and question.

I choose not to hunt you like the animal you act like. I choose not to hate you, because that does not bring Justin back or offer closure. However, I will not give a first thought towards offering you amnesty, or plead for your rehabilitation, as your life means nothing to me. When others call for your head, I will not speak up against that bloodlust. You owe society more than you could ever possibly repay it.

You should know about the person whose life you so casually extinguished. Justin was an individual of utmost integrity and energy. He appreciated the tiniest of graces, and did his best to see that his friends and family felt in kind. He was well spoken and intelligent, and he was an optimist for his future and those he cared for. He brought up his children to love the world, and free themselves of the burdens of fear and hate. The irony of a stray bullet ending his life is not lost on those who knew him best.

I ask myself how Justin would want us to respond to this tragic course, and all I can think is that he would expect us to carry on with a compassion and dignity that flies in the face of your irresponsible neglect. Even at the price of his own life, he would hope for the community to come together and find a way to end the very violence that represented his end.

Overcoming your cowardice may very well be the beginning of that notion.

Racked my first "Big" beer to secondary today. My SG reading worries me. Advice? by Sabra_Cadabrain Homebrewing

Just had to mention that I found this overly amusing, as I am in SF/CA, and am experiencing the exact opposite problem.
It's nearly "Summer", and I'm struggling to find a spot that stays consistently over 65°. :)
I share your "Big IPA" aspirations, so wish you the best of luck!

Awesome, congrats!
Did you happen to take advantage of the Groupon a while back?
If so, I did too, and am right behind you, waiting to bottle my first batch of the same beer.
I'd have been done last weekend, but I had a stuck fermentation for over a week (my guess is a quick temperature drop just after brew day), am just about to re-pitch yeast, add a bit more sugar, and also add some more aroma hops at the end (similar to what it sounds like you did).
Hopefully I'll be posting a photo similar to yours in a week or so!
Maybe we could do a bottle swap for comparison purposes... Could be interesting.
Cheers!

Trying to figure out if this network configuration is even possible. Any input is appreciated. [diagram inside] by numlokin techsupport

Ooof... This has turned into quite a pain, it's late, and I think I need to call it for the night.

As far as I can tell, I've got all the settings right, can log into the router from PC2, but cannot get through to the network or internet.

When I run "Diagnose and Repair", I get an error saying "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (primary DNS server) is not responding".

I've tried manual IP settings, automatic IP settings, restarts (computer, modem, and router), have put DNS settings used by the modem into both PC2 and router, and some other things I can't remember at the moment, but nothing seems to work. :(

I've reset it back to the working defaults again for now, and will see if I can try to figure it out again tomorrow night (after work).

Thanks for the assist though.

Thanks! I'll be giving this a shot right now.
If you don't hear back from me soon, it didn't work. ;)

Great question.
I originally had it set up this way, but it puts the router too far from the laptop to get a signal. I'm in an old lath and plaster house, which apparently kills WiFi signal, even "N" (I've had 3 separate routers over the years, and it's always been an issue0.
PC1 is in the living room (DVR/MediaPC), Laptop is on the other end of the house, with PC2 in between.
This seemed like a good solution in theory.

Pretty sure these were created in an iPad app called Poly.

Interesting... Not quite sure what the difference could have been.
Maybe because there were only 6 of us?
I imagine there are all kinds of Cal/OSHA regulations governing things like this.

Was your tour with CalTrans?
Ours was conducted by American Bridge/Fluor, who actually built the support structures, and are working up there.
We had an engineer/supervisor from that team leading us, so maybe that had something to do with the access?
Honestly though, when we got to the site, I wasn't expecting we'd be allowed to go up... So it was definitely a nice surprise.

Sorry... First (and probably last) time up there.

Well, if you were in SF around that time, you'd technically still be in the photo somewhere. ;)
Cheers!

It was taken at exactly 3:44PM yesterday.
Would be funny if you were one of the pixels in there.

I used Microsoft ICE, though I have heard good things about Hugin as well. Might have to give it a try!

I think it's just from Oakland to TI (which is a real shame).

Another interesting thing is that they have to change back to over/under at the tunnel.
Also, the bike path along the side looks like it's going to be a TON of fun to ride.

He got it through an auction at his kid's school.
I think the person offering the tour was involved with the project somehow.
Definitely not a regular thing.
I'm pretty sure I said "Yes!" before my buddy even finished asking if I wanted to join along. :)

No, I was just lucky to be invited to "tag along" with a friend who scored a tour.
It was pretty nuts up there... Don't think I could do that every day.

Here's a quick panorama from the same spot. I did take a ton of pictures, but am still sorting through them... I'll try and create a full album soon.

Thanks!
I'm not working up there, just happened to score a "tag-along" with a good friend who got an opportunity to tour the site.
I might have a couple shots looking East, but not many (and I'm unsure of the quality), as we were constrained to the Western side of the support structure.

You know, it may just have been a comment in that original thread that lead me to this video... I have a vague recollection, but can't be sure at the moment (the beer isn't helping, that's for sure).
