I'm confused here. Now not wanting to have sex with every girl you see automatically means that you're a sexless loser? Last time I checked assholes made fun of people who would stick their dick in anything that moved. I just want to stay current on what people use to ostracize anyone who disagrees with their opinions, I'm a little slow.

Gap teeth aren't an automatic disqualifier, she's just not particularly attractive (though by no means ugly), and she's got an awkward expression in that picture.

TIL Guillermo del Toro quit working on an adaptation of "The Wind in the Willows" for Disney after they asked him to "give Toad a skateboard and have him say 'radical dude' things". by ninjapocalypsein todayilearned

This is purely speculation, but I would say that those quotes were probably indicative of a long line of ridiculous studio notes. He wanted to make The Wind in the Willows, and Disney wanted him to make "Disney's The Wind in the Willows". That was just emblematic of the philosophical and artistic differences between him and the studio that would never be resolved, and he knew he wouldn't be allowed to make the movie he wanted to make, so knowing that this was the case, he chose to leave, rather than recontextualize something that didn't need to be recontextualized. Again, purely speculation, but judging from what I've heard about Disney, you don't argue with the mouse. Studio heads at Disney have an enormous amount of creative control over their movies, even with bigger-name talent.

I absolutely understand what you're saying though, and I don't think most people would've considered that. I think if Disney would have been willing to concede to his beliefs about the way the movie would've been made, there would've been no reason to leave the movie, even though a lot of people here would still think he should've left just because they suggested it. There's no reason he can't be pragmatic, but again, from what I understand about Disney, they probably would've demanded he make the changes. And in any case, it looks like they're trying again anyway.

This man is correct. Mountain of Madness is a Simpsons episode from Season 8, named after At the Mountains of Madness.

This thread is making me look like a huge goddamn Simpsons nerd. Fortunately, I am, so it's okay.

I thought as much.

That seems pretty fantastic. That's exactly how these people talk. It's especially ridiculous because these people are aviators by trade and know nothing about business OR the internet, so they literally have no idea what they're talking about, even less so than usual. They're just stringing together syllables that sound reasonably hip.

Coincidentally, for the last few days I've been watching season 8 of the Simpsons, and The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show came up as the first episode I had to watch today, after this discussion. In fact, I don't think I'm even willing to call it a coincidence. That's fate.

[–]ninjapocalypse[S] 7 points8 points ago

Oh, yeah, I know how that is. I do SEO work for a small online business and have to contact a bunch of aviation companies, and nearly all of them are like that. I've learned to take the approach of just telling them I'm making a business arrangement with them and pretending there's no marketing involved with it, which makes them think it's a 1995-style straight link exchange. Fortunately, because aviation websites seem to generally be stuck in about 1995, this works, so I don't have to entertain statements about how their company is on the SEO HTMLMNOP cutting edge of Tripod sites on the Altavista.

And I had always hoped it would be. My dream was always to get fired from a job by saying "excuse me, but 'proactive' and 'paradigm'... aren't these just buzzwords that stupid people use to sound important? Not... that I'm accusing you of that. I'm fired, aren't I?" in a business meeting filled with idiot jargon.

Well you obviously thought something was notable about it since you used TIL as a soapbox for a political announcement instead of acting like a goddamn grownup and using the subreddit for what it's actually supposed to be used for.

Is anyone else's iPhone 4 starting to really seem bogged down and slow? by Kevinfloin iphone

[–]ninjapocalypse 0 points1 point ago

But is the lifetime really that short? The oldest devices (I'm referring to the iPhone 4 specifically, because that's what the OP is referring to) are a little less than 2 years old, and some of them aren't even that old, because not everyone bought theirs on launch day (Verizon still sells the iPhone 4 to this day). Surely the quality of the hardware isn't so poor that it degrades in that short of an amount of time even if it is being used frequently.

[–]ninjapocalypse 0 points1 point ago

I'm not having this problem, but then, I declined the 5.1 update. This is primarily because I don't want the goddammed camera button on my lock screen, but my friends with the iPhone 4 have complained of the same problems with stability and slowdown after updating to 5.1, so maybe it is related?

That's beautiful.

Incidentally I should note that I was half asleep and browsing earlier this morning and thought it said it was in Ghidoragafuchi, and as a result spent half the day today thinking there was a beautiful park dedicated to the three-headed monster from Godzilla movies. Thank you for that.

I've probably missed the chance to get a reply from you, but I just wanted to say that I've actually followed your career since waaaaaay back a long time ago in the Pointless Audio days. I remember seeing you on Arena for the first time and saying "holy shit that's Captain Immy!" I can't believe I'm the only person to have mentioned it on here. My friend and I still quote your Cletus and Jimmy video to this day, as well as your hysterically funny Wolfenstein 3D prank call ("COCK AND BALLS!")

Most people know you from your G4 work and that's perfectly understandable because you've accomplished a whole hell of a lot. This is where my question lies: how does it feel essentially being one of the first podcasters (even though this was before that dumbass term was coined) to have reached mainstream success, and do you feel that it's easier to become transition from online media (such as blogs or podcasts) to mainstream media now that it's more prominent, or has the market become more saturated and therefore harder to break out in? I have a comedy website ((www.catchynamenews.com), for posterity, not blogspam) that I've been using for my comedy output for a while off and on, and haven't really been trying to gain any kind of attention with, but I have found I've been getting a bit of attention here and there, mostly from the gaming community. It essentially seems like the attention is easier to get than before, but like the span is much shorter.

In any case, I just wanted to let you know I have been a fan of yours for going on two decades now. And if you have a copy of that Cletus and Jimmy video just sitting around somewhere, that would be fucking awesome to see again. Just sayin'.

[TOMT]What's this <song>? by JesusFartedTooin tipofmytongue

[–]ninjapocalypse 0 points1 point ago

Can you think of any other contexts in which you've heard it, or anywhere else to hear it? I tried to listen to the video but I can barely hear the music because of all the Starcraft bullshit going on on top of it. The melody sounds familiar but I can't quite place it... I almost want to say it sounds like something from a later Street Fighter game but I'm not sure.

Have you tried reaching out to the person who made the video and asking them? In a lot of cases people are willing to answer quick questions like that.

This man is correct. I believe the specific effect (with the police) was used in an episode of the Simpsons, but it's a reference to this type of joke from Benny Hill.

Yeah, mainstream fame and radio play isn't really a good way to gauge popularity anymore. A lot of people think that just because a band isn't on the same level of visibility as, say, Lady Gaga, or just because performers/groups like that have a wider audience, that they're not popular, but that's just not true anymore. Mainstream pop acts appeal to more kinds of audiences (adults, teens, kids, etc), but just because indie bands are primarily popular with people in their 20s who don't listen to the radio doesn't mean they aren't still building an enormous listener base. The closest thing to an "underground" music scene there is is stuff that's only distributed online; any band popular enough to be signed to even a fairly small national indie label is probably going to have at least several thousand listeners, if not more.

BERKS! by plantlifein AdviceAnimals

[–]ninjapocalypse 0 points1 point ago

I've never seen them mentioned on Reddit (I usually try desperately to avoid any discussion of music on here) but I've heard them twice in a coffee shop I go to, once in a pizza place/bar, and have had them suggested by several friends, so like with most indie bands, they're not as unpopular as you think. None of this changes the original problem that I have with the "HEY I RECOGNIZE THAT YOU'RE MAKING A REFERENCE TO SOMETHING AND WANT TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED FOR IT" mentality.
