TROPHY CASE

Enjoy the teaser video for the 2013 Middle TN Anime Convention by dorenein nashville

[–]nekoniku 0 points1 point ago

I'm an anime fan since the mid '90s and really enjoy conventions. This video perfectly illustrates the poor job MTAC continues to do in promoting themselves. Nowhere in the video or on the accompanying YouTube site do they mention the convention's dates, location, website link, or anything remotely helpful to someone who'd like to attend.

By going to http://www.mtac.net/, I learned that I missed the convention in March because I saw no promotional info about it. It's just really disappointing; I'd love to go to a good local convention but MTAC is promoted so poorly, from my point of view it may as well not exist.

Worried about getting MCITP certification and fretting about which cert to try for. I want to get out of help desk and move into system administration. by nekonikuin sysadmin

That's good to hear, thanks.

I had a weird realization this afternoon -- that my home network has 13 devices of various kinds connected to it, including a little headless Linux box I used for VPN when I travel.

In my local job market, companies expect you to be able to do the job they're advertising on day one when you start. This usually means they're running ads for people who have hands-on experience with Microsoft servers in decent-sized data centers --or, they usually add, MS certification of some kind.

No matter how I write my resume, I can't patch over the fact that I don't have the kind of experience they seek. I'm confident I can learn those skills but I don't have them yet. My hope is that certification will allow me to get a foot in the door at some of these employers and gain that experience.

My "career" until just a few years ago mostly consisted of doing break/fix and desktop support for small companies under the title IT Director*, with a bit of dabbling in more interesting stuff as I could get away with it. I'm now painfully aware that I have never managed my career well and that's what I'm trying to fix.

Fortunately, my current job isn't in a call center and I do deal with customers in person, but there isn't any path upwards at present because of all the upheaval in IT personnel above me.

* In a company with fewer than 50 employees, "IT Director" really just means you're The Computer Guy, nothing more. Title inflation in small outfits can be kind of ridiculous.

My thinking was that I wanted to get the word "enterprise" in my creds, to be taken more seriously when applying for the jobs I see listed that I find interesting. Although, since MCSA only requires three tests, I'm probably going to do that first and see how the job hunt shakes out then. Thanks.

Certifications are brain-dumps and HR screeners.

I know for sure they're an easy filter for HR to use. That's why I'm trying to play this certification game.

Your best bet is to talk to your existing network & system admin types at the place you work to see if they can mentor you.

Unfortunately, mainly because of a lot of chaos and management turnover where I work, that's not possible, which is one reason I'm setting up my strategy for getting my next job and making it not a help desk position. I really don't want to take another job resetting passwords and replacing toner cartridges unless I absolutely have to.

This past week Microsoft ditched the MCITP certifications and overhauled the system. You should look into the changes.

Thanks for the heads-up on that. My plan now is to go for the MCSA/Server first, to legitimately have a server-based MCITP, then pursue the additional enterprise piece as enhancement. Thanks again.

You're actually not far off, in a way. The Catbird Seat practices a variant of a new style of cooking called molecular gastronomy, where you try to make one food look or taste like something completely different than it usually would.

Is $80 for these Polk Audio Monitor30's a deal? by 0195311in audio

[–]nekoniku 2 points3 points ago

I have a pair of Monitor30s and a pair of Monitor40s also. They are great for what they cost new and I enjoy listening to them tremendously.

For serious listening, I do turn to my Fried E-series towers but they are at a completely different price point than the bookshelf Polks OP is considering.

Question about VBR audio files by talzerin audiophile

[–]nekoniku 0 points1 point ago

I noticed the problem on my iPod Mini that I use in the car. When I did some research online, I found that it was a known problem Apple either could not or would not fix, so I re-encoded problem albums to CBR.

Bear in mind, this was around the time Sony was injecting rootkits into their CDs so I was avoiding dropping commercial CDs into my PC's CD drive. Windows rootkits can't infect my Linux box.

I have a 5th-gen iPod Nano but haven't tested it with VBR, so I can't speak to that point.

Question about VBR audio files by talzerin audiophile

[–]nekoniku 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure you're going to be able to tell a difference between AAC 256 and your VBR files. However, I've found that iPods often choke and stutter on VBR MP3s that were not encoded by iTunes. I encode with LAME on Linux, and my iPods hate LAME's VBR MP3 files.

If you only encoded with iTunes and you've never encountered playback problems, I think I would not bother to get the "official" versions of those songs.

Looking for a new large HD mp3 player other than a Ipod Classic, any good alternatives? by diablo_manin gadgets

[–]nekoniku 0 points1 point ago

Seriously, WTF happened? There used to be some competition.

I think iOS and Android are killing the MP3 player market, except for very small, cheap units. This article makes some interesting points about how iPod sales have been in decline for a while -- and Apple doesn't seem concerned.
