North Korea is suffering a prolonged and widespread drought, state media says, raising fears it will worsen already dire food shortages by nahdenin worldnews

[–]nahden[S] 0 points1 point ago

A change to a more democratic or open regime in North Korea would probably lead to a large influx of North Koreans into China, which is something China doesn't want. At the same time, China is pretty happy with having a stable economic relationship with South Korea and Japan, something that which would be severely threatened if NK started doing anything crazy. So, from that PoV, China certainly wants the status quo.

2, 5 and 6 are true for all languages, but a lot of of new stuff has been made translatable lately so I can only assume they'll add that as well in the future.

As for 4, yeah, the admins stated that those strings shouldn't be translated literally, that one should come up with something funny. Yet, there's still a number of translations where people just use a literal translation of the source.

The Death Of Yugoslavia (~6 hours, BBC) by kitsunein Documentaries

[–]nahden 0 points1 point ago

For one, it completely ignores chronology and sets up an almost alternative timeline wherein the focus is on things that happened after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. It makes it seem like foreign support for certain countries (i.e. Slovenia, Croatia, and after the dissolution had already happened - and in an effort to protect them from the ensuing war) was somehow the thing that triggered the dissolution itself, which is nuts.

The entire goal is to present the dissolution as an event executed by outside forces (which is again, unrealistic since 99% of both Slovenes and Croats voted for independence), and it shows Milošević as a protector of Yugoslavia by quote mining and ignoring much of what he's done.

Another thing is, it presents the rising nationalism in Croatia as something that initiated the dissolution, but it ignores the 2 or 3 years prior to that in which Serb nationalism spawned in Kosovo as well as in other republics where Serbs lived. In reality, the radical nationalism in Croatia started only after the occupation of Croatian territory.

The tremors were felt even here in Zagreb.

"In Athens, the homeless are on the streets in growing numbers, soup kitchens feed twice as many people as a year ago, and the poor are diving into garbage bins in search of scrap they can sell. Greece is close to breaking point as it struggles with austerity targets set by creditors" by trot-trotin worldnews

That's a myth. The original story said that Greece has more Porsche Cayennes than people who make 50k a year. The story's been refuted countless times, and Porsche's official data says that there were only 1500 Porsche Cayennes sold in 9 years in all of Greece. For comparison's sake, there's 311 thousand people who make more than 50k a year in Greece.

It was a figure that made a spokesman at Porsche laugh. Lukas Kunze says the story is "ridiculous". In total, they had only sold around 1,500 Porsche Cayennes in Greece since the launch of the luxury car nine years ago.

I lost a very dear friend in Metkovic to a plane crash today. I am hoping someone could assist me. by taboo_in croatia

There's been an update to one of the articles, apparently it was the older male piloting the plane and not the girl, at least according to the pilot's brother who claims to have arrived at the scene first.

May 14 - New translations live, new language deployed: Basque! by kemitchein i18n

[–]nahden 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure if this is directly related to this translation deployment or perhaps some other code changes in the last 24h hours, but the strings below the submission, where it says submitted <time> ago by <author> now show up in its original English form instead of the translations. This is true for at least a couple of language settings that I've tried.

So, for example, in German it now says
