I have a literal STACK (like 40+) of these brackets sitting around. If any redditor wants one, just cover shipping (like $3) and it's yours.

Noobie question: So uh.. SSDs? by Jeff_Drakein buildapc

[–]mythlogic 1 point2 points ago

Win7 gets along with SSDs quite nicely, since it is the first Windows OS to support TRIM. No special steps, SSDs plug into SATA cables the same as normal HDDs, and they'll show up in the BIOS and Windows Setup like normal.

Not often do I get a PC with this level of Fail by mythlogicin geek

This person is correct. OP image is actually upside down, I was too lazy to flip it. The cable along the bottom was not the source of the combustion, though the fire did melt/burn through the insulation.

The likely source, as mentioned by my budde on Facebook, is the thing that looks like a power inverter to the right (left on the correctly oriented pic). Which is burned pretty thoroughly.

Quite literally. The customer in question said it filled their entire storefront with smoke.

lol, fortunately the guy who brought it in knew it was DOA. I've had the good fortune of not having anyone try to pull stupid shit like that (so far).

How do I clean the inside of my computer? by TroublesomeTunain buildapc

[–]mythlogic 0 points1 point ago

Love this thing. Got one for the shop and it's amazing. Easily paid for itself in a month by not having to buy 5 cans of air. It's basically a vacuum cleaner motor with a handle attached. It's really loud, but it will move some goddamn air. And the best part, it never loses pressure no matter how long you go, unlike with canned air which has to boil off more gas after a minute or so.

Need help building absolute best PC possible with an unlimited amount of money. by luckybuilderin buildapc

As mentioned elsewhere, ditch the desktop board and get a server one that can handle some Xeons, that'll give you a really nice boost.

Where you planning on RAID'ing those SSDs? Intel SSDs would work better if you do. And you might as well throw in a 3rd GPU into SLI for the 3rd monitor, because, well, why the hell not?!

I'm amazed it didn't shut down sooner. I believe all modern BIOS' come with an automatic temperature shutoff, which you can adjust downward if you want, but it's generally around 100C I think. I usually set builds to shutdown at 85C, which no desktop should get above 80C or so unless you overclock them or have bad airflow.

The laptops we build regularly get to 95C under stress tests, especially the GPU.

That's the crazy part, they where all organized into bundles and zip tied away from major components.

It was a Antec TruePower 80Plus 750w PSU. I've no idea why it didn't immediately shut itself off, didn't have time to investigate what the connector shorted out too, but it's possible there was enough resistance in the circuit for the PSU not to trip a fuse.

[Build Help](sort of) My motherboard on my laptop is fried and I need a new one, is there any good sources for buying laptop motherboards? by QinGu9221in buildapc

[–]mythlogic 6 points7 points ago

If you where to bring this in to me for repair, I'd tell you to get a new one, because the cost of labor is going to exceed the value of the laptop. It takes around 2hrs or more to disassemble and reassemble the average laptop. The 1557 is pretty average in this regard. Some of the slim-form laptops are a huge pain in the ass.

That said, if you do it yourself you can probably get another year or two out of the system before something else fails. So if it does what you need it to do, you can invest ~$200 into fixing it, instead of getting a new one.

Ebay has the MB for around $170
Sadly my favorite parts site does not have it

Sorry about the bit of marketing, we really like our logo. :) In the future I'll leave it out and put a disclaimer in the comments, like so :

Note : This is a build I'm doing at the custom-build desktop/laptop company I work at in Ann Arbor.

First one of these cases that we've had ordered, I had to show it off. I'll add some more pics later with components in them.

That'd be us :)

We supplied Ops with some better hardware to help them keep going awhile back. We also maintain their hardware/software to help keep them going. LoL is a constant pain in my ass, always updating.
