TROPHY CASE

Just bought this guy. Bought him cheap because the lady said he was dying. Need help. by Attila_the_Hun_44in Bonsai

junipers need to have their roots dry out a bit for health. I don't think the moisture "tray" is a good thing for this species. Give it some sun and keep it from drying out totally.

I used to work there years ago when I lived in the area. I don't recall the special being duplicated. Call ahead. I'd hate to excite you over an outdated special. But it was a HUGE draw. Man I used to hate slanging' shells.

Was throwing this sargentii in the trash when its life was saved by a bored friend. We ended up spending a bunch of wire and time on this 'meh' juni. It will require thinning but it was getting late! by myopinionstinksin Bonsai

you're seeing that in the second picture? Like I said, it definitely needs to be thinned out but hopefully when all is said and done, there won't be branches visible inside the canopy at all!

I'd say cut it completely off. It's too big to use in your final design. I would understand if you are keeping it until later on when new branches grow. If this guy stays healthy through summer, saw that piece off in late fall/winter.

This is my first tree, does anyone have advice? by hfitzgeraldin Bonsai

[–]myopinionstinks 1 point2 points ago

Let it grow. Not too much you can do with it right now. Why are there large rocks in that pot?

Why didn't this post include a picture of the tree? These posts need pictures.

did you see any upward growing branches? We spent so much wire to bend these things into place and avoid straight up or straight down. the third picture shows it best i think how much we moved the branches. I'm going to attempt to make this a very tight canopy of foliage with only traces of pad seperation. like this kinda. Thanks for the input.

So can I pick up KI from the store so I can do science?

i'm going to jin the entirety of the trunk section in front as it is no longer supporting any foliage. I hope that will turn this into a more attractive piece of material.

bueno. I assume this is a deciduous tree. Why keep that overly thick horizontal branch? You won't be able to use that in your final design. I'd saw it off now.

Most of the people I have learned from have told me that super thrive is snake oil. They will not submit their product to any testing and for god's sake look at the packaging. For that reason alone I can't use it.

I like where you're headed. I prefer the image of the photoshopped version much more so than the original. That branch is begging to go. though a bit bunched up, the branches you've selected show a good general understanding of shohin theory with a first, second, back branch and then an apex. Please do not be in a hurry to get this into a bonsai pot. Tuthfully, it'll take another 10 years to thicken up enough to be convincing (imo and it stinks) but I did the same thing when I first started the habit.

Keep it alive now. Move on to another trainer (think big) and keep this thing happy. What kind of after care have you decided on after researching this particular species? I see other trees in the background... share?

I was talking to a buddy last night about our learning curve. What we have both learned from our mentors is that we should be working on trees to learn techniques and accept that they may die bc it will take just as long if not longer to learn proper horticultural care for these potted up plants. The doing keeps us entertained, the dying keeps us striving for education. Someone who has more experience will be able to get a tree into workable condition before a novice can.

I read somewhere it'd take up to 3 years to harden off. The reward is worth the wait, imo.
