What is one statement that you stand by but might get unpleasant reaction from others? by no_front_teethin AskReddit

[–]mylegalthrowaway 1 point2 points ago

I'm not positive about this, but I think the reason it is illegal is so that companies like insurance companies (or your work) can deny benefits to your beneficiaries because of "illegal" activity.

I remember hearing something like this, but I don't have a source off the top of my head.

Going to Germany in about 2 weeks--what do I need to take with me? by featherrocketshipin travel

[–]mylegalthrowaway 1 point2 points ago

Seven days in Heidelberg will probably be quite a lot, unless you have specific reasons for staying there for a week. I would consider switching up the days in Berlin versus Heidelberg, or even checking out some nearby cities between the two.

As far as what you need - it's always nice to have a dictionary so you can read signs. I always try to learn a few key phrases that I can say (or recognize) to locals. These are things like 'thank you,' 'excuse me,' 'please,' etc. If you have a smart phone, there are apps you can download that have offline dictionaries/translators so you don't have to carry around and flip through a book.

I can't remember exactly what mine is called, but you can do a search for "offline german-english translator." Along those lines, you can also download offline metro maps and city maps for your phone.

Along the same lines, you can get a sim card for your phone that works only in Germany, and not worry about an international roaming plan through your U.S. carrier. You may also be able to contact your carrier about giving you a certain number of international text messages for a set fee. That way you can text your travel partner if you get separated.

You will need an adapter if you are going to use any of your electronics. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/International-Travel-Grounded-Adapter-Plug/dp/B001ISR9B6 (although I'm skeptical as to why this one is only $3....)

Yesterday, I scolded a stranger in a Subway. Have you ever had to publicly scold someone you didn't know? by grummlindsin AskReddit

I told him this, and my mom says he's blushing, and asking what is this place that I'm telling stories about him :)

I think that's (at least partially) why he said he'd punch the father, since it was really the father's fault the kid was acting like a brat.

My dad says he sort of jumped up and acted like he had no idea that his son was being a brat. That overacted "oh! what?! Is something happening??" type of reaction.

He'd probably be so embarrassed I'm sharing these stories, but wouldn't mind :)

Yeah, this was back in the 80s. Life was different then.

I think he would have kept kicking, except for his father finally "noticed" something was up, started paying attention, and made the kid stop. In fairness, this was in the 80s. I'm sure the result today would be a lot different.

haha, definitely not that definition. Deadheading is when an airline employee takes a flight to the place where they are going to start their working flight, but without having to buy a ticket (on the airline employer's dime, essentially).

My dad telling the stories is MUCH better than me typing them out, too. He acts out the expressions and reactions of all the people. I've spent so much time laughing about his experiences.

There is another story similar to that. Once while he was in the cockpit, they were waiting for everyone to board, and a man wearing a hat was fiddling with something in the overhead bin, completely disregarding the fact they were trying to taxi and stay on schedule.

After a number of announcements politely requesting everyone sit down so they could start taxing, including requests by the flight attendants asking him to sit down, the man was still standing up doing something in his suitcase. Finally, my dad gets on the intercom and says, "Hey! You in the hat! SIT DOWN!"

I wish I could get my dad on here to tell all of the stories he has from flying. He has called out so many people that were acting like assholes on the flight.

My dad, who was a pilot, was deadheading to work one day when something similar happened. A child behind him was continuously kicking his seat despite numerous attempts from my dad to get him to stop.

The child's father was completely ignoring the situation. After about five minutes of this, my dad turned around and beckoned the child forward and said, "If you kick my seat one more time, I'm going to stand up and punch your father in the face."

There was no more seat kicking.

No one was murdered in El Salvador on Saturday, in what was the first homicide-free day in nearly three years. by geekchicin worldnews

I was there back in 2005, and I don't think it was nearly as bad then as now. Luckily I look I could be Venezulean, so as long as I didn't speak, it wasn't as dangerous.

It is incredible to see the wealth differences in the city though; you could draw a chalk line between incredibly wealthy housing and incredibly poor housing right down the middle of the street.

Thanks! I have lived in Venezuela before, and the rules were pretty similar. If you didn't act stupidly, you were okay, and it was a wonderful place to be.

I'll do some more research and maybe see you there!

I just started doing research on it as a possibility, so I'm open to any place.

As weird coincidence/aside, I was just about to make a post asking about whether or not I should visit Honduras next month. What do you think?

Here's a few quick thoughts off the top of my head:

Walking down Hauptstrasse is a nice little walk with fun shops and some good bakeries/cafes/restaurants.

Check out the Old Bridge and the Brass Monkey.

Walk up to the Castle and around the garden areas that overlook the river.

No problem! I definitely don't want you to stress too much over bar studying, but it's nice not to have to think about anything else if you don't have to! Good luck with the rest of law school, the exam, and the baby :)

I'm sure you definitely know this, but studying for the bar is absolutely exhausting. I have taken it in three different states and honestly feel like those time periods are black holes in my life that I can't remember at all because of how worn out I was.

I am not pregnant, but I imagine that throwing in anything else you'd have to do (like doctor's appointments, feeling sick, etc.) are going to make studying for the bar that much more stressful and exhausting.

You may want to wait until after!

What is a reasonable offer price for new development? by mylegalthrowawayin RealEstate

I have come up with a bunch of comparables (through Zillow, also through appraisal and assessment data), but those are all older homes and this is a new development. Does that matter at all?
